I would love to have a tool which allows you to swap all bits of a certain kind for another kind. There have been plenty of times when I've been working along with one texture and later decide that I really would like something else. it would be great to have something which can save me the effort of removing all the old material and putting in new material.

I've recently started to use Chisels & Bits, and it has quickly become my favorite mod! I've created a mod spotlight which carefully explains the various features Chisels & Bits, and a Let's Play series which follows the progress our server where I've been using it heavily. Just to tempt your curiosity... my main building is built around 64m diameter circle for a floor plan with a large central courtyard. Lots of glass arches and spiral staircases abound. Here's a picture gallery of what we've been building on the server (which you're quite welcome to use however you'd like).

I can confirm that planks created the normal way do contain NBT data. Just add some to your inventory and use the NEI Addons dump tools. You'll see something like this:

    15,Hickory Wood Planks,64,11,0,ExtraTrees:planks,tile.planks,binnie.core.block.ItemMetadata,{meta:11}

That bit after the last comma is the NBT data. sigh Any idea why this should cause multipart blocks not to work?

I'm trying to use alternate fuels with version 5.1.0, and I'm not having any luck. I've updated the config file as described in the instructions (full config in the spoiler below) and this did change things a bit. Now, the fuel slot allows the bucket to be placed, but it doesn't actually empty the bucket or increase the fuel in the plane. I've also tried putting lava buckets in the fuel slot, and, despite my having removed that value from the config, it accepts the lava as fuel (including emptying the bucket). I've tried both Biodiesel from Immersive Engineering as well as Fuel from Buildcraft, but neither works. Any suggestion as to what may be going wrong?

I've been quiet here for a while, but that's not because the site has been standing still! Of course, there are a whole bunch of new mods: Agricraft, Hydraulicraft, ProjectRed, and Tinker's Construct, just to name a few. More than that, crafting has gotten a major overhaul as well. You can now remove steps from crafting plans, adjust your inventory, and add new items all before hitting a button to get a new plan. It completely changes the experience; try it! And, if that wasn't enough... the entire site has been rewritten from scratch to work on any device from a 30" desktop monitor down to a 4" phone screen! Just imagine working on your next huge build with crafting guide showing your step-by-step crafting plans on your phone... take a look: http://crafting-guide.com

For recipe balance, the main thing to consider is how much capability one gains from making something, and to make the materials you need to gather kinda match up. For example, with Galacticraft, here's what you need to make a rocket to get to the moon. Or, using Mekanism, here's what you need to make a jetpack. You might check out Immersive Engineering's windmills. For the kind of light-weight aircraft your mod currently has, something along those lines might work pretty well.

In any case, here's a quick breakdown of something I would consider pretty reasonable as a player:

(formatted as: item : top row / middle row / bottom row)

    strut: wood slab x 3 / stick x 3 / wood slab x 3

flight surface: empty / string, empty, string / wood slab x 3

    wing: wood slab x 3 / wing strut x 3 / wood slab, flight surface x 2

cockpit windows: wood plank, glass pane, wood plank / glass pane, empty, glass pane / wood plank, glass pane, wood plank

engine housing: wood plank, iron ingot, wood plank / iron ingot, empty, iron ingot / wood plank, iron ingot, wood plank

landing gear: empty, wood plank, empty / iron ingot, iron ingot, empty / empty, iron ingot, empty

    landing gear assembly: empty / wood slab x 3 / landing gear x 3

fuselage section: wood plank x 3 / wood plank, strut, wood plank

engine section: empty / engine housing, fuselage section, empty / empty

tail section: empty, fuselage section, empty / flight surface, wing, flight surface / empty, flight surface, empty

airframe: cockpit windows / engine section, fuselage section, tail section / landing gear assembly

The airframe, then is what you can place in the world, very much like what you currently have. From there, you can equip it with seats (current recipe is perfect), engines, and propellers.

    engine: empty / redstone x 3 / iron block x 3

prop: wood plank, empty, empty / empty, iron ingot, empty / empty, empty, wood plank

You might also have different recipes depending up on what materials other mods add. For example, you might replace some of the wood in the fuselage for canvas or fabric if some other mod adds it (e.g., Immersive Engineering), replace black wool for rubber for tires (e.g., Industrial Craft), and replace iron for aluminum in the engine (e.g., Galacticraft).

Realistic weight is another one of the new features in the upcoming update. To get around the problem of which items are heavy, I simply look at their names. Anything with iron or gold in the name is counted extra, with the total weight being equal to the current capacity of the chest/player. The heaviest plane is one with two players that have just come back from mining ore.

For purposes of compatibility with other mods, it would be very helpful for this to be configurable as well. If the user can specify a list of item IDs with associated weights, they can fill in other blocks with ought to be "heavy" for their mod pack.

What's with the love of mouse control? I always hated how with the other two mods I had to 'rev-up' the mouse to turn, and the not having a mouse makes looking around hard. Mcheli does a good job of letting you unlock the mouse, but even then you'd better stay on your toes as you've just lost yoke control. The largest hurdle to mouse control is that it reads relative position, which means that I'd have to do some fancy calculating to find what the yoke should be.

I think there are two main reasons I'd prefer mouse control:

First, you can move the mouse much more rapidly and with much greater subtlety. With a mouse I can instantly move the yoke from one extreme of its range to another, or a can make fine adjustments which are smaller than the "step" amount of a single keypress. It's also possible to make smooth continuous motions which are impossible with keypresses. With keyboard commands, you move the yoke by exactly the same quantum for each keypress. That means you need quite a few keypresses (and therefore more time) to make large gestures, and it's impossible to make gestures smaller than the amount moved by a single key press.

Second, with a mouse, there's no need to have the yoke return to a center position automatically. When I move the mouse, the yoke moves. When I don't move the mouse, the yoke doesn't move. To use the same example from my first post, when I'm climbing out, I can fine-tune the exact climb rate and just leave the mouse exactly where it is to maintain that angle. Once I've reached my cruising altitude, I can adjust again to find the right spot for level flight. With the yoke constantly moving out from under me, both of these require constant fiddling. Combined with the fact that truly fine gestures are impossible with keyboard controls, it makes the experience feel very fiddly and frustrating.

Is it just the visuals you're wanting? I'm sensing some sort of issue behind these problems, but I can't peg it.

You're right that the visual is a "nice to have". Really, it comes back to the points I made about mouse control. The combination of clicking buttons and the yoke automatically changing position makes it very hard to get a good feel for where the yoke is at any given time. Having some sort of visual indicator would help if other solutions aren't forthcoming.

First of all... WHAT A GREAT MOD! I've loved flight simulators for a long time, and have always been very disappointed with the different "flight" mods which have come by. This one is head and shoulders above anything else out there! I can't tell you how eager I am to see it continue to develop.

In the spirit of helping things develop, here are some things which felt broken or missing when I was playing around with the most recent build:

    1. +1 on the request for using liquid fuels from other mods. As a work-around for having to automatically figure out whether a given liquid can be used as a fuel, perhaps it would be sufficient to simply add a config setting with the MC ids some of the most common ones (e.g., Buildcraft Fuel, Galacticraft Fuel, Forestry BioFuel, etc.)
    2. +1 on the request for an artificial horizon gauge. Especially when I overran Minecraft's rendering, I became completely disoriented and wound up crashing because I had no visual indicator of the horizon or my climb rate.
    3. Left-clicking the place is too unexpectedly destructive. Even having read the earlier comments about it, I was still expecting the plane to have *some* resistance to injury. I can smack a real 172 pretty hard without it taking any damage. I'd expect the plane to react very much like a boat or a minecart... one hit nudges, but you have to smack it a few times in a row to break it. Then, when broken, I'd have expected to get the airframe back again along with the rest of the parts.
    4. The stall behavior seems unrealistically unforgiving. In a real 172, you stall when you lose too much airspeed, but you come right out again once you gain it back (losing some altitude in the meantime). Provided you started with enough altitude, it's really not even a particularly dangerous maneuver. In the mod, though, once you've stalled, it's like the yoke has broken off. You can pull and pull, but you can't do anything to pitch up, even if you do get back your airspeed.
    5. The interaction between yaw and roll doesn't seem right. Normally, applying the rudder will rotate the plane a fairly small amount, but you need to roll and pitch up to actually change your direction of travel substantially. In the mod, applying the yaw control seems to just spin you like a top without any roll or pitch component.
    6. The altimeter seems to read 0 at y=0 rather than sea level (y=64 in Minecraft). Not sure if that was deliberate, but I figured I'd mention it.
    7. It feels like the yoke returns to a neutral position a little too quickly. For example, when climbing out and trying to maintain both good airspeed and a good climb rate, I have to constantly tap the "S" key for short bursts to keep myself at the right angle. I think it would be more natural if the yoke stayed put when I let got of the key for 3-4 times longer than it does.

In addition to all the other great ideas mentioned earlier in the thread (e.g., more planes, etc.), I thought these might also be nice features to add:

    1. The weight of the fuel and cargo should count as part of the mass of the plane for purposes of flight physics. This is pretty hard to figure for arbitrary cargo, but you might say each item is worth n lbs, and allow specific items to be assigned weights in a config file (e.g., gold blocks would be a lot heavier than the "average"). The player and his inventory would likewise count in the weight.
    2. Add a float plane. In Minecraft, there aren't a lot of natural airfields hanging around, so exploring the world by plane just isn't going to happen. However... there often are sizable bodies of water around...
    3. Add a parachute. More than once, I found myself about to crash, and would have gladly bailed if I didn't know that I'd die just as surely from the fall as the crash.
    4. Make the plane frame itself more "expensive". This might mean you have to individually build the cockpit, tail section, rudder, elevators and wings. Then, you can place the cockpit down and add in all the other parts. Or perhaps you use the crafting table to "craft" the parts together into an airframe.

For what it's worth... I think the flight controls would be much more satisfying if they used the mouse to control the pitch and roll. I suspect that's not at all an easy thing to accomplish (which is why you did it this way), but a lot of the problems I encountered with the controls wouldn't be possible with a "joystick"-like input device. Short of that, I think I'd like to see some kind of visible yoke / rudder pedals in the cockpit, and have the keyboard controls adjust their position, rather than the plane's.

Loads of feedback, I know, but all meant with the best intentions to be constructive and honest. As I said to start with... this is already so much better a flight mod than anything else out there, and I'm eager to see it develop!

I'm super excited to announce that I've added full multi-block support for Crafting Guide! For example, check out a 5-Core Reactor from Big Reactors, or the 5x5x5 Steel Tank from Railcraft. I'm really pleased with how it turned out! Tell me about any multiblocks you'd like to see, and I'll make sure they get added!

At long last, I've got some more big news about Crafting Guide! I've just finished a completely new crafting algorithm. Instead of just taking the first crafting plan it comes up with, it tries to compute every possible plan, rates them, and then picks the best one. So far, it's already coming up with a few plans which are better than what I could have done by hand!

Today I launched the second major part of the item description editor: image uploads! As you enter your description, use the markdown notation for an image: ![](image.png) and a empty image preview will show up underneath the editor. Click the button to select an image from your computer. Just be sure to keep the images to a reasonable size (< 750kB, and < 740px by 600px). Feel free to test it out by helping to add some item descriptions!

It's been a while since I've posted an update, but that's not because I haven't been busy! Today I launched the first of many features allowing people to contribute content directly on the site. Log in, and you'll be able to add or edit item descriptions using GitHub-flavored Markdown. Of course, since this is a pretty new feature, there's a lot to do in adding descriptions, but this is the first step!

I've been working on a big new feature for a while now, but I didn't want to leave everyone without anything new for so long... So, I've just finished adding MineFactory Reloaded! Enjoy!
