Some things that I would suggest to anyone who is making videos are:
1. Do it for fun.
-I see too many people starting youtube channels in hopes of getting fame, and money, and whatever. Do not do that. That is what I would call making videos for the wrong reasons. There are too many youtubers already out there, and expecting hundreds of subs and likes in your first few videos is going to end bad. This is because there are so many youtubers, it is hard to find out about new ones.
So, I would say, just make videos for the fun of it. Don't let the views/likes/comments disappoint you. Just do it for the fun of making videos. You will be much happier.
2. Be yourself.
-It's soooo annoying to have to watch some commentator that is over trying to be funny. Personally, I never subscribe to any of those people, including ones that scream the whole time. It gets really annoying, really fast.
So, I would suggest, just be yourself, be calm and relaxed. I know there isn't one person on the planet that screams and laughs the whole time, so that is not their original personality. If you are being yourself and doing what you like, then subscribers with the same mindset will be the ones that subscribe to you. This will keep both sides happy. And this will prevent scenarios where the viewers want something, but the commentator doesn't want to do it.
3. Make sure you have a good computer and a proper quality mic. It is generally not a good idea to record without those things. It WILL effect on how many people will stay and watch your content. I know this is one of those things that players usually can't fix right away, but it needs to be done eventually. Generally speaking, do not record videos if your computer lags and you have a terribly quality mic. This, unfortunately, is the case with me. I have a 2010 laptop with no graphics card and a horrible mic. I've been wanting to record videos forever, but I can't with my gear
4. Your commentary:
-Relax, don't let this stuff stress you out. Do it because it's fun and you will be fine. Talk as if you're talking with your friends. If you're still worried about your commentary skills, just post a video of your commentary and we can review it. I'm always happy to do this sort of things for other players. Also, maybe try watching some other youtubers. See how they talk and what they talk about. You need to keep your audience entertained without making yourself sound annoying by talking too fast, or too slowly, or just whatever. It takes time to find the right balance, but that is just something you need to practice with.
5. Channel art:
I see wayyyyyyyy too many people here worry about that crap. Tbh, those things don't matter half as much your commentary does. It doesn't matter if you have an amazing intro, beastly channel art, cool thumbnails, and whatever. If your commentary is not good, those things are a waste.
Hope that helps a bit. Let me know if your need anymore help. I'd be happy to assist:D

Dogda posted a message on Why you will never be good at youtube. You will never be good at youtube. You will not be creative and connected like captainsparklez, funny like the yogscast, or as good as that one guy with the parkour videos. I am not saying this to dishearten you or make you stop, because I am in the same boat. Youtube is a scary place, so please let this nobody give you some tips.Posted in: Other Help
You are bad at videos. I am, you are, that one guy with the swooping intro and not much else is. This is not a bad thing. Creating things, such as lets plays and more complicated videos will involve refinement and trial and much error. You will never find the way that works best for you, and if you do, then you are going to get stale. Yes, use ways that work well, but do not be afraid to try new things out, even if other people don't like them.
As important as quality is to discuss, quantity is a hard thing to look at too. Do I put out a lot of bad videos, or work so hard on this one video that you only make one a year? If you want to build up a group of people that enjoy your videos, I feel as though you need to be fairly consistent with your uploading schedule. For lets plays, more videos, more often is probably good, but don't go too overboard unless you can manage it.
Finally, you are not going to get famous. This is not a frightening thing, it is a freeing thing. Do things that you like, or do things that your friends find interesting. Do things for that small group of followers. If you become "famous" it will not be of your own merit or because of some formula. Any fame bottled up and sold to you is not what you want.
I was just having a few thoughts running through my head, and I wanted to share them with the forum that always seems to cry out the most for advice and listeners. Feel free to post your channels with a little description of what you do. Peace! -

MysteryMan7 posted a message on Giveaway - Left 4 Dead 2See here's the thing, when you do a giveaway to get subs, it's a one time thing. You won't be able to get a Youtube channel going by just doing giveaways.Posted in: General Gaming
Okay, I am a HUGE small Youtube supporter but I can't subscribe to someone that doesn't do videos at the moment. What videos do you plan on doing? You seems to have a nice mic, not too bad of a video recorder and a nice enough PC to run L4D (even though that's not saying alot xD) but yeah, I would like a copy of L4D but I am not going to cheat you out of a subscriber by me just subbing for the game and never watching again.
But good luck on your channel, and have fun!
EDIT: Your name is very catchy and fun too say ^-^ -

KEK_INC posted a message on Right Wingers on PPNS Forum SectionI consider myself centrist libertarian. I'm left-wing for social issues & right-wing for economic issues.Posted in: Politics, Philosophy, News and Science
Since most people here are left-wing on both social and economic issues, I tend to be rather right-wing in retrospect to this forum.
On debate forums, no one necessarily 'wins'. If there's an imbalance, there's usually a lot of circle-jerking and then attacking on the unpopular opinion. The unpopular opinion either gets overwhelmed or had a poor point to begin with.
Part of the problem with PPNS is that most of us (including me :P) don't know jack- about politics or economics, and we all lack experience. We base our political views on a rather narrow band of information that we see at school or on the web. Unfortunately, many people believe their political belief is 'absolute' and 'objectively sound', and a lot of ignorance stems from that. Many people believe that their perception of logic is the only right answer, and that "progress" (a very subjective term) is necessary at all times. With this arrogance, people tend to circle their points around, and people don't want to 'lose an argument'. You tend to see a lot of brick-walled arguments on this forum.
Also, many people abuse buzzwords and call people out on fallacies while either committing to the fallacy or falsely accusing someone of it. No one owns up to it, and it tends to turn into a storm real fast. I was guilty of this a couple of times (as well as my opponent). -

I've had a couple of encounters in which guys have asked me whether or not I was a girl, and when I truthfully told them that I was in fact female, they didn't believe me. LOLPosted in: General Gaming
But anyway, back to the question: I don't really see the problem in using a character of the opposite gender as long as it isn't for perverted reasons. I used to use male characters in an online dancing game just because it was easier to get into the couple dancing rooms, which was a mode that I liked a lot.
There's also the fact that some people do it for aesthetic purposes. Sometimes, games tend to prefer one gender over the other when making special outfits, so some people choose a character of the opposite gender just for the customizations. -

Homem_Pigman posted a message on Your Favorite Video Game Character?Posted in: General Gaming
There was always something about this mad scientist that felt different from other villains. And while it doesn't take that much for me to like an antagonist, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is one of the few that had immediate appeal.
Look at him. He's a real mastermind. With wizards and other more magical or ancient villains, you tend to expect that they'll be able to do things like rip holes in time and make barren wastelands and all... but when a normal guy with no superpowers and nothing but a PhD does all of that, and even more? Robotnik is a genius. He makes his own plans and dirty work. But that's not all. He has balls. Does he hide away in his lab, sit down and make everyone else dish out the damage? Nope. In the majority of games he appeared in, he served as most of the bosses and often the only one. His utter fearlessness is one of the details - alongside putting cuddly critters in robots - that define him. Without his glee in going into the battlefield, you no longer have Ivo.
Eggman is a great character. The duality between his extreme charisma, goofyness and evil is extremely interesting and what makes him so recognizable and notable. Eggman is such a likable and endearing character while at the same time being an evil *****. But most of all, I love him for his brilliant and variable schemes. Now, I'm not having a go at Bowser or other similar baddies, but Robotnik is one of those villains who have no limit to what you would expect him to pull off in terms of fiendish schemes.

Close, close second is Robert House from Fallout. Fantastically written, and the splendid voice acting from René Auberjonois helped as well. There's just a dynamic to House that makes him so interesting. A brilliant man who survived the destruction of the world and yet, uses all his genius to attempt to rebuild humanity to have the same prosperity it once did.
A staunch pragmatist by nature, Mr. House formulated the whole plan that brought the plot of Fallout: New Vegas to begin. He's the only person in the whole post-apocalyptic wasteland with a plan that actually has long-term benefit for mankind, and considering his background, certainly the most capable to execute it.
As a side note, I love the development in his interaction with the Courier. At first he may come off as a bit of a **** to you; but he still sees something special in you, and when you follow through, you gradually see that he truly does care about you, and in the whole end sequence he shows much respect to you, even though he in fact is the big guy here. That, and his whole plan by extension, shows that in addition to being brilliant, House is also a great human being and definitely the one you want to help. - To post a comment, please login.

Minecraft commentary is an awkward balance in LPing, because it is much more about the presenter than the game itself usually unless doing tutorials or minigames.

If they like it, they'll share it, if they like it, they'll likely want to see it expand in scope - is my logic.
Tying giveaways to channel growth also leads to subscriber spikes and decay (which can be demoralizing at times) - ie they spike up to get the giveaway to trigger, then unsub after it's over (which means your subs can peak to the amount, and then you'll drop back below that amount... kinda weird to have the same milestone twice lol)
I'd rather have people interested in the ongoing projects get the giveaways/contests, and the loyal subscribers get the expansion and growth basically.

^ that. just seriously, THAT.
I create videos for my subscribers to enjoy... I don't gather subscribers for my videos to enjoy (see how ridiculous it sounds to put them backwards?)
Part of what makes youtube something you can enjoy long-term is the ability to interact and engage with your community, listen to their feedback (whether it's just a click of the 'like' button or an actual reply or PM). While I can't remember the almost 800 names of my subscribers off the top of my head, I can tell you - there's quite a few that if I saw their youtube screen names elsewhere, I would recognize them.
Now that I've said my piece as to why I see this as a bad idea... (ie it devalues your channel, and generally is a sign that you're not in this for the long-term if you're subscriber collecting)... I should probably play a bit of devil's advocate.
"Devil's Advocate" - generally speaking, the higher your visible sub-count, the more likely 'random people' are to subscribe to you due to 'group think'.
Though, I have to say, the Devil's Advocate TO the devil's advocate... is that fake subs will drop off (inactive accounts get 'de-subbed' regularly enough that it's an actual analytics statistic youtube displays), and on top of that, 'subscriber spam'/'view spam'/etc. "services" can and will get your account suspended/banned and your ability to use adsense removed permanently.

The issue youtube seems to not realize, is gaming is the vast majority of the long-tail, and a good chunk of the spike... So I don't think they realize how drastically this is going to impact them (Not sure the cause of the change to MCNs, but it's there - the ContentID system has not changed, it's no more 'anti-gaming' than it was before the change, it just applies to more people)
I could go into more detail about how it all works, but yea - this isn't the place. Simply put, it's not the end of gaming channels or even Let's Plays, but rather an end to the 'way we do it now'. (I'm not an LPer usually anyways)
1
There's a lot of misinformation going around about this... simply put, it's going to be a rough road ahead for gaming channels on youtube, but it won't kill them off.
1
The whole point being, you want a substantial record-to drive... unless you would rather have a program handle the compression during recording (there's pros and cons to both methods... but having a history in the visual arts, I always go for the "It's easier to simplify" philosophy - basically it's easier to lower something's fidelity, than to try to repair it while scaling it up)

What is Level 14?
Level 14 is an organization designed around helping gamers on Youtube/twitch/etc. find and collaborate with other talented or creative individuals. The eventual goal being to serve as an organization for gamers to work together both in gaming and non-gaming collaborations to explore their interests, talents, and creative desires. Simply put, to step forward and say, "We are not just gamers, we are creators!"
This group was originally founded in July 2013 by the YouTuber who goes by the name "Alzorath", and has been recruiting behind the scenes in preparation to launch into the initial public stages. Currently the full memberlist is not public.
An additional goal I have, is to also serve as a place to foster new hopeful creators by helping them develop the skills and knowledge necessary to develop a healthy and consistent channel for those who enjoy their work, and allow them to take a direction THEY can enjoy and be proud of (whether it's gaming, music, vlogging, or any array of other interests). This will become more 'possible' as progress is made on developing the last little bit of infrastructure needed.
Why Minecraft?
Minecraft is easily one of the most elegant platforms that emphasizes the point of individuals being not only gamers, but also creators. In Minecraft you can be a competitor - vying for victory in an arena or tournament. In Minecraft you can be a creator - developing complex redstone circuitry or elaborate beautiful builds. In Minecraft, you get to choose what you are. While Level 14 is not exclusive to Minecraft, I want the game to be a part of the roots of the gaming side of the organization, if for no other reason than how simply it shows this. It also serves as a great filter for developing a baseline for understanding the interactions of collaborators, coordinators, and creators.
Below you will find our latest projects, as well as answers to any questions brought up in this thread. Latest project will be fully visible, old projects will be put in 'spoiler' tags (but remain here for navigation purposes)
--- Minecraft Project 1 - Ultra Hardcore Season 0 "Test Run" (Solo UHC) ---
Why Minecraft UHC?
UHC is a challenge for even the most ardent commentator, and since we're starting out mainly with gaming collaborations (later moving on to other planned projects) - this is an excellent place for testing the mettle of our creators, as well as helping people develop their solo commentary skills. Future UHC events will be held with different rules.
Rules placed forth for Season 0?
- Last Man Standing, Solo UHC (No Teams)
- No killing people in the first episode
- No leaving the bedrock border.
- No Branch Mining
- Kill or be killed.
(episodes will be placed here as released by creator, they are scheduled to release Mon/Wed/Fri @ 2pm GMT - so none of them will show up before that time, this is to prevent spoilers)
