Minecraft does not equal the real world. Notch probably likes obsidian, and obsidian is pretty easy to make with a bucket of water. i think notch wants us to actually work to get to the nether, and be able to exit it using a new portal. Just saying. if obsidian is easy to mine like glass, then nether portals will be made with something else, that makes everyone rage over the new thing.
The creeper mud is good for two things. one is making all enemies low enough for any block of lava to hurt them without them falling in lava directly, and making one way paths, for all mobs the same size as the player, and you yourself.
The one way path seems to be evident, so you're trying to get creepers and skellies to have only one choice, and that's to go into the mud and into the trap.
The one way path is as diagramed (the 1/2 step will be creeper mud)

Just put the hell mud on the side that you want them to stay stuck in. you can use about anything to replace grass that is one normal block. Important to remember- do not put any blocks where the glass block is- the glass block is not to be placed.
. if you do, the one way path will break, and any mob can go through both ways
Brittle Gold has the brightness level of the Sun, within one square of it. But how it's designed is a little cruel. You need to mine like 9 of them, to make one whole block. and most clusters are 18 peices, and high above you. I tend to use dirt to make an pillar to get to the brittle gold, at least if i'm sure i won't be bothered by ghasts. if ghasts are a problem, i'll just use cobble, but it'll be harder to get rid of it later.
It is easy to spot, i'll give it that, but it's hard to get and mine. without using a pillar to get there. I think it's designed that way because Notch may have planned for Brittle gold to be able to burn Zombies and Skellies, although i'm not sure if it can do that. Notch may probably program it so Brightness level of whatever the sun and Brittle Gold is, will kill all zombies and skelletons exposed to it. Just saying. i"m not sure if it does that allready or if it may do that eventually.
When i was building my tower, i found this out. i was like, " oh, great. the stairs are broken." Then i realized that if i face that direction, the stairs will go in that path. much better than before, and the random annoying auto-fix, thinking the worst angle possible is the best. I had no idea this fix was in though.
You could try setting TNT near some sand, so if someone were to trip a pressure plate, it'd break a torch and cause the sand it supports to fall, somewhat like the diagram. Just suffocate the robber with tons of sand above, instead of the one sand in the diagram. could be gravel instead though. your pick.

The 1/2 step would the the pressure plate, and the mushrooms the redstone circut- which will eventually go to TNT at some point
The only reason why Ghast are annoying is how they have a tendacy to gang up on you. the last two times i entered the Nether, i was eventually attacked by one ghast, then the others started spawning in the nearby area, and immedeatly noticing and attacking me. The first time, i was against like 10 ghasts with some zombie pigmen wandering near me, and attacking the ghasts. The area looked like an batlefeild afterwards.
If a wall is that steep and smooth, it's going to be a chunk error, or an manmade structure. There isn't much other explanation for it, and it's rather too large for it to be manmade, so it's an chunk error, like everyone else says.
I think the best use for slime balls are to make them a sort of green dye, or to make a spring block, that increases your char's jump to three squares high instead of the usual one. The green dye is the most likely one to happen though...
