posted a message on New User Posting Restrictions and Spam Reduction
Recently the forums has been under constant attack by a few dedicated spammers targeting the mods and server sections. The Minecraft Forum staff have been vigilant to flag and remove the spam as fast as possible. Along with that I have cooked up and installed a few anti-spam plugins.

New users are limited to 10 posts for the first 24 hours. As well, new users can only make one new topic every five minutes until they pass the ten post limit. This is intended to reduce the impact a spammer can have if they slip past the automated anti-spam service.

Our login and registration system now talks to Invision Power Service's free anti-spam service. This service automatically bans well known spammers before they even have a chance to make a single spam post.

There is also an automatic system in place to immediately unapprove any well known spam topics such as scams claiming to give away free Minecraft accounts. If you make a new topic and it does not immediately appear it was flagged by the anti-spam detector. A moderator will see your topic and review it before approval.

For more information and to leave feedback please visit this topic.

posted a message on Search highlight ruins pictures if their URL contains the keyword. Also most of the URLs here are ugly. (Failing SEO module?)
This looks like a bug with IP.Board's search system. There is nothing we specifically can do about it, but I will look around IPS' bug tracker to see if it is fixed in a newer version of the software.

posted a message on "OMG FREE GIFT CODE" spams strike again.
We have reported the spammer to the VPN/private server service they are using and continue to block any new IP address ranges the spammer is using. A solution is being put in place to filter this out.

posted a message on "Follow this topic" not working?
We found an existing bug report with IPS that describes half the problem.
    http://community.invisionpower.com/tracker/issue-36198-forum-digests-and-minimum-posts-to-view/page__gopid__137885#entry137885

A permissions issue with how the automated task fires causes the notifications not to be sent. This is slated to be fixed in a future release.

The second part of the issue is not being able to resubscribe or unsubscribe. We are looking into that.

posted a message on Higher Security for Registering?
We already have a system that helps to stop spam. However, this spammer is not a robot and being done by humans. Not even stopforumspam.com, which is usually very fast at catching spammers, has any of them listed. We are working on our end to create a filter set that will prevent them from getting through.

I have left topics on follow with my test account and even those large topics with many followers continue to send notification updates.

How many that are following topics use email notifications only?

Make sure you have "Auto follow topics I reply to." if you want to automatically follow and make sure you have notification list or email selected for notifications under that.

    Quote from Dimondium

    Haha, please.

Know what I'm doing after Spring Break.

My band class, as in the one I'm actually in, is largely non-bronies. Not jocks, but just non bronies. The entire band IN GENERAL are bronies...just not my class...

Anyways, I'm performing them the extended title theme, and showing some of my music. The whole class that day is nothing but that.

I only have like 2 friends to support me in there.

So, it's embarrassing to ask a person you may never see again for a pony. OK. Because it totally isn't embarrassing to have to play a song about colorful ponies, and show them songs you wrote about said ponies, to 90+ prepubescent, most likely biased teenagers.

...I'm sorry if I'm snapping. But ever since that whole 'Pre-winter break' snap quite a while ago, I don't know how this thing is gonna go. My nerves are frayed.

Should never be embarrassed ever about buying something you want. :D

It would be cool to put together a brony band. Though my flute is currently fixed with paper and tape.

Just picked up Rarity at McDonalds. Stands up on her own!

Though I got confused when they asked a meal for a boy or girl when I already said MLP. Stay delightfully sexist, McDonalds. :P

posted a message on What makes a topic "hot"?
    Quote from Sgt. Traveler

The 'Hot' tag is gone anyway, and is already replaced with lava buckets.

If their requirements are the same, if I'm not mistaken it took 20 replies before a topic has a 'Hot' badge (or in another case, 'lava bucket'.

The hot tag is still there actually. I just restored the missing lava buckets.(Code error in the templates that was not producing a logged error.)

    Quote from soydaniel96

The bar below the ads is horrible. Itadds extra time to the page load.
If you are so desperate for views, why not just plain ask people to constantly refresh the page every five minutes.

There is also the fact that the "users viewing forum/thread" thing is gone, the top bar being unnecesary, the formatting breaking, the change on the quick reply box, etc.

But you are probably going to ignore all negative things, just like Google, and only listen to those who praise it.

The Users Viewing Board/Forum/Topic features have been disabled for a while. However, we have a current version of the site on our development servers with those features turned on. It relies on an entirely new piece of software the was developed in the past month. We were not comfortable releasing it on to the site today with out further additional testing.
