Its only true because when you clear an area as large as a dirt or gravel pocket, you are likely to find some ore.

Dig out a cave the same size as a gravel pocket and see if you find the same thing.

Maybe so, but the point is if it's true or not. And you said it is. ^^

Just because you found some ore behind some gravel, doesn't mean that there are always some ore behind gravel. From the Alpha thread on mining, they decompiled the spawning code of mineral deposits, and there was no correlation between gravel and ore

    This.

We understand EXACTLY how it is coded, so much so that there is a mod (the biome mod), that lets you manipulate gravel and dirt and ore deposits. There is nothing in the code that supports the OP's theory.

It has been straight up proven false.

If you think you can dig through it quickly enough to make it more efficient than stone, or whatever, then fine (I doubt it, though). But the statistics per block are no different for ore being in dirt tan in stone. Or if anything, they are actually LOWER for dirt (if dirt is calculated after ores, which I believe it is)

God you people don't get it..
I know you can find ore in both stone and in gravel/dirt deposits, but it's just the odd fact that at least 2/3 of the time I run into dirt/gravel deposits, I find an ore or a cave right behind it.
I'm pretty sure it's not dumb luck because it happens to me all the time throughout my possibly 3 month's now playing Minecraft. It's a regular thing for me.

As it's been said before, you dig through dirt at a fraction of the time it takes you to dig through stone, so you can clear tens of meters in a few seconds. That gives the impression that behind dirt is always something, but the truth is that if you could dig through stone at the same speed (or if digging out dirt were slower), that sensation would be gone.

I don't know about gravel, might be that it collapses and covers pathways, but honestly everytime I find it there is enough to cover up to the ceiling, so I'm unsure about it.

Makes sense, but you can distinguish gravel/dirt from stone obviously, so I'm basically saying that it can be sort of an indicator to "Possible mineral and/or cave".

Everyone who believes in this theory, please read these:

    Correlation does not equal Causation
    Confirmation Bias

    It will explain a lot.

Those two things are hard-wired into people's brains, it takes some training to break those ways of thinking and let go of pet theories that sound good.

I've found dozens of gravel deposits that were only surrounded by dirt or rock. I bet you have too, you just don't remember them because they're boring and finding stuff is cool.

Oh I have found gravel/dirt pockets with nothing around them before. But I still do more often than I don't.

I realize that some people are rather young on here or just don't know much about how programming works and so are often naive about these sorts of theories, but really, these sorts of theories are so silly. The chance alone is so likely to result in you finding ore or a cave touching a gravel or dirt patch that it would be really redundant for him to program that it specificly ocurrs near these patchs. Without knowing what or what he hasen't said, I can guarentee that he has not programmed it this way. I give him much more credit then to do something so dumb.

Yes... I don't know much about programming, but explain to me why more than 2/3 of the time when I dig out a gravel/dirt pocket, I find either a mineral or another cave? It's surely not luck because it happens regularly, throughout my playing Minecraft.

I never said I found "some coal" behind "some dirt".
I said that happens to me almost all the time.

A little while ago I developed a theory that gravel or dirt hides either some sort of mineral, or another cave entrance, and I mean deep underground. About 2/3 of the time, whenever I run into a gravel/dirt pocket deep underground, it often opens up to another cave or coal/iron/etc.

If you all agree with this theory, then this may become something known in Minecraft (=O). I've setup a poll right up there, so vote on what you all think. I may be wrong, but personally it happens to almost all the time.

It's happened to me quite a few times. It's a glitch that I learned, and a lesson that I learned the hard way.
Basically, if you're playing Minecraft (Singleplayer of course), and the computer shuts down, my guess is it totally interrupts the process of Minecraft saving, or whatever, and it becomes corrupt, so it glitch's and says that there is no world there, but in fact there is, it's just hiding it.

I've done that a few times chickening out, accidently burning down wooden houses/structures, then quickly thinking to myself "Quick, turn it off so it won't save!" Like I said, I learned the hard way because it acts as if you have died and your items don't actually drop.

So heads up people, NEVER turn off your computer in the middle of playing a Minecraft world.

I personally think strip/branch mining is the best, because you basically clean up the underground of all that nice stuff, which would be :Diamond:. =O

I am sorry if I can't see eye to eye with notch's methods but clearly this is not close beta.
Usually in alpha we actually got decent updates and such, Example; Halloween update.
So what happened to the "Beta" update?
This should mark a new day for Minecrafters as a new era of Minecraft but I see is a very wasted update.

Here's the the patch updates of what we have received.
    * Working server-side inventory! Finally! (And as a result of that, a whole pile of bugs and issues got fixed)
    * Made SMP servers save chunks way less often in most cases. Chunks don’t resave if they got saved in the last 30 seconds
    * Moving too far away from a container, or having it blow up, closes the inventory screen
    * Fixed /kill
    * Introduced leaf decay again. It acts differently from before
    * You can now throw eggs
    * On a whim, added super exclusive clan cloaks for Mojang Employees
    * .. and something else, which is even more rare

Server side inventory, Sure that great but there only one problem.
Where will all the custom building servers go? They allowed in-game editors for builders to easily make buildings look EPIC and actually had fun playing the game, You also have manage to get 2 new ways dupe(Which by they way are VERY fast to dupe items, I'm talking about duping stacks(64) of any-item within seconds and being able to get a full inventory within 1minute. Now server side inventory's aren't going to help you there.

You say you made chunk saves save way less often?
I say that you have made single player nearly impossible to play with how much lag is going on now DUE TO the chunk update.

You have fixed a very minor container glitch?
I am sorry to say must players really never noticed it and it wasn't really game ruining.

You added /kill command to multilayer servers?
I am sorry to say people already made better ways to use the /kill command on there servers.

    You can throw eggs!?!?!?
You got to be joking me all you did was copy and paste the snowball throwing code and change the appearance so it looks like an egg now, Also you didn't even update the hitting appearance as it still looks like a normal snowball breaking.

    And that something really rare?
I doubt that you added it, You are most likely going to say something that was already in game or something that is so common that isn't rare for us players to think of.

Yes I know that I am going to get criticized a-lot but I don't believe this isn't anywhere close to being called an Official beta release.

Tell everyone this. What is the definition of "Beta"?

That's cool I just want my laptop to go back to 30 fps instead of 5.

    Deal with it.

You bought an unfinished game, live with its faults.
Get off your high horse **** head.

It is so pathetic how all these Notch worshiping idiots refuse to admit that notch screwed up when he obviously did, chunk updates are going crazy and frame rates have gone to hell.

Pathetic? Could you please go troll somewhere else? He has a perfect point and it does NOT need to be ruined by you ****ing trolls.
Sure, he made a little bit of a mistake, and some pretty bad framerate problems, but guess what he and his team is doing? FIXING IT. So just wait and quit whining like a little *****.
It's so sad how so many people have no idea what the definition of "Beta" is.
