CREATING YOUR OWN MINECRAFT SERVER
Hey guys!
I've been an owner of quite some time now, and through my experiences, I wanted to give anyone starting a new server some good tips.
First of all, I'd like to say, owning a server is not easy. Running a server means you create the community, you manage it. When people need to ask someone for advice, they come to you. And if you have got staff, you are still teaching staff what to say. If you want your server to become huge and successful, you need to understand that you are responsible for a big community.
---(Sorry Staff, I knew the "Servers" Categories was full of simultaneous bump ups for servers)---
CONTENTS:
HOSTING - Choosing the right host for you
SETTING UP - What server you want, and how you should plan
ADVERTISING - How you should be advertising, importance of advertising, different advertising methods
DONATIONS - What provides for your server, what the purpose might be for your server, not getting too greedy
HOSTINGYou might think that it's easy to choose a minecraft hosting site! It actually requires a lot of consideration. There are two main things to choose from when selecting, almost any product/service.
A battle between PRICE and QUALITY
If you are a beginner at FTP Files, Server Console, Backups, Subdomains, etc. It is best to have quality on your side. Quality is the service you get. That will be how much staff will be willing to help out, or a minimal times of maintenance, and obviously the lag you get on your server.
I know that MCPROHOSTING has the best quality by far. With live help chat, absolutely no lag, and an easy to use control panel
https://mcprohosting.com/
However, that comes in return for a fairly costly monthly bill.
If you are a pro at what you do. You are familiar with server managing, etc. The best choice is to try to find a cheap server that charges less for the monthly bill. It will get you what you need and get it to you cheap.
The importance of the right host increases at the rate of how long you want your server running. It's not smart to say that, uhhhhh, a $7 difference per month? Same thing. If you plan on running your server for at least 2 years, than
your $7 monthly difference will become $128. A lot more!
SETTING UPI believe that this is the most crucial part of setting your server up. I also believe this is where most owners ruin their server, including myself.
What is the purpose of your server? Your server's purpose may be solely to make money, or to be able to watch your own community grow. Either way, both these goals have a rough start, if the server is not prepared.
You need to choose what type of server you want. learn about the different server types online, or even better, info provided from your hosting site. If you want a factions server, what do I need to do? If I want a custom modded server, what do I need to do?
Trust me, this is the easy part.
Next, comes what I like to call, the "Doomsday Zone"
When you've got your server pretty much set up, just with lots of bugs, and you have decent spawn. You might be saying, "Why not? A few players could join"
And what happens is, people start joining pre-maturely on the server. This is horrible! I'll tell you why. You will need to fix bugs, but it will risk the few players on your server's experience. You will need maintenance and all sorts of things while your players are online. And you will slow down the pace of work you get done because you tend to the help people ask for on your server. People leave because they decide they are interrupted to much and you will start to become depressed. You will also think that your server is never going to be finished.
To prevent this, you NEED to whitelist your server. I know it sounds strange to not give your server's community a head start, but it is the wisest thing to do in the end.
STAFF are a very crucial part of creating your server.
From choosing staff, to properly assigning them, staff are really important.
Never ever write down "-Looking for staff" anywhere. You should not have even advertised yet. First, choose how many staff you need.
I found it easy to have these staff:
3 Admins
5 Moderators
2 Builders
1 Developer
The reason I think it is necessary to have this many staff is because it will speed the work up on the server.
Builders:
I do not mean to have all the builders work at the same time to build your empire. Having two builders, you do not have to strain them to work too long or too much. When you choose builders, I recommend you go to planetminecraft and choose a builder that you think will personally fit what you have in mind for your server. I also think it is smart to choose someone who doesn't ask to be staff. So private message a builder on planetminecraft with something like this.
{Hi! I've seen some of your amazing work! I am currently planning on creating a minecraft server. I plan on thoroughly working with builders for a periods of time on occasions or by request. If you want to take part in my minecraft server as a titled staff, please respond with an answer. Thank you}
Developer:
(Same thing as a Builder, however a developer will be much harder to find)
Admin:
Please do not accept an application for admin for a person who just joined the server. Many people first join the server. They do not even know what kind of server! And they will ask if they can become an admin. Anyone could sketch up an application in 2 minutes!
The staff you are looking for:
-Never ask to be staff
-Humbly ask for a whitelist understanding the policy of the server's state of development
-Go on the server very frequently
-Have knowledge of how your server's system works
If you have a player like this, I can guarantee that this person will do a good job as an admin. Young or old, if a person has these traits, they are worthy of being staff. Why is the method of finding an admin so difficult? Well, it's because you don't really need an admin yet. Not until you are done setting up your server.
Moderator:
I like to think of Moderator very similarly to an admin, but maybe it could be a stepping stone to admin if you want to have them gain your trust
Correct me on this if you disagree.
To sum off setting up your server, you need to be patient and finish your server before introducing players on. I would even set up a goal date for when you want your server to be released. And we are talking from half an year up to one year for everything to be securely finished.
Choosing staff, you must be very careful. I think I was too soft when choosing staff for my server, and I felt really bad in the long run when I demoted them when it wasn't their fault.
ADVERTISINGAdvertising is very difficult. Unlike setting up, it is not a couple of decisions, but advertising really requires you to compromise and control the situation. I might start to sound very picky and competitive, but hey, welcome to the real world.
If you want your server to be seen a lot, find a site that would be seen a lot!
minecraftservers.org, etc. They are all great sites to post your server on.
You will need to have a professional banner for your server, as well as a good website. I, myself am good at commercially creating graphic designs, and I had no real need of hiring someone, but I know that investing money is very important. Think- would you click the server with the blazing, eye-catching, moving banner introducing the server, or a banner from a template that is static? If you tell me, I would definitely go for the bright one. And hey, wouldn't everyone else who sees your server? Just because your server is seen, does not guarantee them choosing it.
A website? Yeah! A website! You will think, nah, I've already got a serve to manage, and besides, no one will use the website. It's just a waste of money
That is so wrong. This is under advertising for a reason.
Look at hypixel. their website is stirred up with conversations about the server, not about the server, and those who are part of this community, just want to play on the server more!
I was looking for an answer on armor stands the other day, and it led me to the hypixel website. I found the answer and I applied the information I knew, but just looking at their website logo "Hypixel" Just made me want to play on hypixel for the day!!!
It is important, for sure
Voting:
Yeah, everyone also does not think this is important. You are at the bottom of the list on minecraftservers.org. But why bother? There are so many servers, that no matter how many votes we get, we won't be seen! That might be true, but not only does it encourage people on your server to vote to get rewards, there is a huge gap of servers who have 0-50 votes. After about a hundred votes, you're already on the 10th page of the server list!
DONATIONSYes. It finally comes down to donations. I'm not putting this here just to say it will make you a profit. No, no, I understand that it is your opinion if minecraft earns you money or joy, but in the end... you need money to keep running the server. It's not a good idea to overly advertise your players to buy ranks.
Properly baiting players on giving donations is giving your default players pretty good stuff!!!!! But the things that attract players to buy better ranks isn't just a better kit for survival, but what attracts them is having something that others don't have.
If you have this rank, you get particle effects!!! You earn experience twice as fast!!! These are the sort of things that players want. Players can deal with starting survival without enchanted diamond armor. It is not an effective rank to put up.
And remember not to be afraid to invest. If you really have a hope for your server to become big, you should be looking forward to taking money out of your wallet instead of putting them in.
Best of luck creating your own server. I hope my guide has helped. If you want further help, instead of asking me down messaging, private message me

Hey! This is an RPG castle I was building/built for an RPG server... not much use for it now so I figured I would share. It's pretty big, it is also built into a cave
Here's a link if anyone wants it (its a .schematic file so you'll need world edit )

So relieved this wasn't totally abandoned
One of the most useful mods I used! Thanks a ton!

I would drive down the street and see the slums of dirt huts with doors created by the kids and bad builders.

"Annoying People"
aka 50% of the MC community...
Not so much MCF users, but I think everyone knows who I'm talking about...
1
Ah, I see. Would that not come down to the game developers? I.e. They are responsible for the P2W and not the servers? MC is kinda the opposite, servers charging +$50 for a diamond sword etc.
I don't have a problem when people report these ridiculous servers, I'm just not able to sit right with suggesting all servers do this or should be taken down etc. Your "perhaps we shouldn't worry about them as much as the thread suggests" is a good summary.
In the end, I still don't see why people would give servers that charge these ridiculous prices the time of day. If the community as a whole stood up to it, or abandoned the servers, they wouldn't be able to get away with it.

This is exactly the kind of logic a 12 year old would use.
The age is the minimum recommendation.
Lego has the same exact thing. It's recommended for kids. This doesn't mean adults can't use/play with legos. What a kid does with legos and what an adult does with legos are on two entirely different levels. This can be compared with kids who just whine or act immature and people who make mods/servers.
Minecraft is a great tool for learning and exploring the inner workings of games that can be taken advantage of by young adults wanting to get into game design/programming.
Minecraft is also a great game for people of all ages to enjoy. Players that whine or act immature, however old they are, are bad for everyone. It just so happens that naturally kids are the ones that act immature and whine the most.
I don't mind kids, however if you're trying to justify kids because of a minimum age recommendation, you are just perpetuating the "immature" kid stereotype. No matter. We were all kids at some point. You'll realize

Why would you be getting anxious?
