What is Oasis?
Well, it's a public survival server created for the purpose of surviving. Everything that has been built, or is built, was made by materials players originally got. Even the admins play the game! The server is griefer protected, but comes with a large chunk of rules.



Rules:
> Absolutely no griefing allowed.
> There are no acceptions to any use of hacking, or using a modded api.
> There is no PvP unless given permission in a designated area.
> If you're reading this now add a Porkchop image in your application.
> Fill in any creeper holes.
> Do not mess with any npc villages.
> If you happen to cut down a tree, CUT IT DOWN FULLY, and replant.
> Be a good neighbor and have a nice time!

Two things I keep hearing players talk about: Giving more use to the villagers, and a lot of ideas to produce overpowered slave golems for fighting, harvesting, etcetera. So...Why not combine the two? Make villagers do things for you. Other games have incorporated relationship mechanics: Why not Minecraft? Plus it'd give some purpose to the "professions" beyond informed attributes and different colors. The idea: You help the villagers, they help you. You screw with the villagers, their golems pummel your insensitive ass into a blocky pulp.

Relations won't just be built up forever, they'll degrade (slowly) over time unless you keep working at it. Destroying pieces of the village or killing villagers would drastically damage relations with all professions. That aside, there would be varying ways to help/hinder villager relations depending on the profession of the villager you interact with:


Farmer: To boost relations, plant crops in the village. When harvest time comes, you get a share. Alternatively, stealing or ruining (trampling, burning, etcetera) crops lowers relations and farmers would attack you with hoes and shovels instead of offering crops.

Librarian: To boost relations, craft bookshelves in the village. Not sure what they could offer in return but maybe a tiny amount of EXP? Or in rare cases, a random low-level enchantment (since enchantment tables use books). Destroying books/shelves, using potions or fighting things within a given radius of this guy should hinder relations.

Priest: To boost relations, build brewing stands in the village or breed animals in the village. In return, you can come to the priest for free healing and (rare occasions) random potion benefits. **** him off via enchanting, using dead ingredients (spider eyes, rotten flesh, etc.) around him, or fighting, he'll launch fire charges at you.

Blacksmith: To boost relations, build more furnaces in his shop or kill mobs near him. To lower them...I'm at a loss for this one. Any ideas? His benefit would be providing weapons and armor and maybe repairing armor as well. Rare occasions he might provide a random piece of diamond equipment.

Butcher: Boost relations by bringing him raw meat or killing animals in a given radius. Drop them by farming or feeding on non-meat items. His benefit will be providing cooked meat for you, saving you time and furnace fuel. Rare occasions may auto-fill the hunger bar.




I tried to figure out semi-logical methods for each profession.


Farmer: Obviously, helping him farm boosts things. Destroying his crops angers him. Simple.

Librarian: Building libraries helps for obvious reasons. For the negatives, libraries tend to be peaceful so fighting = bad. And libraries are associated with books. Books associated with knowledge, knowledge with intellectuals. Intellectuals wouldn't much buy into silly potion-making nonsense.


Priest = religion. For the boosting: Religion values life (breeding) and many utilize ingestible mixtures (brewing) to induce religious experiences. For the negative methods: Enchanting (sorcery) is heresy, using the dead is sacrilege, fighting is...Well, fighting. "Thou shalt not kill" and such.

Blacksmith: Building more furnaces for his business helps for obvious reasons. As a blacksmith, he's probably into combat, so seeing you fight things would make him prefer you. Haven't thought of negative methods yet.

Butcher: Bringing him meat to work with or helping out by butchering animals = good. Farming or non-meat diets (both hurt his business) = bad. Simple.



That all adds a nice use for villagers and incentive to build up the villages too. Good RPG-ish element, I think, for people into that sort of thing.





Now to the armies so many seem to want in overpowered slave golems: Getting low enough relations with any one profession (or a combination of any) will set them and their golems into an attack-on-sight kind of mode. But getting high enough relations with any one or a combination of them will enable you to enlist that respective profession of villager as a sort of follower. Each profession would battle differently:


- Farmers would have no armor and fight with hoes as weapons. If the hoes break, they'll use fists until new crafting materials are obtained. (When not fighting, they can be given seeds and tools to plant/harvest crops)

- Librarians wouldn't fight but mobs killed with them nearby (radius effect) would drop extra EXP.

- Priests would have no armor and wouldn't fight. They would heal and (rarely) bestow random low-level temporary potion benefits upon the player in battle.

- Blacksmith would use whatever armor and sword you give them. Simple. If armor or sword breaks, they will fall back and use a bow-and-arrow (automatically given with one full arrow stack, same shooting mechanics as when the player uses one) unless new equipment is crafted and given to them. All villagers would run from creepers except the blacksmith, who will attempt to shoot it dead with arrows. (When not fighting, they can help you mine, if you give them a pick)

- Butchers would wear leather armor and fight with axes. If the axe breaks, they'll continue with fists. (When not fighting, they can be set to work killing animals for meat, with or without a weapon)
