posted a message on "Cannot add [username] to whitelist" and issues finding the whitelist

Yesterday I was trying to set up a server for me and my friend to play on. Everything seemed to be going smoothly as we have Hamachi taking care of the connection, since my wifi doesn't seem to like any of the port forwarding nonsense needed to get it up, but when it came time to get her connected it kept throwing an error saying she wasn't whitelisted. This is very weird since it seems like in the server properties, the whitelist is turned to "false" by default (which is the way I would like it anyway, since you can't get in unless you're a part of my hamachi network anyway). So I thought that I would try the /whitelist add command, but that didn't work. I tried adding her username manually, and that didn't work. I tried toggling back and forth between whitelist being true and false, and that didn't work.

Once I went through all that, I tried to "reload" the whitelist (I forget what the specific command is, but I think you get the picture) and it threw me a bunch of errors basically adding up to the fact that the whitelist could not be found.

    [14:10:38 INFO]: /whitelist <on|off|list|add|remove|reload>

I'm not really savvy with Java at all so I'm not really sure how to read any of these errors. All I know is that I just started the server in a folder on my desktop and didn't touch it other than to open up and attempt to add the names to the whitelist. I'm running on Windows 7 with the .jar file (because the exe version doesn't show the command line "log and chat" info for some reason). Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info than this lemme know.

    Thank you!

posted a message on Make files more accessible...?
I seriously have a couple of friends who go through a constant process of downloading the game, having it go black screen of death, and then having to wait for the next patch to have it fixed. Idk exactly what causes the black screen of death, or if there's ANY way to fix it (if its not one of the apparently obvious reasons why), but I do know that 90% of the problem could at least be resolved manually if we could actually have access to the files so we could rip them out, delete them, and reinstall. Unfortunately, unless you know where to look, the only thing you can do is remove the shortcut from the desktop (which does nothing from what I've seen).

Because right now the files get installed to some ******** directory... like C:/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming or something, which is hidden. Which I can only find half the time through a very tedious search. Idk the first thing about telling my friend how to find it on his mac.

Point is, most programs have an uninstall function. Or an easily access the program files in... Program Files. I understand if this might just be a shortcut or something that makes it compatible with more formats, since I don't think Mac OS or Linux follows the same structure Windows does, but there needs to be... something that makes it easier to uninstall, fix, reboot, alter, etc. the files of the game.

Nice new OP. Sorry I haven't been able to help much, a lot of stuff has been going on lately. Keep up the good work, I'm currently trying to go through a big to-do list to open up time to really hardcore work on this, so please be patient with me :biggrin.gif:

They are no different at all. The only point of a Mercenary is to quickly build up your ranks of soldiers, because NPCs are rare to encounter, and if you need to build up an army fast-the mercenaries are always available for a price.

I think then, for the ease of documentation, Mercs should be removed from the Job list and just be put into the notes about the Pub, since they'll be basically just a soldier for hire their actual specifications shouldn't really be any different from either the footman or the archer job.

Again, I did not format this NPC, and only made a few fixes, as I was more intent on publishing something here for people to nitpick. Here would be a better Need list:

-Needs to know how to Move in all directions :Notch:
-Needs to know how to Jump on and over a block or go around it :soil:
-Needs to know how to Access the Community Chest :chestfront: :chestfront:
-Needs to know how to Take Iron Ingots :Iron:
-Needs to know how to Smelt Iron Ores into Iron Ingots :ironore: = :Iron:
-Needs to know how to Craft Iron Ingots into Iron Plates :Iron: = :White:
-Needs to know how to Craft a Furnace :Furnace:
-Needs to know how to Put Fuel in a Furnace :Coal:
-Needs to know how to Place a furnace on the ground :grass:
-Needs to know how to Craft a Workbench :Bench:
-Needs to know how to Place the Workbench near his Furnace) :Bench: :Furnace:

-Might need to know how Craft Iron Boots :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
-Might need to know how to Craft Iron Helmets :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
-Might need to know how to Craft Iron Pants :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
-Might need to know how to Craft Iron Suits :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:

They are low priority at the moment. You can later be able to tell Hunters not to kill chickens and collect Eggs on sight or something like that, but Cakes specifically and the Chef overall may not be as much a priority right now.

The division between what is and isn't a priority just seems to be a little haphazard though. For instance, the ability for them to collect milk and eggs for cake (a useful healing item) is much higher priority than, say, the entire Monk class itself. Or making an entire separate Merc job when all that really seems to be is a soldier you pay, rather than a soldier from your colony ranks.

New topic under construction, lol(another tab). If you have any ideas on anything or input on what I'm going to put in, let me know. What will be on the topic so far:

    [engage nitpick mode]

    :Notch: :Notch: Villager :Notch: :Notch:

-Needs to know how to equip Wooden Sword :|: :wood:
-Needs to know how to use Wooden Sword :Notch: :|: :wood:

This is EPIC nitpicking, but they should- in reality -be able to at least /use/ both higher level weapons AS WELL AS using things other than swords. Reference here to see that basically all tools, except wooden & golden shovels and bows when used for melee, give the holder a greater attack rate than their bare hands. In fact, the axe (except for the diamond one) is worth just about as much as the sword heart for heart in battle. In a crisis situation a Villager would be best equipped for disaster if they grabbed ANY tool rather than only being able to use swords. All tools work basically the same as swords, the only difference is how well they work.

The Villager starts the game with 2 Wooden Swords.

Is this based upon just the need for self defense against night mobs?

    [>>-i>] [>>-i>] Mercenaries [>>-i>] [>>-i>]

STOP. Other than showing up at your town pub, are these any different from soldiers? What tasks can mercs perform, footman? Archer? Scout (if we ever implement)? It may be better to just leave this guy out or have it be a side-note in the Pub/Pub Owner that you can hire these guys for X amount of coins and they operate basically like <insert job here>.

    Preset Designs:

I appreciate the builder job, but "Preset Designs" probably needs to be relabeled "Colony Structures" or something and become its own section. This clogs up the job section, and "presets" for their building A.I. is probably another topic to have entirely.

    :bookshelf: :bookshelf: Monk :bookshelf: :bookshelf:

-Should know how to Input basic texts into a Planted Bookshelf :bookshelf:
-Should stop action when player right-clicks NPC so that he can receive whatever he is being given :Iron:

Some Text a Monk might Input could be....

"The Town Needs more Sugar Cane"
    "The Town Needs more Cobblestone"
"There Town Has too much Wheat"
"The Town Has too many Wooden Planks"
"The Town Was Attacked while you were Away"
"The Town Was Sacked while you were Away"
    "The Town Finished Repairs"
    "The Town Finished Construction of..."
    "The Community Chest is Full"
    "Currency is dwindling"

Again I appreciate this idea, but this is probably a low priority NPC to have just because it requires redesigning a LOT of memory functions and such, and it doesn't actually do anything practical for the town other than produce bookshelves which are, currently, just an aesthetic item.

:ironore: :goldore: :DORE: Miners :DORE: :goldore: :ironore:

-Should need to know how to place what he has mined into it at nightfall :SSSS:

Nitpick combo breaker: "it"? XD Say "community chest", you repeat it everywhere else.

    :Furnace: :Furnace: BlackSmith :Furnace: :Furnace:

-Needs to know how to move in all directions :Notch:
-Needs to know how to jump on and over a block or go around it :soil:
-Needs to know how to smelt ores into ingots :ironore: = :Iron:
-Needs to know how to smelt ingots into plates :Iron: = :White:
-Needs to know how to craft iron/gold/diamond swords and armor :|: :Iron:
-Needs to know how to craft a furnace :Furnace:
-Needs to know how to put Fuel in a Furnace :Coal:
-Needs to know how to use a furnace :VV:
-Needs to know how to place a furnace on the ground :grass:
-Needs to know how to craft armor :Iron: :Iron: :Iron:
-Needs to know how to make a crafting bench :Bench:
-Needs to know how to place one down (Near his Furnace) :Bench: :Furnace:
-Needs to know how to access the Community Chest :chestfront: :chestfront:
-Needs to know how to collect resources needed from it :GoldBar:

Is it just me, or is this the biggest "Need" list yet? Maybe its because all the other jobs do so little/have less important functions (because admittedly a Smith is the backbone of Minecraft society), but I also think you either repeat too often here or repeat too little elsewhere. Like isn't "Needs to know how to put Fuel in a Furnace" the same as "Needs to know how to use a furnace" in some regard?

    :Ham: :|: Hunter :|: :Ham:

Their purpose is to collect these resources with no regards to the alternate resources available(like eggs or milk), and will simply collect these things all day long to bring in a variety of supplies to meet the variety of demands.

How then will the chef make cake?

Overall this is good, just a few nitpicks to keep you on your toes. And again, some of these might be better reorganized into a more compact/logical job system rather than the superfluous ones based on no particular structure.

on a side note: sorry for pressuring animerril, its just that where i am its summer vacation so i got a lot more spare time that needed, and for the last few days i've been digging my brain into java to learn how to work with it, and am far from being finished so, yeah sorry if I annoyed anyone.

That's quite alright, Angelo. I don't actually know Java at all, I'm just rather confident I can learn it fast. What we need is someone much more saavy in modding and such, but any help on the higher level stuff might come in handy too.

    Jobs v 0.5

    1. Villager
    2. Lumberjack
    3. Farmer
    4. Builder
    5. Blacksmith
    6. Miner
    7. Hunter
    8. Footman
    9. Chef
    10. Pub Owner
    11. Archer
    12. Monk
    13. Novelty Crafter

This is probably good for the early stages of Alpha, just to get an understanding of what we're working with. I may want to reorganize later, just for coding purposes more so than actual execution purposes, but it seems good for now.

Also, we're probably going to want to use any and all external methods we can use to contact each other. For instance, I can check Facebook every day but I can't necessarily get on the forums all the time.

I currently use Facebook, Twitter, MSN/Windows Live, and Skype (ESPECIALLY SKYPE YOU SHOULD ALL GET IT ITS AMAZING FOR THIS KIND OF PROJECT). As a rule of thumb, my username is AniMerrill in all these cases. Also, in case you haven't yet, you should probably get Minecraft if you're going to be seriously involved in this mod and make sure it works... we'll need to arrange a time in the near future to get onto a group server and talk about things.

Other than that, I guess its nearly time for us to make that new thread.

EDIT: We should seriously make a wiki though, guys. Maybe not first thing, but it will seriously help organizing these ideas. Or a google wave. Idk.

posted a message on Black Screens? (Petition for Notch to amp up support)
    Dude, that's crazy.

Also, for anyone who might be skeptical of this thread (or thinks I'm ripping on Notch or Minecraft) I'm not: by letting 90% of the errors, bugs, etc go by as just forum based support threads, Notch is probably missing out on a valuable well of free testing. Support seriously needs to be set up in a new way, perhaps even having an internal error catcher in the Minecraft client, so that Notch can actually observe errors as they happen, figure out why they happen, and do something useful to fix it.

I mean, that's the point of a Beta, right?

I've tried everything, and it's still not working. The only thing that is working is when I'm playing in the browser and I don't even know how I've managed to make it work. I've just bought the came and it is kind of annoying.

Yeah, my one friend was half tempted to get his money back and cancel his account (the mac one, my other friend is able to play on another computer: no problems what-so-ever). Notch is going to lose customers if he doesn't get a more official support system working.

    same problem bump

What all have you tried to do to fix it?

Also, I will note that I have read the info in the unofficial FAQ: I'm not sure if my friends have updated drivers (or if my mac friend CAN, idk anything about macs) but everything else- like reinstalling the minecraft.exe and java updates -they have done and it hasn't worked. Neither can even play in browser mode, which I have no idea why that is.

Also, only default texture packs, skins, etc are being used. It is the Beta version of the game. They are using windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.6

    Hello all,

TL;DR in bold below OR visit the GetSatisfaction page: http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/error_catcher_proposal

This is less of a call for personal support, and more of a call for petitioning Notch. During the last few weeks, me and all my friends bought Minecraft. Two of us have perfectly working games. Two of us have our games breaking on us, and it's basically the same problem.

One is operating on a PC, the other on a Mac. Both have deleted and redownloaded the game .exe. Both have updated Java as much as physically possible while trying to solve the problem. What happens every time though is that they turn the game on and either before or after they log in, it just goes to a black screen and nothing else, making the game unplayable.

My question isn't how to fix this- UNLESS SOMEONE HAS AN ANSWER -because I have a general notion that nobody really can guess what's going wrong here. There's no error codes, no pop up windows telling us our flux capacitor broke, nothing. So I don't expect anybody on the forums to have an answer. What I want is for everyone who might be having this problem or who knows someone who has to post here about it, and what you've done to try and fix it. Or if you have any other weird problems you can't find ANY support for.

My goal is to get enough people who aren't getting their support questions answered so that Notch will finally pay attention to them. Maybe his support style worked in Alpha with fewer players, but right now it seems like the support for this game is lacking and people who paid Beta price- $20ish -and aren't even being promised free future updates at least deserve a functioning game and some reasonable support from the developer(s) themselves.

Because its kinda ridiculous. Maybe I'm overreacting. I love this game and what Notch has done, but he needs to stand behind his product when it doesn't work too. Comment below please.

We really almost need to make a wiki or a MASSIVE collection of the ideas in the OP or something so everything can be easily referenced without looking through the entire thread. That, #1, is what will make the programmers of this mod's life extremely easy. Also, it will keep new viewers from suggesting things we've already agreed on or suggested...

Especially the list of jobs, that way I can start forming that job hierarchy I was talking about before. That will be the first step to programming this, probably, is to determine what steps we'll have to go through to program the A.I.

Hey, sorry for kinda ducking out... I didn't forget about you guys, I just... you know, kinda have a life. I'll try to get the first banner done within the hour. From now on, you should probably not expect my participation Monday thru Thursday... you'll probably more often than not get my full weekend of attention though XD

A little big. Maybe a resize is in order? Idk, I'll test it out in my siggy.

    EDIT EDIT=====

Was not aware sig images could only be 110 px high. Certainly puts a damper in my plans... this may be too small now

    EDIT EDIT EDIT ========

This damn forum needs auto image resizing.... It will technically work, but in order to see all of it I need to make it even smaller. I'm not sure how good it will even look then.

As good as I can probably get it without having to completely redo. I'm sorry for all the edits, I just didn't realize how ABSOLUTELY small you had to make your sig images.

Oh WOW, I never realized that the poster had so many similar versions and stuff. Interesting. But, I think the first one would be good for our signature, the second one might be a funny one to put at the top of the OP or any sites we end up having to support it (i.e. if we ever made a wiki... which I would sorta suggest). Either way, I'll probably end up editing and coloring both when I have the chance. Variety never hurts.
