It is a scam. Notch is actually a Nigerian gangster. The Notch you see in the pictures is in fact a Norwegian model for Speedo bathing suits named Gunnar Torblatt.

posted a message on Rules for Posting Your Minecart Station
It is probably not necessary to list these rules, since most posts are already following them, but I will set them down anyway.

You will need a video. In your video:

    • You must use the butt-ugliest texture pack you can find. It cannot be obvious what any block actually is, and all blocks used in your design must have extra-busy textures and look as if they have been sprayed with a mixture of oil and grit.
    • You must film at night, or indoors, or at the very least, turn the brightness way down.
    • If you are more than twelve years old you must recruit your neighbor's pre-teen son to narrate your video, or gargle kerosene until your voice is breaking like the wind at a taco convention.
    • Drink some coffee or drop some speed before filming. Keep the camera in motion at all times, focusing on random objects, so the viewer doesn't become bored or complacent.
    • Do not even THINK about what you are going to say. Spontaneity is ... uhhh ... probably ... uhhhh ... well, you know ... whatever.
    • Resist all temptation to view your video after you finish it. You may be misled into saying, "What a load of rubbish! I should probably do this over again."
Avoid simplicity! Your minecart system must cover at least an acre and perform every foreseeable function, such as making coffee for passengers and sending overflow carts off to someone else's world save. It must look as though it would function perfectly well without you and that passengers are a glitch that will be eliminated in 1.7.

You must completely ignore the fact that your system is a minor variation on half a dozen existing designs and speak with the firm knowledge that your system is the RIGHT way to do it and all other systems are sad failures.

Leave out important points about your design so that viewers will be forced to ask questions, thus keeping your post alive. In the same vein, you must reply personally to every comment, whether it's warranted or not. Bump is thy law!!!

Great! You're doing fine. Now rest up for a day, then change one block in your design and post it as a revision. Staying alive!!!

I know I'm preaching to the choir. You're all already doing a wonderful job following these rules already. Keep up the good work!!!

Isn't -1784338777788894343 a seed that someone shared that is popular?

Yes, it's MadMaxHH's World in the Air seed. The thread for it is here:

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/221230-madmaxhh%c2%b4s-world-in-the-air/

Although I'd suggest waiting until they fix the clay/waterfall/lavafall generation bug before creating it. I created a copy today and the Great Falls area was down from ten falls to two.

Wow! I just generated a fresh copy of WIA to compare to my pre-1.6 version. El Pumpkin is missing his head and the Great Falls area, which had ten waterfalls in my world, now has two. We'll have to rename it "Not-So-Great Falls".

    Seriously, if it's a choice between long grass and waterfalls/clay, that's a no-brainer.

posted a message on Same Seed, Different World?
I'm using the World in the Air seed. After 1.6 came out, I decided to delete all the chunks that didn't have structures in them, in order to pick up the new grass and the corrected ore distribution. Some of the water and lave falls did not regenerate. For instance, the Hawkeye Heights area had both a waterfall and a lava fall that were no longer there. Luckily there were screenshots available, so I could recreate them in the same positions.

posted a message on Making your own cave vs Finding a cave system
Diamonds occur primarily in layers 0-19 or 20. Most people mine at layer 12 and up, to stay above the lave pool level. If you hit F3, your Y coordinate will be 12.6 on layer 12.

If your world was created prior to the 1.6 update, mine in the Southwest quadrant (X nad Y both positive) in the chunks that are already generated. Prior to 1.6, there was a glitch that spawned twice as much ore in the SW as the NE, and 50% more than NW or SE. As of 1.6, all new chunks that generate spawn minerals at the old SW rate.

If you want to be sure of finding extensive cave systems, create a world using one of the popular seeds like World in the Air, Glacier or Gargamel. The threads for those seeds will give you locations of large cave complexes.

posted a message on Since water ladders and boat elevators were fixed, how do you get to your mine?
Probably the fastest way down is to fall. This is the basement of my castle:

In the right background, where the signs are, is a 4X4 shaft that goes down to level 12. The minecart track goes straight down at a 45 degree angle about halfway, turns 180 degrees, then goes the rest of the way down in the opposite direction, winding up approximately straight down from where it started.

I hit the button on the other side of the block in the foreground, sending the cart down, then run over and drop down the shaft. I have a water brake at the bottom that breaks my fall (Not my design. Not sure who originated it.) This is the bottom of the shaft:

Above the ladders are three layers of water. The ladders keep it from falling. The water breaks your fall and you drop through into the area shown. I usually beat the cart down by several seconds. I send the cart down so I can ride it back up.

And at least two waterfalls that existed in pre-1.6 generations of this world don't get generated anymore. Interesting.

I deleted and regenerated the area around Hawkeye Heights, to pick up the grass, but it generated it without the waterfall and lava fall. Luckily there were pictures in this thread showing the exact positions and I was able to recreate them manually.

posted a message on Strange Water / Lava Behavior

Anything that high is useless unless you want to run three instances of Crysis 2 at the same time. Seriously, there is no point in spending that much money on a computer. Also, 24GB RAM really doesn't help more than 6 GB RAM. It's pointless use of money. Maybe in 2050 you will ever actually need it.

I'm a software developer. I run very large applications, not standalone, but from within a development/debug environment that is also fairly hefty. I run Win7 64-bit, so I can use more than 6GB. I'm not developing the software for the machines of the moment, but for the machines that will be common several years from now.

I don't think the investment was pointless. I don't want to be buying a new computer every six months. My grandson has my previous six year old machine, and he's able to run things like Black Ops and Just Cause 2 with no problems, so it's a long-term investment.

Yea this happens fairly often. Not sure why though. Btw, anything over like 80 fps is pointless and just strains your computer more, might want to cap that fps so as to not overheat.

    Computer isn't strained. It's got an i7 980X overclocked to 3.86GHz, 24GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, three GTX480s in triple-SLI and solid state disks. And it shouldn't overheat because it's water-cooled.

posted a message on Strange Water / Lava Behavior
I was branch mining below my castle on the World in the Air seed when I came across this:

A stream was coming out of a wall and then appeared to run through a trench in the middle of the lava. On each side of the trench, water appeared to be running on top of the lava.

I thought when running water hit still lava, it formed obsidian. Is this incorrect? Has anyone got an explanation for what's going on here?
