I've only been playing for a few weeks actually. I still have a looooong, long way to go until I'm part of the DF elite. I do feel like I'm learning a bit more about it every time I play though.
I am not sure that I will ever get enough time to become a part of DF elite.
Did you learn the game by playing or tutorials?
Did you know that some people actually play competitive DF (who will grow faster on the same map)?I think this is really good challenge for you if you feel confident enough with the game (I am not confident for this yet :()
I did not see a lot of changes which could bother me. It is really nice that the forum was rearranged, because it has grown a lot in past 2 years.
However finding a right section is little bit harder for me.
That's why.
And obtaining resources illegitimately is not the same thing as cheating.
I think you are both right.
It mostly depends on situation. If you build a beautiful house with using tmi and post it on the forum without saying that you did it without gathering the resources, it will be cheating. Another person who did same sized project with gathering resources should get more respect than the first one.
However in my opinion if you wrote that you used tmi, no one should call you a cheater, because you just skipped a boring for you part.
Some projects which I made needed a lot of time if gathered materials too, but it is boring for me. So I just made the game little bit less boring for me, and I could make bigger and more challenging architecture buildings.
It is almost impossible to make an enormous project in single player with gathering materials. If you will do so, the game will become a job (you will spend all your free time gathering resources). SO if you really want to create really big project and make it look like perfect, play with your friends on a server.
Those are passive mobs, not helpful mobs. Helpful mobs are Snow and Iron Golems, maybe even wolves and oceltots. Passive mob spawn rates are random, just look around.
Snow and iron golems are called that way because they are craftable!
Like I mentioned in the OP, I use Mayday's graphics.
I use tile sets on all games with ASCII graphics. It's easier to learn what everything is, compared to looking at colored letters and symbols. Plus, it makes it feel more like a classic NES game. I like to build my forts completely underground, preferably by digging into a hill. If the area is flat I build a depot on the surface and build a stairway going down. Later I wall in a path around the depot, with a bridge and traps and whatnot.
For how long are you playing DF?
I started playing 6-10 month ago and i still do not get almost everything
I will probably watch some more tutorials and try again)
Probably Call Of Duty is over rated. Before I bought MV3 it I played COD4 MV1 and i did not see a difference. Furthermore multiplayer is full of hackers with fake names on which you can't report. If I bought the game not on discount I could feel really bad about this purchase.
I have few strategies. Sometimes I just go and travel for few days until I find a very good place. More often I try to build small house and then start a shaft in a basement. Then I expand my house until it becomes a castle. Sometimes I use TMI, because it is very boring to collect a lot of useful resources, especially for railroads.
I tried to play with mods but most of them are interesting only for few days. I think the best mode is BuildCraft, because it makes auto mining possible.

Thanks, they just came to the fortress. I used Dwarf therapist, but they refuse to do anything. Probably it is good idea to lock them down.
