If I'm remembering correctly, 4.2 was when the new tracks were introduced and so the way the trains actually interact with the track changed and so weird stuff happens with vanilla style tracks.
Either revert to 4.14 or replace all tracks with the new ones.

Is there a way to have Traincraft integrated into texture packs? It seems like that would be easier than having to do stuff I have no idea how to do.
Afaik there is no way for a texture pack to change a trains texture but I have no experience in this area, so it would be better for you to create a thread in the texturing section on this forum and explain what you would like to do. Maybe someone will know what to do or at the very least try and figure it out with you. minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/resource-pack-help

You have to extract the .jar, make your changes, then repackage back to .jar. You need a particular program to do this though I think, can't remember. .jar isn't similar to .zip so you can't just change the format willy nilly.

AFAIK it's not that he didn't like open-source, he simply didn't have the time to sort it out.

With the way it's written at the moment it would be up to Covert for the most part to implement RC carts for TC tracks.
Unless some people can some how pull off a miracle it's always going to to be up to Covert.
