Wow this project is amazing. However, building all the way to where the farlands used to be is pretty much impossible. The file will become so large that your computer will quite simply run out if memory before you get there, if you do it legitimately, which you say you plan to.

I am not trying to rain on your parade, but I think you really need a reality check. According to the wiki (need verification) minecraft's "infinite map" is really only useable within 32 MILLION blocks of the spawn. That means the world is 2.8 QUADRILLION (2,800,000,000,000,000) blocks or 28 TRILLION kilometers squared. Now the EARTH'S surface area is only 510 MILLION kilometers squared, so the minecraft world is 5 MILLION times bigger than earth!!!!! Putting that into chunks it is 11 TRILLION chunks. So if you only spent one second working on each chunk it would still take 180 BILLION hours to cover the whole world. And now if you had a 4 million people playing minecraft working on it, each person would have to spend 45000 hours, or 5 YEARS working in it non stop.

So moral of the story is, give yourself a reachable goal. Find a seed with a good big island and colonize that. You could still even try to do the whole map if you really want to, you just won't be able to do it, period.

I said it once, I'll say it again:
    I. DON'T. CARE.
I am determined to get this done. Very. It may take years, but it will be completed. THIS I SWEAR!!

I'd love to be a lore writer, I think I could do it

    Quote from C 2

I might be able to help there (I'm a mod on a creative writing website if it helps my credibility at all).

Why not give us some of the backstory that you already have? What are the cities like? Where are they and why are they there?

I'll need a sample of both your writing to see which one of you is better. Good luck!

EDIT: Wooooaaahh...what the hell happened to the quote boxes??!! Why are they green!?

If most of stormhaven was underground, then maybe it would be cool to be the mining capital of the world until the "accident" and its ran over by zombies and other things (it would be awesome for a storyline)

Hrmm....no. I've decided Gasglow is going to be my mining capital.

I'll give it a try!Hey....this post magically got moved to discussion..

Maybe you could make an underground city like in the Movie: City of Ember

Meh.....no. I was planning to have most of Stormhaven buried underground but then I took an arrow to the knee so another underground city just wouldn't fit.Looking for a lore writer...anyone interested?

I love this idea, and I wish you all the best luck. I'm going to bookmark this, and will probably give you ideas from time to time.

I will say this though, Take it one step at a time. Make an incredibly well detailed part, and then move onto the next. A beautiful but small world will be better than a huge but ugly one.

    Thanks!
Thats what I was planning to do.

Mechanicsburg is a town from the steampunk/gaslamp-fantasy webcomic "Girl Genius". It's the first thing that shows up when you google "mechanicsburg steampunk", just so you know.

Filling up an entire minecraft map from top to bottom (and to nether) with cityscape is no small undertaking. You seem really confident about it, but I'm not sure how you're going to do this solo, and with only limited computer usage. It's taken me months to get even a fraction of my adventure map done. I'm not sure how this can be done in any reasonable time frame, not to mention you'll probably get bored with it after a while. Also, how do you define which city is which? It sounds like you want to cover everything, so I guess you'd need walls or borders or something?

I think you should take a step back and think about what you *really* want to do. A single city; definitely feasible! Several cities; time consuming, but still do-able with enough patience, and outside help is always great. The likes of Trantor or Coruscant or any concept of world-city... yeah.

You should also be posting pictures- this *is* a screenshots thread, after all. Fanfare and building up hype is always fun, but it's hard to keep interested when this is all idea and no substance. How about you show us some pictures of Gasglow, which is apparently in development right now?

I saw Girl Genius when I was looking around the library...I thought it was a girl comic :huh.gif: I'll try getting it out next time I see it...
Anyways, I feel really confident about this. Never underestimate a stubborn Cantabrian :laugh.gif: (Cantabrians are people who live in Canterbury, New Zealand). As said before, I have a gut feeling I can do this.
Also, all the screenshots I have so far are sitting on the laptop, which is currently having disagreements with the charger. So I will get them up once they are finished.

Yeah, this project seems like a lot of work (MAJOR understatement), esp. if your doing all by yourself. I suppose you could have people post their creations with a download link on here and you could MCedit it into the world. That would probably be your best option.

By the way, how 'bout naming one of your cities Stormhaven? I played this game a while ago and it came to mind because it was pretty much steampunk tower defense. And the city could be shaped like a large cone, with different levels, like Minas Tirith from lord of the ring. Maybe it could be a major mining city, with mine shafts down into the Earth.

PS. My friend and I have a server. Am I missing out on the flying squids? haha

    I know, right?
Stormhaven sounds cool..I could make it a secret, forgotten sister city of Windhaven that has been befallen be a terrible advent...or..something.. :dry.gif:
And the flying squid thing was a joke :iapprove: .

I have a suggestion, make an airship airport and hangar.

Already in progress. Gasglow currently has an airship port, with Metroblimp's, which are my steampunk version of buses.

Are you going to get help on this, or will it be a solo project? It would be cool if you got a huge server and everyone just kept expanding towards the edge

    Four problems with that:
    1. I don't know how to start a server.
    2. The laptop that I use is currently craped itself having issues with the charger, so I can't use it. Even if I could, it says "U mad bro?" says several files don't exist every single bloody time I download ANYTHING.
    3. In my house I have limited time on the laptop and am not allowed to go on any servers.
    4. Theres the constant danger of greifing, getting shut down, glitches, infection, flying squids, ect..

What are your plans for ocean biomes? Are you going to make man-made islands, make floating cities above the seas, or just leave them be?

    Just curious...

Hrm...I dunno. I guess floating cities would be the logical option.

    .....or....

    Did somebody say...
    RAPTURE!!??
....no? No-one said it? Alright, I'll say it..

I'm in full support of this, but like Nigalbunny said, the minecraft world is huge. Here is a quote from the wiki:

    That includes 1.8 too

Good luck filling up 460,800,000,000,000,000 blocks :smile.gif: (60 million length x 60 million width x 128 block height

If I were you, I would set a goal and keep expanding. Simple as that. In theory over the years you could do it.

    *sticks fingers in ears* LALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALA----

Sorry, but I'm filling up all the spaces, and thats that.
    Quote from onxyia

wait wait wait.... so basically this world is going to be steampunk. the whoooollllleee world that means until the "edge" that was added in 1.8. you will get ideas from others and no matter how long this takes, you will take on the challenge. this is probably the BIGGEST project in the history of this game. all i have to say is you are amazing and good luck.

    Thanks!

    ideas:
a huge capital city called windhaven or cloudhaven or something.
    (just incase you forgot) AIRSHIPS
some kind of battleground between 2 cities or in one city (kind of like a siege?)
    a ruins of a city

I will try to fit in all of that. And I love the idea of Windhaven as a capital. I was going to put a massive library somewhere...and I think Windhaven would be the perfect place.

    o and one last thing:
    steampunk= mechanics and flying and stuff= airships= wool and wood= flammable :biggrin.gif:

Does that mean you plan to grief?

No steampunk-themed map should be without its own version of the town of Mechanicsburg!

Seriously though, this is highly ambitious. Even importing schematics, it'll take ages to fill. You're better off working within a large defined region, like islands (not literally, I mean the town sprawls) of 500x500 blocks. Otherwise, you should look into adapting an already existing mod that generates villages or cities (I've seen at least one) to your own purposes.

Hrm...can't find mechanicsburg on the googles....
And as for you recommendations...*sticks fingers in ears* LALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALA----
But seriously. I really think I can do this.

No. The world is not actually infinite. It's SEEMINGLY infinite.

If this were back in 1.7.3, yeah, it'd be infinite. (Sorta) You see, you'd eventually reach The Far Lands back then, and while those do in theory carry on forever, you have SO much lag, and the game mechanics are SO weakened, the boarder of The Far Lands could essentially be considered the boarder of The World.

NOW, since 1.8 when the terrain generation code got overhauled, The Far Lands were removed. Turning your world into a flat mass that's quite a few times larger then the surface of The Earth, but not infinite. (I don't remember exactly how large each world is, though)

But it will indeed come to an abrupt stop right where The Far Lands would normally have started according to the Minecraft Wiki, and beyond it is nothing but the frightening black oblivion we've come to call The Void.

So while it'd take a MONSTER stack of patients, what this person plans to do could in fact be done...He'd probably go down in Minecraft fame as the first person to build something across EVERY single acre of land from edge to edge without the use of mods, hacks, or third parties. In fact, just about anyone who does that would, because seriously, the size of a Minecraft map is MUCH larger then the surface of The Earth.

I've been playing this game a long time, pal, I'm a master at it. So at the risk of sounding like a troll (Which I'm not, I'm simply stating facts here) Come at me, bro! :iapprove: / :tongue.gif:

Thanks for defending me...even though that was a bit unnecessary..
And I quite like the idea of going down in minecraft fame :iapprove:
