posted a message on Seeking staff for a diverse server

Hello, my name is Mouse and I am looking for staff members to help moderate a server for Minecraft. This is going to be an ongoing thread, and I will be sending out and accepting applications at my discretion.

I am seeking to create a server that is made to be a comfortable place to play for disenfranchised groups of people such as (but not limited to) racial minorities, women and LGBTQ+. The server is a 1.10 SMP server that is mostly vanilla, with a simple /home /spawn mod and bukkit core protect. It's an 8gb server with ddos protection and whitelist only. It is mostly a build-focused server, and I have been maintaining it for personal use between a small group of friends, occasionally opening it to the public, for years.

Because of the goals of this server, and the fact that this is a server that myself and some of my close IRL friends play on, I am going to be extremely particular about the social problem solving skills of my staff. Beyond that, the only requirements is that you play minecraft regularly and commit to taking action due to rules violations. You will have access to only /ban and /kick commands and will simply be in charge of removing players who are griefing and/or violating community standards, and then messaging me a report on the behavior. I will be preforming rollbacks myself. It's a very non-technical job but people skills are key.

If you are interested in playing on the server or being a staff member, please feel free to post here or private message me and I will send you an application to fill out through PM. Please note that the staff application may have some more personal questions on it about your experiences handling tense situations.

    Thanks for your interest!

posted a message on Villager Heredity: Never confuse villagers again!

"The answer is: You, and nobody else."

Sorry, sugar cube. Innaccurate to say the least. :) I'm just the only one to refuse to be bullied off the thread by the OP or their antagonists. Sounds like you're a little butthurt there. Need some aloe gel?

    Page 1:
"There are two things that bother me though. Having facial hair on the villagers takes away that they are gender less. (I would love there be girl and boy villagers but Mojang wouldn't likely do that as everything else is gender less.)"

    Page 2:

"But we don't need the facial hair, sure it's possible [/i]for a woman to have facial hair but I think it's best to leave the facial hair out."

"I like the overall idea of diversity, but going too far, like into adding genders could cause some probably, and I don't think is a good idea."

    Page 3:
"About the only problem is that the facial hair undermines the concept of them being gender neutral, and adding female Villagers wouldn't be a good idea."

"The only issue I have is that it kind of hurts the androgyny of the villagers, which is present in just about every mob in the game including themselves. Mojang seem quite strictly against giving mobs genders, and these villagers seem very masculine for the most part."

"Besides, this adds a whole bunch of implications of race and gender which Mojang was specifically avoiding."

"Having a girl skin that does nothing to change how the game works is different than having breed-able mobs having genders."

    Page 4:
"Although, I have to say I agree with the "no gender in minecraft" argument. To solve that, why not have a bit more diversity in head hair and a bit less in facial hair?"

"I'm in agreement with most everyone here, the idea is really good except for the facial hair."

"Drop the texture variants that aren't sufficiently gender-neutral. "Some males (respectively, females) have that feature which is typically female (respectively, male), so it's all a-o-kay!" just doesn't cut it as an excuse."

Should I go on? Those are all quotes from different people.

Yet somehow these villagers HAD eyelashes but, like 2 whole people thought they were silly and they got pulled for being "too controversial" (OPs words). How are eyelashes controversial but not BEARDS? Eyelashes are barely even vaguely gender specific, but not as controversial as facial hair? How does this not smack of a gender bias to people? :/

posted a message on New passive mobs, mob categories (carnivore, herbivore, etc.)

Yeah, two people talking on the same account is confusing at best and seems disingenuous at worst. (It has the potential for saying things like "It's not ME on my account that's being salty I promise! It's someone ELSE." when it's really just an outlet for one person to be salty.) I can't even know for sure if you're two people. On the internet nobody knows you're a horse lime. So all *I* can see is that THIS account is posting this stuff. There's no differentiation between your posts IMO, and if you want there to be he should get his own account. So my posts are to the account WDSMinecraft, because similarly people's opinions of WDSMinecraft's behavior will apply to this account no matter who is at the other end... Including for things like moderator actions, etc. If your brother is in charge of the thread and you insist on it being him, not you, posting poorly then maybe you should leave the thread as his so there's only one person maintaining it, rather than answering for him.

"Next, I am pretty sure all the hating stuff has been cleared up as someone else (Endergirl00) already commented and pointed out that stuff, and we have not saying anything about hating ever since. Next, if I am going to make another suggestion, wouldn't I save everything up till I post my suggestion? My brother was just putting it out there to give you guys a hint on what is to come. Me? I am just answering the questions about the mobs in the suggestion and clearing up stuff since my brother hasn't really said anything on this thread for a while"

Yeah, she did point it out. But it was just one post before you "stopped" that you insulted people telling them to "think before they comment again", as if we were just posting mindlessly or were stupid or posting only knee jerk flaming reactions. That's pretty salty IMO. It's not OK to insult the people giving you thoughtful critique.

I was also pointing it out and suggesting that the guide be read because you should be reading it. If you're making every mistake in the book maybe read the book.

If you are going to make a series of suggestions related to one feature, no, you should NOT save it all up (for later). Or rather, YES you SHOULD save it all up, to make one info-filled concise post that ties it all together, not dance around the subject for multiple pages making it up as you go, chaining ideas together until they make sense three+ pages into the thread. We don't care about "a hint" we care about trying to see if it's a good suggestion or not. Nobody is going to be "oh please oh please tell us more about this vague idea from some random stranger on the internet! I am waiting on baited breath for more info!". If you're not going to give us all the info at once and how it relates, don't post it. If it doesn't make any sense without other suggestions tied in, we are going to tell you it's dumb. If you don't post it all at once, we don't care if there's more LATER, it's dumb NOW... And you should be posting it all at once if you want us to think otherwise. "I'll tell you later" is a poor excuse and goes against the goals of the forum which is to present well thought out, fleshed-out and developed ideas for critiquing.

Which is reason #2 I referred you to the guide. Because the guide TELLS you all this in advance before you post because these are common mistakes that are really annoying and can be avoided.

And maybe if the OP isn't posting and doesn't want to, you should let it go. How do we even know that what you're posting are "his" ideas and not "yours" and they're unrelated? It's not up to you to answer "his" thread.

So yeah.. All my points still stand. Just read the guide before you post, and flesh out your ideas thoroughly before you post them. And don't be salt just because people don't like them or call you out for making textbook mistakes.

Dolphins sound really intriguing. Maybe they could dive and surface quickly if tamed and ridden, unlike a boat. You could use the space bar to rise and surface to breathe or jump, just like while swimming. Essentially, I could see the dolphin being like a submarine type of use, but with air loss still being a serious risk. They'd probably spawn in small packs like wolves. Maybe if you're not riding a dolphin, they will attack hostile mobs in the water with the same sort of AI a wolf has on land. Or maybe they hunt squids for funsies the way wolves hunt sheep. Dolphins could be really cool as ridable wolves of the sea. They'd make underwater exploration much more dynamic and open up a lot of design space in ocean/deep ocean biomes.

Birds? Why? Each bird type would need a different use and different taming AI. This seems like a lot of work to code several individual uses and AIs to me, but what do I know about coding. (Not much tbh.) Falcons strike me as useful for hunting with. They could hunt fish, rabbits, chickens or ocelots for you. These would be a falcon's natural prey sources that exist within minecraft, rabbits being the most appropriate... But it just seems too loose. Parrots can talk, maybe they could say a message? What possible use could other birds have? Feathers? I have no idea what you're proposing with this.

Similarly I'm not sure why tigers, lions and bears (oh my)? I'm all for new animals but I think they need to DO something. It might be kinda cool to think of new mobs, but this is so unclear. Why? Why these mobs? Why not foosas and elephants and monkeys instead? None of these serve a purpose in the game until a purpose is made for them. Wolves hunt zomb and skelles, cats chase off creepers, cows have milk and leather, rabbits drop rabbit feet and craft into one of the best foods in the game, horses can be ridden, pigs drop pork chops and spawn everywhere, chickens are portable and you only need one and have feathers, sheep can be dyed and have wool.

I think the only idea here that holds it's water (ha) is the dolphin.

So support for a cool dolphin, no support otherwise.

You're right of course. How dare I be polite on the internet and desire the ability to control who I share something I spend money on with. :) Shame on me.

Thank you for validating my denial of your application, and for validating why we don't allow people with poor applications on the server. I love it when people freak out over being denied. It really makes me feel justified in denying them and the policies I implement to keep bad players out. :) <3
Since I work from home I find it best to have one staff member online as often as possible, even if nothing is happening on the server or I'm not actually playing just to keep an eye out. Active staff is important in vanilla.
    Best of luck.
