I'll just throw my ideas out there and see if you like any of them:
If I'm understanding you correctly, blocks are able to have a certain amount of Source? If so, I'd say to make Source generate randomly in veins, trapped inside of normal blocks. If a block contains Source, it can have a shimmering effect similar to enchanted items applied to the surface. The player can use some sort of "Condenser" to slowly pull Source from surrounding blocks in a certain radius. The player can visit the condenser to refill on their Source. Source can be transferred around using nodes or conduits. Make the generated veins pretty large so that a player can use them for some time before having to either move and look for another vein or use another method of generating that would be more difficult to set up but would last longer or be potentially infinite.
As for a crafting system, I would want to keep it simple just make workbenches show how much Source they're storing and require Source for some crafting recipes, and make the crafted items be the interesting part. Or you could have a more complicated crafting system like Thaumcraft's that would take significantly more effort.
As for items and uses for Source, I'll just list off some ideas that came to me as I was typing this:
- minecarts or rails powered by Source that go faster
- blast resistant blocks crafted with some Source that have a very subtle texture overlay to indicate they are Source-infused
- Source-infused tools and weapons
- Player abilities like high jump, whirlwind sprint (like Skyrim), soft landing, damage ward, etc. that consume Source when used
- Cool looking aesthetic blocks
I'd be willing to help with the modding, but I don't have much experience with modding Minecraft. I am a reasonably experienced Java developer, but it would take me some time to learn the process of writing Minecraft mods.

Apr 23, 2011The mod is now called Configurable Cake. You can now set the number of uses of the cake by dragging cakeconfig.txt from the download into the \.minecraft\mods\ folder. Then put the number of uses you want in the file. Leave it at zero if you want infinite uses. Works with 1.5_01 only.Posted in: Minecraft Mods

I have finished working out ratios for rendering values that will allow me to make the number of uses configurable. However, I am not familiar with reading from files in Java, so if someone can help me I'd be very grateful.

Mods only use ModLoader to ensure no compatibility issues will occur when placed with other mods. This mod only requires a small change in the cake block's functions, and edits only the cake block's class.

True, but tycho reacted a little too defensively and was a bit harsh, I was merely calling him out on that.
When this is updated I'm going to try to host a survival PvP server for my friends with this installed. It will be awesome :biggrin.gif:

I never knew people who used this mod were so defensive.... I agree with Manida, and so does Notch (source: MachinimaRealm live stream, when asked about guns he said that he wouldn't add any guns because they would ruin the fantasy feel of Minecraft). People like Tycholarfero need to grow up and accept the fact that people are entitled to their opinions and if you don't like it then you shouldn't be on the internet at all.
