posted a message on Suggestion, re. lightstone
After a huge exploration of the Nether and collecting the Lightstone i ended up with about 75 and so far i've crafted only 4 blocks, i'm going to hold onto the rest in case it is used for something later i wouldn't want to waste such a scarce resource.

I made a survey and have seen maybe 20-30 patches i could mine by creating some scaffolding.

If i mined it all i would end up with 60-70 lightstone blocks after maybe 3 or 4 hours of work.

Compare that to torches where 60 torches can be made for 15 coal and 15 sticks that can be harvested in a few minutes.

Obviously Lightstone blocks are the most expensive light source in the game by several orders of magnitude.

In my opinion the difficulty and scarcity should allow for Lightstone blocks to give off a massive radius of light, perhaps 20 blocks of monster free light.

This may sound Overpowered to some, but this is 70-100 blocks TOTAL for a 30mb map worth of Lightstone which makes it 100% impossible to spam. I may never in my time of playing minecraft have more than 100 blocks of lightstone unless i cheated with invedit.

You would have to be extremely careful where you place them and use them to light only your most valuable places, lighting mines would be a waste because you will eventually clear the mine of all resources and you cannot recover lightstone blocks.

I feel that this is an extremely important topic that needs a lot more attention.

Oprah is doing a show in January about players who stopped playing Minecraft i suggest you contact her and see about getting some air time.

Your story is important to the world, it must be told and the Minecraft forums simply isn't a large enough audience. this story should be told at a national level, perhaps even global.

posted a message on Nether stone for fuel/torches
That red stone burns therefore it should be used for fuel in furnaces and as a possible coal replacement for torches.

Because it is so abundent it should be crafted into a useable fuel like this:

    :Red: :Red: :Red:
    :Red: :Red: :Red: = :VV:
    :Red: :Red: :Red:

:Red: is the red stone from the Nether
:VV: is the new fuel source for torches and Furnaces.

Torches made with this material should be 1 or 2 blocks brighter, fuel should burn like coal.

posted a message on (poll) do you like the new spawn mechanic?
As said before in this thread.

    Peaceful = No mobs spawn
Easy = Mobs spawn in X light levels and below.
Normal = Mobs spawn in Y light levels and below.
Hard = Mobs spawn in Z light levels and below.

This would solve everything. The "hardcore" would have to place a torch on every single block to prevent spawns because to them that is fun and challenging, the normal folk would have pre-patch spawning, the easymode would only need a torch every 12 or so blocks.

I'm not cool with 1 torch every 3rd block.

Alternatively Notch could create a stronger light source that could be expensive but prevents mobs from spawning at a good distance for diamond mines.

    Personally i'd like some Nethertorches

    [] [] []
    [] :VV: []
    [] :|: []

Where :VV: is that red Nether block that never stops burning.

These torches would be twice as bright and never go out. Perfect for diamond mines.

posted a message on THEORY: Why Your Nether Portals Are "Glitched"
    CONFIRMED

I've fixed 4 portals using this method.

All 4 were broken, The Netherside Portals were misplaced due to walls. the return portals were between 30 and 200 blocks away from where i wanted them.

I mined out the nearby walls and placed new Netherside Portals where they would correlate with my normal side Portal.

    They all work perfectly now.

It isn't very complicated but it is annoying to have to fix each Portal manually.

Solution, force the portal into the proper spot. If portal is in a wall create a bubble of space, if over lava create a platform.

    This sounds awful...

I haven't been mining since the update, i suspect my bedrock level tree farm/Diamond mine is completely overrun with mobs right now.

    Quote from peronix »
No, there is nothing wrong with a portal being in a wall. A portal spawning elsewhere on the overworld is almost always caused by the netherworld portal spawning in the wrong area.

This pic summarizes the problem best:

So the solution is, determine based on positioning of the two respective overworld portals that the portal should have spawned over that lava, build a path out to said lava, and create a portal in the netherworld, which will hopefully link up with your base portal. If not, just look at where the new portal spawned and use its position to adjust the position of the portal in the netherworld.

I fixed my portals this way, that picture is perfect.

I got lucky and my portals were simply blocked by nearby walls.

I dug out a room in the Nether where my portal should have been created and when i built a portal and it linked to my original portal. I then destroyed the excess portals.

I now have 4 portals that work perfectly, no new portals are created, no exiting out of distant portals, they all work as advertised, it just takes some work to find out where your nether-side portal needs to be then build an island or dig a cave.

Thanks for the detailed explanation QuickShot, I kinda get whats going on now, but it still seems like a bug even if its how notch intended it to work currently. Maybe he had to rush the implementation for this release, but I really hope he works on improving it to work without all the evil math, so portals just appear where you expect them to, and link only to corresponding portals in the same position (+ the additional distance of course).

I was quite confused when I exited the nether in a 2nd portal far from my base, only to appear right inside my base, with a portal I haddnt even made, when I should have exited back to a 2nd portal on the surface.

I think that the portals should still appear, even if there is an obstacle in the way in the nether. This can be treated differently depending on the obstacle, the gate only has to do a quick check of where its spawning in the nether and act accordingly. For example:

    Your nether portal spawns:
    -In mid air
Solution: Generate a small amount of land below the portal (one block high extending +2 blocks around all sides of the portal to form a hovering platform.

    -In a lava lake
Solution: Generate a surrounding crust of obsidian or cobblestone around the portal, again something like +2 blocks all the way around. This will tell the player that their portal is somewhere dangerous, and the player will react how they feel is fit (by exiting and rebuilding the portal higher, or trying to dig out through the lava etc)

    -In a mountain
Solution: Generate a surrounding crust of obsidian or cobblestone around the portal, again something like +2 blocks all the way around. The player can then dig out and dig until they reach an opening. Perhaps the surrounding could be something different to the lava example, to help the player work out what the problem is

There the only 3 problem scenarios I could think of.

I fully support this solution, it was what i came here to say.

my portals always send me back to the original

from nether to real world- 100% works for me
from real world to nether- 100% works for me

a random 3rd portal WAS created in the real world in between the ONLY 2 portals that i made, and it goes to 1 or the other of the corresponding portals in the nether. Kinda wierd

You are lucky to have a working portal, i've place 3 portals in different places across my map and each time i enter them i come out somewhere else.

I'm now the proud owner of 5 or 6 unwanted portals in places i don't need portals...

Use cartographer to check your Diamond Ore count to make sure.

Most likely you just haven't found any yet.

I've found up to ~30-40 in an hour before, and i've also dug for hours and found 0.

    Random is random.

posted a message on What do you do with TNT?
    1. Dig a 4 block deep hole if hole is clear of ore place the TnT on the 3rd block like this.
***if you see Ore just dig it out as usual.

    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    [] [] :tnt: [] :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

    2. Now hit the TnT and cap the hole, like this.

    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: [] :tnt: [] :cobblestone:
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

    3. Continue with your 3x3x3 mining hole until you are rich with diamonds, gold, coal and iron.

I actually have over 170 diamonds right now using only this method.

    Proof it works:

Here is my diamond mine, it is so damn big from all the explosions i decided to clean it up and plant a forest.

posted a message on what are your thoughts on NPC villages [option maybe?]
I would like it if you designated places for specific jobs/citizens. You could craft certain blocks that would spawn certain NPCs

    for example:

Craft an Anvil out of iron blocks and place it inside a room. An NPC will spawn after X days within a few blocks of the anvil and will have the ability to repair your armor/tools in exchange for gold.

Craft a Stove/cooking pot. An NPC spawns after X days within a few blocks and will sell you food in exchange for gold.

Craft something for spawning Soldiers who patrol around and kill any hostile mobs.

That way you could settle the land and then create real cities.

if you could get your hands on 64tnt easily it would break the game as you would stop digging and just blast mine everything. getting 2 or 3 per game day is plenty as I save them up for engineering projects "I dont like that hill there, it spoils my view of the bay"....... BOOOOM!

So you are saying that grinding 2 or 3 tnt every twenty minutes (every game day is 20 minutes long) is fun or reasonable? Grinding is never fun. I like Minecraft because I can put an hour or two in every couple days and feel like I've made progress.

    MOB. TRAP.

The very fact that the only solution currently "use an exploit" is evidence of the problem in and of itself. I want a way to obtain items without feeling the need to exploit the game mechanics. I have no problem with mob traps: they're fun for mass production. But I don't feel players should be pigeon-holed into that style of game play just because they want to be able to use TNT a little more.

I'm not suggesting a dramatic change: simply that creepers drop at least one gunpowder with every non-detonated kill. That makes TNT 25% easier to obtain - not exactly game breaking. TNT is still rare. It just means that you only have to kill about 8 less creepers for every ten TNT.

Mob traps are not exploits, they are machines that are built within the rules of the game. Just like farms, automatic cactus farms, redwire computers, minecart tracks with boosters and other more complex devices.

You have set some imaginary rules about how complex of a machine is acceptable by your own rules that you invented. You have decided they are exploits and/or cheating not the game or the game creators.

If you don't like monster traps then don't expect the play with TnT without dozens of hours of creeper hunting.
