Some of these pictures are misleading. I was to understand that a sapling would not grow if there was a torch next to it. This is true, isn't it?

Ive cut down and replaced my tree farm several times, and each sapling had 2 torches on either side of them, now if the torches weren't at ground level and closer then 2 blocks, then you might have a problem

Just to get rid of any doubts people might have:

Trees grow on any dirt/grass, as long as it has enough light(otherwise the saplings pop out of the ground)

Animals need light + grass to spawn, until the grass made it this far, no animals spawned down there

And no animals spawn outside of the gated area

posted a message on I have a problem with my double doors...
I really hate visible wires, so I always need to make these things hidden:

    The wiring is essentially this:

The only difference is since its below the "ground level" of the doors, I needed to use an extra redstone torch for each door to transmit the signal up, there is no way to get the signal to a door with redstone alone, without being at the same level as the ground, or on top of the ground, which would mean unless you can hide the wiring in the walls(obviously not possible in a setup like this), the wiring will be visible without using torches to carry the signal up.

Also note that the redstone simulator doesn't behave like MC does ingame, hence why some doors are still closed in the blueprint

...Are those underground trees? What the heck?

Your avatar looks like it would be asking that question.

I lol'd at that after going back and looking at his avatar.

And yeah, trees will grow on dirt as long as there is enough light(which is why I have torches around the trunks), the saplings wont stay planted if there isnt enough light.

dirt without direct sunlight will no grow.
IE, if glass is blocking light, grass won't grow.

There are pictures just above you of someone underground without any sunlight growing grass.

    Ninja'd, but this ^
It took me several hours to even get grass down there, because I used a path 1 tile wide, grass, however, seems to spread faster if there is more dirt around to spread to, in that underground tree farm, once it hit the actual open area, it really started to fill the area up

it will not start for me, the jar is just opened by WinRar.

Problem: You set the default association of your JARs to WinRAR (probably because you wanted to retexture something and opened minecraft.jar). This is sloppy and not recommended, as JARs are made to be executed, with opening of secondary priority.

Solution: If you have Java installed (and I expect you do, if you play Minecraft), right clicking and selecting "Open With > Java" should work under Win XP/Vista/7.

If this doesn't work, type Win+R to open the run dialog, type "cmd" at the prompt, then type "cd C:\path\to\folder", giving the folder which contains the MCRedstoneSim.jar file. Then type "java -jar MCRedstoneSim.jar" and it should run. Obviously this is complicated and difficult, and you should try to reassociate JARs to Java, but the exact method to do this depends on your OS.

[ninja'd] Atomizer's method is a version of the second given method, and may be simpler in the long run. I had not had any plans of making an executable launcher, as Java is more cross-platform (I'd have to make a version for every OS, including those I don't own). I'll bet some solution is available on the web for something like that, though. I'll see what I can do, but 2.0 takes priority for now.

Ah, good point, I hadn't thought about that, because then youd need to make a dmg, exe and linux binary, complicating things further.
I also did not think about setting java as the default application, by default winrar assigns itself to be able to open jar files, and java doesnt as far as I know(could be wrong, but I had winrar before I installed java)

It'd be great but if he makes it possible piracy will become trivially easy.

You still need to log in to even get to the main menu, so having support for LAN wouldn't really affect its ability to be pirated

That is a problem I hope will be sorted out by having an executable release at some point, in the meantime, create a .bat file in the same directory in notepad with the following:

    java -jar MCRedstoneSim.jar

and just save it as something like run.bat(make sure there is no .txt after it), and then run that

It does not apply to Alpha.
I do not know all the details such as light requirements, but I believe grass still can only spread 1 block parallel and diagonal, and does not grow through doors, but otherwise it doesn't matter if there are blocks above the grass anymore.

I guess I can run some tests...for science

I work at a LAN center in my town and I would love to run a SMP server from our main PC for all of the members here to enjoy together on the LAN.

I have showed many of my customers this game and 7 of them already bought it! XD
There will be about 4 more that buy it when SMP is released too, providing it supports LAN.

Does anyone know if the server software coming out Wednesday supports LAN?

Creative worked fine on LAN, and Notch even had a special "fix" for people connecting to a server on the same internet IP(ie, on the same network), and considering the offline client is ment to support offline, I have no doubt itll work over LAN

posted a message on Powered Minecart Pushing and Distance Tests.
Really nice videos, I have been watching quite a few lets play videos but hadn't come across yours, but I liked your powered minecart test videos enough so I have subbed, I will check out your other videos later :smile.gif:

And I think the main use of powered minecarts will be to get stuff out of a cave/mine, which for me is usually almost straight up, and since chunks span the entire height of the map, I assume minecarts will stay in memory no matter how far up they have to go.
Plus even if the track is more horizontal, itll just continue the moment you start heading back and get in range, the only problem, as you already found out is if you wanted to make a big looping track, it wont work unless its entirely vertical
