posted a message on WHATS IMPORTANT ABOUT THE NETHER??
    Quote from saintx »
The Nether is a huge resource and labor saver as well. Instead of digging a 1600 meter tunnel between two bases and burning through 600 iron ingots to make rail, as well as dozens of boosters along the tracks, I can now build rail lines in the Nether with 75 iron ingots to cover the same distance. Mining the nethercobble is much faster than mining cobblestone, so it's easier to dig through, as well. So, after a fashion, the Nether just saved me the equivalent of at least 525 iron.

    Exactly

I just laid down 5 stacks of rail in the Nether connecting my main portals. Now a 20 second rail ride gets me to the other side of my map which used to take 10 times as long and 10 times as much rail.

posted a message on All normal portals lead to the same nether portal?
    Quote from Rox »
It's basically the same phenomenon. Two overworld portals leading to the same Nether portal happens when there's not enough space in the spot where the Nether portal should spawn. So the game looks around and finds the closest available spot where a portal can be. Just so happens that spot is in the exact same place you already had a portal, so it connects to that.

This happens to me a lot, too. The part of the Nether directly underneath most of my world is a giant, mostly solid mountain with only a couple of tunnels large enough for a portal to appear. So wherever I make a portal on the overworld, it's pretty much guaranteed to connect to one of the ones I already have.

If you can figure out roughly where the new portal should be spawning, you can dig out a cave near that area, and the portal should appear there instead. But chances are it's just inside of a solid mountain, or above an enormous lava lake.

    Perfect explanation.

After fixing 5 portals i can confirm this is exactly what is happening and how to fix it.

posted a message on Obsidian should break faster.
It sucks when you have to break down 3 or 4 portals which takes about 15 minutes of just holding down the mouse button...

But instead of decreasing the mining time of obsidian they should just make portals break apart once you remove a single block. That way the random spawn portals wouldn't be such a mind bending waste of time and obsidian would keep its unique properties.

    to clarify...

    Portal

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

    Remove 1 Block.

    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] [] :obsidian:
    :obsidian: [] []
    :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian: :obsidian:

Portal falls to pieces, you pick them up off the ground.

This only work for activated portals, not all obsidian structures. Only the 14 blocks found in the portal would be mined.

posted a message on THEORY: Why Your Nether Portals Are "Glitched"
    Best methods imo...

    1. Link portals: If you create a portal on Earth it creates a permanently linked portal in the Nether at the nearest safe location. (This will keep the exact same safety protocols as we have now.) Entering the Nether portals will always bring you back to the Earth portal which created it and will never create a new portal unless the Earth portal has been destroyed or disabled.

    2. Safety bubble/platform: Creating a portal on Earth will force a Portal to be created in the exact corresponding location in the Nether.
    A. If there is a mountain in the way, the portal creates a safety bubble.
    B.
If there is a lava lake in the way, the portal is moved to the surface of the lake and creates a small platform.
    C.
If there is a lava fall in the way, remove the lava fall source block and delete the flowing lava from the nether.

I prefer method 2 because having portals created on massive lava lakes would be awesome. The only problem with Method 2 is lava falls, removing them would be ideal but may be hard to do, i have no idea...

Do all nether portals lead to somewhere else when you go back through them? I have two portals far away from each other which sucks.

This bug is know and happens mostly all of the time. Search the forums.
    Next update will fix it.

I have two portals and I've never had any problem with them.

    Luck.

Out of my 8 portals 5 needed to be fixed...

On the bright side i'm really good at fixing them now.

posted a message on portaling from main world as means of base-return
The 8:1 distance is a little deceptive.

When you travel for 30 minutes in the real world this is almost 4 minutes in the Nether.

4 minutes will quickly turn into 10 if you don't have a clear path.

    My advice (what i'm doing)

    1. Go into the Nether walk a certain distance that you find acceptable. To me this is no longer than 1 minute between Nether Portals.

    2. Return to Earth and get a feel for this distance, which should be about 8 minutes of direct walking.

    3. Try and place portals at the 8 minute marks along your journey, checking their location along the way to make sure they work to your liking (if it creates a second portal on the way back to Earth just destroy your first one and keep going, free obsidian.)

If you want a challenge try placing Earth portals every 15 minutes, if you think it is too hard place them every 3 to 6 minutes.

posted a message on Is it possible to accurately travel with portals?
Yes, I have 8 perfectly functional 2-way Portals.

My main 4 are even connected by rail in the nether for extra extra fast travel.

it wasn't easy, 5 of them needed to be fixed...

But now that i know how to fix them i can throw down a portal anywhere and have it working without glitches really fast.

    32x32 is perfect.

If his new pixel artist can come up with a nice 32x32 default i'd be happy.

If you hate the new one just make your own 16x16 original looking texture pack. Oh wait, that takes seconds to install, not everyone has seconds to waste dragging files around.

    I'm confused about this...

I haven't had any problems with portals. The first one I made near my spawn point linked me directly to the hell world, and when I went back, I came out the same portal. I made another one in hell, and I came back into the real world, spawning in a cave (right next to a skeleton dungeon... ow). When I went back through that portal, I came to the same spot in hell, and was able to travel back to my original portal.

It seems like everybody is saying that portals don't work for them... is there some specific case that makes the portals not work? Did I just get lucky with my portal in that it didn't spawn where other blocks already were? Or do the bugs only happen some of the time?

    You've been somewhat lucky.

    I've placed 8 Portals now.

5 of those Portals i had to fix.
3 of those Portals worked perfectly the first time.

Once you know how to fix them it is easy to do and should only take a few minutes per portal.

posted a message on Minecart Boosters dont work anymore?!
    I never liked boosters.

i created a ton of them and spent hours perfecting a massive series of boosters to get around my world.

In the end after it was all done i looked at my tracks and they looked like complete crap, i had to build structures to hide the boosters so animals and mobs wouldn't turn them off. I had to create those ugly dips that made my bridges look silly.

In the end i went with Autocart, it expanded my territory by leaps and bounds, cleaned up my buildings and took the ugliness out of my system.

I just wish Notch would find someway to give us a legit way of having autocart quality mine cart tracks, booster tracks, steam engines, i don't care just give something besides those ugly, clunky, physics-breaking booster tracks.

posted a message on *cry* Uwaa... Mobs are being MEANIES!? Whyy?
If Lanterns currently existed or if they were officially announced to be the solution then your thread would be appropriate.

You make an assumption that Lanterns will fix the problem but there is no official release date for Lanterns and Notch said he didn't like the new spawn system.

Much more likely is that the 1 torch per 3 blocks needed for safety will be changed before lanterns are released.

If Lanterns are the only way to safely mine for Diamonds then this change should probably be put off until lanterns are actually in the game.

    Complaints will continue.
