Would it be feasible to add a feature to Amidst that generates a heightmap of the terrain and overlays it? It wouldn't check height for existing chunks, it would just sample the terrain generation algorithm (similar to how Amidst samples the biome generator). It sample data for 1 column every 4x4 blocks in area, or 8x8. Such a feature would make searching seeds an order of magnitude faster.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the world generator up to this point doesn't create terrain above y=128.
yeah I always teleport to 128 myself just in case, though technically in jungle hills the trees can grow even higher. I've found that searching for near max height mountains has been very productive because the terrain generator tends to want to do funky stuff with it (hence wanting a heightmap feature for Amidst.)
There is a plains area near spawn absolutely packed with horses, with cows available and a village located around 800, 800. It is cupped by gorgeous mountains, here's a picture of my farm there:
I remember my grandfather, sitting on his porch, caressing terrain seeds. "Aminom" he said, "A seed is like a beautiful woman. The more you caress it, the more beautiful it becomes. It speaks to you."
How did you find this; did you really just create a new world and it was there?
I hunts for seeds, been doing it since beta. I use the program Amidst to generate random seeds and quickly appraise them based on biome layout (I tend to look for larger mountain ranges close to spawn) and then teleport around promising seeds in game. A seed will generate similar terrain throughout, so I look for cues that suggest that the seed could produce epic terrain- for example overhangs, tall mountains, etc.
If you get black spots (lighting glitches) the easiest way to fix to to use MC Edit, select the entire area, click "relight" on the chunk control menu, and save. You can also try reloading the chunks (saving/quitting or moving to the area in back) and most lighting glitches fix themselves in normal play. Placing blocks and/or torches also works.

Thanks so much for your hard work in creating and maintaining this excellent program! It's blazingly fast, which is essential for seed hunting. The new version is even better: random numbers when no seed is entered is perfect for seed hunting, as is copying the seed value directly using control C.
One question: how robust is the pseudorandom number generation? Is it the same as vanilla?
Have you played one Minecraft since 1.8??? [/sarcasm] The terrain generator generates mountains like that all the time now. Explore in creative for a while and you'll find them.
Ha. It doesn't generate mountains like dem all the time, junior girl.
Go there yourself and see, or watch the video. Dem mountains all over, baby.
Just one area of the video is viewable at 2:53, and shows a massive, deep overhang complex.
Or better yet, find a seed with more extreme mountains then these, if they is so common. Hell, I'd love you for it a little, and would happily gargle thou gonads.

Not content to merely make epic extreme hills, this seed also makes this glacial cutout wonder located a reasonable distance from spawn.

The new version is awesome. It will give you a random seed if you don't enter a value. I have "control n enter enter" keybound.
I just hope that it updates quickly when 1.7 hits, since that's the big terrain gen thing.

EDIT: not actually one question.

It's ironic because by some people's tastes this is one of the best seeds of all time, but people focus on the title. Hipsterdom retained.
