Jesus, if only the development team had the time to implement all of firehauzurd's suggestions... If this were the case, Minecraft would truly be complete.
First of all, how would the hooks be replaced? Would they do so automatically? Would it be necessary to place them in the crafting square? Do new fishing rods come with pre-made hooks? Please elaborate.
Besides that, I actually like the idea. Currently, its much easier to simply hunt pigs rather than fish, as meat awards 4 hearts compared to the 2.5 of fish. I believe that there should be some way of hastening the pace at which we fish. Here are my suggestions:

This hook has a stronger durability, has a quicker "fish luring" time, and gives the user more time to reel the fish back in once it has made its splash (as the fish will hang on longer to eat the pork).
I'm not exactly a fan of the "put it in the crafting square" option. Instead, I think it should have a cool down bar, and automatically reload. People should have the same fire rate on their weapons, and in a stand off, someone shouldn't win just because they're good at dragging items to and from the crafting square. As suggested above, the reload time should be something like 10 seconds.
If there's anything that absolutely NEEDS to be implemented here, its ice skates and the ability to collect/produce/acquire ice. Indoor skating rinks are cool, but indoor skating rinks that have Zombies are cooler.
Hatch Dimensions/ Specifications:
-Height: 1/2 of a door
-Depth: same as a door
-Width: same as door. When two hatches are placed next to each other, they form a double hatch. This would occur in the exact manner of a double chest. The width of a double hatch is equal to that of a set of double doors (2 blocks)
-Texture: A "Rail" texture is applied to the blocks to the right and left of the hatch (the purple area of the example image). The texture of the hatch itself is up to the developers.
-Function: The hatch can be opened by redstone or left clicking. When it is opened, it "slides" up to the green side of the block in the example image. This could occur immediately, or through an animation like that of falling sand, only upwards.
Crafting Blueprint:
[]
Note: the white square represents a blank square, where no item is present.
Purpose of the hatch:
As of now, players have no way to trigger the flooding of a cavern, without doing it themselves. If the hatch was added, a source block of water or lava would be placed behind it, and when it was opened, the water or lava would flood forth. This would expand upon players' current ability to create arrow traps, and would allow them to create more elaborate traps, where the use of water or lava is involved.
