When I patched to allow HD texture packs, the sound is disabled in game and needs a deletion of minecraft, java, and a restart of your computer. After that, I had to reinstall java, minecraft, and go without an HD texture pack. Might be something you want to look into.
I tested this multiple times and it took me quite awhile to figure out this was the issue. I did not put any mods on my minecraft before patching, this is purely the patchers side of things.
The poll is up! Vote now on what you think! Personally I think it would be a nice quality of life change and would make sense and help with immersion in the world.
Edit: Updated the poll to reflect some of the responses. I never saw Notch's post on dynamic lighting but I still think that something like this whether it is a torch, lantern, lamp etc. would be a nice idea.

Why do you wanna join?: Looking to expand my minecraft experience. You can only build so much until you want to try something new and the idea of joining a RP server of a prison sounds really fun.
Describe in your own words, what all possibilities do you have when you join the server? In minecraft I believe the possibilities are endless. I will follow the rules and play the game within those boundaries. Prison breaks sound fun too though eh...BUSTED!
