The new "tags" reminds me a lot of the Standard Ore Dictionary in Forge.

Mini-theory here. The magazine being published is said to contain "exploration guides". Currently, there's not too much in the game to find structure- and dungeon-wise. Here's hoping that the demand from a magazine will drive more structures to be in the game!

The mash-up pack isn't available for every version. There's no support for Java Minecraft. You might want to change that.

Can we appreciate the picture here? It's in the style of "Who's that Pokémon?".
I dunno, maybe I just get excited about little things.

Locked up the program by attempting to skip a question and it wouldn't give me a score. Mostly from going "hmmm, I wonder if I can exploit this." -

I do agree that the idea needs actual, rigorous study. It has not been verified to work except though anecdotal evidence. Minecraft is not an "out-of-the-box" tool. Currently we are at an early stage where little pre-made curriculum exists for Minecraft. This was once true with textbooks as well. If the method is successful the curriculum will develop to an out-of-the-box kit.
We don't know if it works yet. Kids like it and educators see that kids like it. In short, it's an unproven technology in its infancy that needs proper experimental studies.

Please connect the dots for me here. Because every article I read just name-drops the word "Minecraft" and touts it as an educational tool. There's never a single example of HOW it was done.
How exactly did you teach a class on "the second industrial revolution and the 1st US transcontinental railroad" using Minecraft? How does that work?
I began by designing a map centered around the Traincraft, Buildcraft, and Railcraft mods. It was roughly analogous to the U.S. with mountains in the west and plains in the center (the east was omitted for simplicity's sake). I researched the technologies that were developed and used during that time period and wrote a curriculum that would use the Minecraft technologies as a simple analogy to the more complex real-life systems.
My class had six students in it. We began by selecting either the Central Pacific or the Union Pacific routes (start in the East, get better locomotives and resources but a longer route; start in the West, get fewer resources but more opportunity for prospecting, as well as a shorter route). The students selected the C.P. Route and began building westward. Halfway through the course I assigned a three-paragraph (these were younger kids) research paper on a piece of technology we used in Minecraft and its real-life counterpart.
At the conclusion of the course we'd connected East to West (I built the U.P. Route) and were shipping goods, animals, and villagers across the country! We shipped a lot of raw resources to the East and shipped a lot of finished products to the West. The kids had a blast and I could really tell that they learned and had fun doing it! -

Honestly one of the best solutions is to remove old, detached stogies like Bennett from education...
"Hey! Teacher! Leave those kids alone!"

As an educator who has used Minecraft in the classroom, Bennett has a point. Since Minecraft is, at its heart, a game, many kids will treat it as such and tend to get distracted. In large settings, yes, Minecraft can end up being a distraction.
On the other hand, however, I have seen Minecraft work wonders for kids. I taught a class for home school students about the second industrial revolution and the first U.S. Transcontinental Railroad. Wow. The kids were immersed in learning, and ended up going above and beyond what was expected. I had a traditional assignment as well (a three paragraph research paper on an invention) that the kids did without problem.
Education should not be static. As our world changes we need to throw out old ideas (such as classic grammar education) and replace them with new, fresh ideas (such as contributing to a forum community). Encouraging self-exploration and intrinsic motivation should be the priority of our schools. I plan to homeschool all three of my kids because I feel that the public school system in the U.S. is, for the most part, ill-equipped for this task. Learning should be something students do actively, not sit in a classroom and have facts jammed into their ears.
in summary, Minecraft (like all tools) should be used responsibly for education in controlled, appropriate situations, especially not as a reward for doing "classical homework".

Fighting out in the open, especially against flying enemies, seems tough to me. I'd utilize some towers, pillboxes, and other defenses to combat vexes specifically, although they would work great in general defense as well. Raids are meant to be tough! Running in swinging a sword isn't always the best.

Having managed multiple servers since I bought Minecraft in '11, I'd say (from personal anecdote) that servers las anywhere from a few weeks to a few years, depending on management, player interest, and time of year. Most of my servers ran for 3-5 months over summers when my friends could play, although I ran one for over a year until I got my first job (which, not by coincidence, was running Minecraft servers!). It's really up to you, and how you interact with the community in and out of the game.
One big thing, I'll add, is that most people shy away from hosting and pay unreasonable fees for hosting their own servers just so they can say "I have a server". Don't do that. Either host yourself (use Hamachi if you're not keen on port forwarding) or find a community that already exists, and get your friends to join you there.

They have to deal with a lot of legal. Now that they're part of Microsoft, it happens a lot faster, but it's a slow process (people have to actually go out and investigate). The EULA applies to all servers. They had an opportunity to switch to EULA compliance (about three months) and are expected to hold up the standard.

Downgrade to Beta 1.7.3. Seriously. The terrain is absolutely gorgeous and exciting.

Here's my design for an automated sugarcane harvester. It uses the same materials. I ran into this problem with an initial design as well.

I like Pandolen's suggestion for the block. Maybe it's a wither-skull-rarity drop, though. Honestly, a drop doesn't have to be too rare or useful. Zombies drop rotten flesh, after all.

It might make for an interesting structure mob for sure. The drops should definitely be improved.
