I did realize that after watching the video posted earlier, and made the change. It allowed it to drop 1 more block, but it's still a 2 hit kill

Yes, but a two hit kill with a cooked fish or loaf of bread is still pretty easy XP :smile.gif: But the zombie armour is why I switched to skeletons.

1.2 made gold the best in terms of mining. Gold swords do more damage(Still less than diamond.), and pickaxes mine faster than diamond.

Downside is the durability is REALLY low.

So unless you have a large amount of gold tools, diamond is fine.

posted a message on Mod Manager
Thanks for the great mod, this really makes it easier to experiment with all the mods out there.

I have run into a couple problems with two mods:

-First mod is Inventory Tweaks. If I enable this through ModManager, when I load a world it gets to the 'Saving Chunks' text and Minecraft hangs. This is Modloader mod.

-The second is What's My Light Level, when this mod is enabled Minecraft loads just fine but the mod is not functioning. This is not a Modloader mod. Disregard this one. I moved the mod up so it loads before the Modloader mods and it now functions just fine.

Don't know if you'd have any insight into these issues but I thought I'd bring them to your attention.

Thanks again for some a great piece of work.

Also you want to make sure that the water channel the pushes the mobs towards the drop ends 1 block before the edge. The other mobs will push each other over the edge. If the water runs right to the edge of the drop, the mobs jump and so they splat.

Also, as noted above, because Zombies now have armour, they will always require 2-3 hits to kill with a non-weapon. I have a Zombie grinder but gave it up and went and found a skellie dungeon, guaranteed one hit kill with a 23 block drop.

Actually, Notch and the team made it so that Gold is now superior in stats, but not in durability. :smile.gif:

posted a message on Potions Are To Hard
I agree that initially getting the ingredients can be tough. The Ghast tears are near impossible but the regen potions are pretty useless so I don't care. Finding the initial batch of Nether Wart is also a trial, but once you have some, you can setup a little farm in the Nether near your portal and have all you want. The Wiki even recommends that you setup your entire potion brewing station in the Nether so that the Wart will grow while you are brewing. I did this and now have piles of the stuff.

My biggest hassle was the Glistening Melons. I spent so many hours scouring Abandoned Mineshafts and every chest stymied me. I persevered however and finally got some, like 3 heh. Again, with a melon farm setup, that quickly turned into far more melon than I'm ever likely to need.

As for the recipes, they are a bit confusing at first, but once you muddle through the process a couple of times it becomes second nature.

So, in summary, I understand the frustration but it does quickly turn the corner once you get things setup. Given the power of the potions, I think the initial difficult level is very well justified.

    Good luck!

posted a message on Gonna make an xp farm
I have a Zombie spawner and 23 is the magic number. Zombies kind of suck for XP farming though because they have armour, so it takes 2-3 hits (with a non-weapon like Bread, my personal choice) in order to kill them versus a guaranteed single hit kill with skellies.

As to the distances thing, you run into two problems. One, you need them at least 8 blocks away from the spawner so that it will keep spawning fresh bait. Two, as you pointed out, you need to be within 16 blocks to have the spawner to function at all. The solution to this is to use water to push the zombies out of the dungeon into a tower that rises about 25 levels. The tower then dumps them into a 1x2 water channel that pushes them to a second tower with the 23 block drop. The two towers are situated between you so that you are within 16 blocks of the spawner and they are quickly pulled more than 8 blocks away.

Here is a diagram, by cxnull, of what I'm trying to say:

    XP Grinder

And here is the video that taught me how to to this:

The picture and video will surely help a lot more than my crappy description. With this setup you can get to level 50 in record time.

    Hope that helps

Pretty cool, but why didn't you pause? If endermen could reach you surely other mobs could as well...

I didn't pause because I wanted my wheat, trees and sugar cane to grow. Other mobs couldn't get to me, the Endermen just teleported into my base. I've since discovered a huge cavern complex that basically wrapped around my base. Now that I've got it lit up like a Christmas tree, the only creatures who will spawn within my base are slimes, which I don't mind at all.

Truth be told, it was a pretty risky thing to do when playing Hardcore. Especially after getting all those farms setup, if I'd come back to the Game Over screen, I suspect my laptops lifespan would have been drastically foreshortened.

But it all worked out, so onward I go!

posted a message on A simple way to dont Get lost in caves
My super secret strategy has just been to let myself get lost. I wander around, sometimes in frustrating circles, taking what I hope are passages back out. If I finally give up, I'll just drill straight up to the surface. As long as you have a torch at your feet and are quick with a dirt plug, it's not too dangerous.

makes me want to try out hardcore mode. I tend to run around in dangerous places though, and I don't really enjoy the thought of losing my progress.

I highly recommend you give it a try, it really does add an extra sizzle. My game was almost over in the first hour when I drilled to bedrock and foolishly started digging around in layer 4 or 5. I punched into a lava tube and instead of plugging with dirt, I handed the nice lava a torch. Thankfully I had spent my first smelted iron on a bucket. 2 hearts away from game over. Excellent adrenaline rush.

Playing my first MC at the hardcore setting. Decided that the most hardcore miner I can think of is a dwarf, so I'm living like a dwarf. Afraid of sunlight and happiest deep down in the bowels of the earth. I have set myself up a little empire on level 16, within easy reach of the diamond layers.

A nice underground wheat farm, tree farm and sugar cane farm were my first big tasks. I had them all set up and now just needed them to do some growing. I thought I'd go AFK and take the dog for a walk. Just to be safe, I backed into a corner and stared up at the ceiling. I'd had a couple of visits from our teleporting friends and didn't want to get beat up for staring at them while AFK.

Couple hours later, I return and am filling my buckets in the well when I see something in the bottom. I jump in and low and behold 4 slimeballs. I was AFK about 4 blocks from the well and the little blighters must have fallen in and drowned. Curious about my location I checked to see if I was in a slime chunk and sure enough my base is right on the dividing line between two slime chunks. I wish I'd had the sound turned on because I'm sure I would have noticed this going on, it must have happened just before I got back in game.

So I guess I can check slime trap off my list. No thanks to me. My first slimeballs too, guess now see what all the fun things to do with sticky pistons are.

To be honest I was mostly just kidding. Starting on a new world and really wanted some diamond and got fooled twice. Was hoping too much. I don't actually have anything against Lapis. Just Saturday night I guess.

When I'm branch mining, after many hours or especially when I'm running a new texture pack, in the dim light of the tunnel.... OMG! Is it? Is it! It's di.... oh crap. Great I'll dye another sheep instead.

Got me several times tonight and I really think it's just there to yank your chain when mining. Couldn't it be some green dye colour or something.

    Anyone else?

Also with regards to powered rails and redstone torches, the powered rail must be in place before you place the torch. Can be a pain when you want to bury them under the rails.

    Hope that helps.
