    Welcome to the Thread

Welcome to the discussion thread for Chisels & Bits (C&B) and Flat Colored Blocks (FCB).

First, if you have issues or ideas about the mods please refer to the issue tracks linked for each mod respectively this makes keeping track of ideas and issues much easier and if you create an issue you won't get lost in the shuffle.

Second, I don't intend on back-porting either mod to 1.7.10 or earlier so please do not ask.

With that said I hope that people will share their experiences and constructions with everyone, I'd love to hear what everyone has thought of using the mod so far as well as well as see some of the cool things that you have made. Feel free to share your creations and discuss the mod in general.

    Retirement

As of July 2019, I'm stepping away from these projects, read more on the github.

    Requirements

Both C&B and FCB both require Forge, the minimum required forge varies from build to build, I simply suggest using the latest recommended available for your version of MC.

    Chisels & Bits ( 1.8.9 / 1.9 / 1.9.4 / 1.10.2 / 1.11 )

This mod adds several chisels, a wrench and ways to copy designs and store bits. These tools enable you to create new custom decorative blocks and designs to decorate your bases and improve the flexibility of your building style.

    Flat Colored Blocks ( 1.8.9 / 1.9 / 1.9.4 / 1.10.2 / 1.11 )

A mod that generates a selection of simple colored blocks for use in building and creative projects. Highly configurable with settings to adjust number of hues, values, and saturation, as well as min/max ranges.

Last questions. If someone did add slopes and other shapes to chisel & bits and increased the bit count from 16 to say 2048 and rewrote Minecraft from the ground up, would it be possible to match or exceed games like Fallout, Battlefield, ect in terms of detail of shape and achieve a similair and stable framerate? Let's also assume that ram was not an issue as I'm sure it would be insanely high. I'm more interested in how much this would strain the cpu and/or gpu. Also what if the voxels were no longer destructible? Would that take a high amount of strain off the cpu?

If voxels are not destructible (which I assume makes them uneditable) it becomes nothing more then a model that can be pre-calculated ahead of time, which means that all cost can be calculated before the game is shipped, which is one of the reasons other games get better framerates, lack of dynamically generated content.

Of course its hardly minecraft anymore, its just another 3d engine.

I have just added this functionality to the Extra Bit manipulation addon for Chisels & Bits:

In addition to this page, information on Chiseled Armor can be obtained in-game by the following means:

    • Holding the control key while hovering the cursor over a Chiseled Armor itemstack will display usage information.
    • JEI will give basic information on how to import copies of blocks in-world into armor pieces.
    • Pressing the question mark button in the top right of the Chiseled Armor GUI will enter help mode, where all relevant objects will render detailed help text when hovering the cursor over them. (this is a particularly useful and expansive source of information about Chiseled Armor).

That looks really nice, pretty soon we're going to be swimming in fantastic armors as well as all this awesome architecture.

Ok I found the culprit. Removed Optifine and it was working. But now the question is... why would Optifine disable this effect? That is a shame. Now how to make it work while Optifine is there too , mhhhh. I tried playing around with Optifine, but no matter what I did, the fullbright glow of the bits didnt come back.... guess I have to post this into the bug tracker?

Optifine doesn't support the forge pipeline, which is required to do that effect, I was personally involved in the patches to forge that made it possible in fact. Its been reported to Optifine, however it appears to be an uphill battle.

You can read the details on these github issues:

    https://github.com/sp614x/optifine/issues/631

I would also recommend staying away from shady places like minecraft9, C&B can be found where I upload it here, https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/chisels-bits/files

Any word on when this will be updated to 1.12?

Soon, Flat Colored Blocks, Ambidextrious are already released for 1.12, and the the port for C&B is already done, but I need to test it before I release it. So sometime this week is quite likely.

    Epicdude

C&B is a client mod, he using Forge and i don't know server variants of this platform. Correct me, if i'm wrong.

Forge is a client and server side platform, and C&B works on both as well, To use C&B you must have forge + C&B installed on the server however.

I have an idea that the player uses C & B to make a model and then copy it with some given function of the paper. And then use this copy paper and the desired functional items on the workbench, such as the use of copy paper and furnace synthesis, when I put down the model with copy paper, he is a furnace, and call the furnace GUI.

All minecfaft functional items can be made, so that we have a variety of doors! All kinds of boxes! All kinds of torches and even lanterns, there are a variety of enchanting bookshelves! O (∩ _ ∩) O

I believe that this sort of thing would make the most since as an addon, or separate mod, Something like this could work, but it might also be very bug/crash prone depending on how it needs to be done, and I don't really have the time for such things right now.

That answers that. How optimized? Maximally.

Its been a while since I wrote the code for it. But I can't think of any cases off the top of my head that would resolve into cases with extra polygons, so it could very well be maximized. It does tend produce polygons that are longer, since the focus is on speed, and count, rather then count and surface area. A fair trade when the output is consumed only for rendering.

The method doesn't leave much room for error, and is optimized for speed with buckets based on face and distance and by extending the previous quad where applicable. This is done to minimize quad count early and then minimize search space for further merging.

    -

Addendum, Since posting I do see a few cases where it can generate sub maximized results based on directional. But I do stand by that the CPU saved in generation probably is worth the few extra polygons generated. Fully optimizing poly-count would probably be quite the cpu intensive process.

Modern GPUs make short work of polygons, especially since they are batched into VBO's and DisplayLists; Minecraft is almost always CPU limited unless the player sets their view distance too high in any-case.

    Ahhhhh,

My apologies I was using 13.8, I thought that was the latest as the link on the op downloads that version, that'll teach me to check next time.

Also quick question: when you remove 1 bit from the middle of the top of a block how does it render the block? Just curious so I know how much it will impact performance.

and thanks for a fantastic mod.

Removing one bit will produce 4 quads on the top, 5 for the inside, and the other faces of the cube will be unaffected, it won't look exactly like Phylogney's example, but the quad count is the same, 14 quads total for a top non-edge bit removed. ( Optimizing for Calculation speed rather then surface area )

I don't have a picture of that exact scenario, but here's one where I took out a large chunk randomly in single bit mode, you can see that it does a pretty good job at minimizing polygons.

As for collision, it uses a similar system but focuses on the cuboids instead, where as rendering focuses on quads.

I got a loading error with C&B for 1.11. A report is here.

    Already reported and fixed, https://github.com/AlgorithmX2/Chisels-and-Bits/issues/200

    New build here.
