Another method is placing sand blocks on top of lava or water, which will raise a lava or water block to the same place as where you placed the sand block. Be careful when raising lava, I once made a lava tower and some lava spilled out causing the lava blocks to spread rapidly in the air and create huge lag. Fortunately this was on a single-player map, and you should always ask the server admin if its okay to build with lava on his map.
Interesting. I can see keeping this out of multiplayer, for obvious reasons, but why does it work in single-player?
The depressing song would be excellent for when in a cave underground. That's what I've always imagined it as.
The first time I heard the music was when I dug straight down and stumbled upon a cavern system. The timing of the music kicking in and the mood that it set were just too perfect; I thought for a moment that it was a scripted event of some sort.
You can double your palette when making pixel art on the ground (as opposed to standing vertically). Place solid blocks (anything except glass or leaves) up in the sky to shade the blocks and get a darker hue.
I don't really care about a skin builder, but I do think the way skins are UV mapped onto the model should be changed a bit. At the least, the arms (and I think the legs are affected too) should mirror each other. As it is, you can't really make a skin with inner arm/outer arm differences, because doing it for one arm will have it reversed on the other.
