It's not the pistons blocking it though. The piston simply moves the stone blocking it.

Well as of now, they're not even growing, but it takes awhile.

I have glowstone hidden by a retracting stone right next to the mushrooms. However they don't seem to break off? Is it better to use water?

And yes, the Downloadable version is the one your looking for. However, I believe it comes with both too.

Another thing though, if he really likes Minecraft, look into Colbalt. It's almost like a robotic version from my knowledge except more advanced with guns (not graphic however) and futuristic technology. This is also by Mojang, however it's only in alpha so it's not close to complete, but it's a lot cheaper!
