I've been playing minecraft for a little more than a week now. I was digging around looking for some lava so i could try to make an obsidian generator. I eventually find some right next to water. Underneath the water is about 12 blocks of obsidian. I get that out, and try to direct the water to get the rest of the lava. Some of the obsidian mined fell into lava, but i ended up with about 20+ blocks of obsidian from it.
Does naturally occurring obsidian happen very often? How much death will i die of when i make my portal?
Naturally occurring obsidian is rare in the worlds I've been in, I usually need to farm it, but it varies for everyone who plays, as everything is thankfully random. Water coming over the top of lava just hasn't happened that much for me.

Ghasts can't destroy hellrock without a straight hit. They get through dirt too. Anything above that they can NOT destroy - cobblestone, smooth stone and so on. Wood would probably survive the blast, but it isn't a very good idea due to fire hazard :tongue.gif:
Actually a lot of people say they can get through cobblestone, I have never had a direct hit on a cobblestone myself so I couldn't tell you for sure. The portal I have is reinforced with obsidian walls :smile.gif:, and a cave dug out of their reach.
Ghast can not destroy cobblestone or stronger blocks.
This is my main portal, i had to dig this room out of a mountain.
There is a simple logic behind the problems.
I've experienced every problem from random portals manifesting across my world, distant portals linking up, far away portals linking to the same Nether portal, new portals created when leaving the Nether, being dumped into random caves, etc etc...
All portals can be fixed.
Once you understand the topography of your Nether you can place a portal anywhere you want in the normal world and get a perfectly placed Portal in the Nether.
This was a tough one. After calculating that the location of my normal world portal i found that it was approximately 120 blocks north and 104 blocks east in the normal world so i had to create a platform 15 blocks north and 13 blocks east in the Nether.
This is my next massive project.
This lava lake is hundreds of meters in every direction.
That means there are thousands and thousands of meters of difficult to portal land in the normal world.
So i'm being proactive, i'm building a massive platform that hangs from the ceiling and will hold my nether portals.
Now that i understand the Nether and how to place any portal i want and have them work with 100% accuracy i LOVE the Nether, it is simply awesome.
Ghast fire balls CAN destroy. And yes what texture pack is that? I love it! :smile.gif:
*edit: I suppose I read wrong. So they do destroy blocks, but i'm not sure which ones they do/don't destroy.
Mixcraft HD texture pack. And i changed the Nether to red stone and red sponges, i haven't liked any Nether textures yet.
Ghast can destroy the Nether blocks, Glass and rail.
They can not destroy Cobblestone.
They can not see through a half step so those half step window/walls are ghast proof.
I am quitting for a while, i need to keep my grades up.
I'm posting this in case anyone is interested in my world. It was built slowly without any cheats/mods except Autocart and texture packs.
I can't show everything but here are a few shots from around the world.
Hell has been tamed to a degree, covered rail networks allow for Ghast free travel within the world.
The collection room of my mob trap tower.
Here is my former workshop/town.
My main base is carved inside an island with a wooden temple on top. At night you can really see the below water level Portal/Rail room. (This is an old pic before i put in a portal.)
- A massive mine cart track network. Both the Normal world and the Nether have tracks laid down that lead to some of the key locations. Warning: i used Autocart so if you prefer boosters you will need to build them.
- 80+ blocks of Gold
- 70+ blocks of iron
- 150+ diamonds
- 500+ brick
- 7- 8 perfectly functioning Portals.
- Hand crafted island in the sky with buildings, dungeon and water fall ladder
- 2,500 drops per hour mob trap.
- Good Nether with massive open spaces, huge lava lakes, paved cobblestone roads and covered glass/cobblestone minecart tracks.
If anyone likes the style of my world and wants an epic starting world you can pick up where i left off and keep it going.
I need underground sunlight for my project and I can't lay torches everywhere, otherwise it looks ugly. If a great modder could make this, then they take FULL credit and all I do is take it and say "Thanks".
If nobody makes this, then thanks anyway.
It would seem that ghasts dont have very smart AI I have witnessed sevral of the beasts "drowning" in the sea of lava from a small cape i found
This is just how ghast reproduce.
What you are witnessing is the cycle of life.
The female Ghast suicides into the lava to lay her eggs and the male Ghast suicides into lava Falls to fertilize the entire lava pool.
The fertilized lava pool is the nursery of baby ghasts and when they grow to adult hood they lose their immunity to lava and are forced into the Nether and begin instinctively looking for unfertilized lava pools to start the Ghast cycle all over again.

I have no idea how to make mods, i just wanted to the get the idea out and hope someone makes it.
I just photoshopped the picture to show exactly what Minecraft desperately needs.

If you press TAKE ALL it picks up as much as possible from the chest.
If you press the little squares to the left of the chest it takes that entire row.
If you press the little squares to the left of your inventory it dumps everything on that row into the chest.

Beautiful, do they all link to the same portal in the Nether or is it 4 separate portals?

Or implement this:

You punch it and it moves.

Thanks!
I'm glad you like it I've spent far too much time creating it.
