posted a message on My World Dissappeared!!
I was having the very same problem, posted here, and didn't get any responses. After a bit of searching though, two things you could try are deleting your level.dat file (I would back it up somewhere first) and renaming your level.dat_old file to level.dat. If that doesn't work, and you have Windows 7 or Vista, you can try right clicking the World2 folder, clicking on the "previous versions" tab, and if you're lucky there will be a fairly recent one you can restore to.

Thankfully in my case the previous version was a day before my save disappeared, so I only lost a couple hours.

posted a message on Save exists in .minecraft but does not show up
My main map has suddenly disappeared from my list of saves. The World2 folder (the missing save is world2) is still in the right directory, with what looks like all the folders and files it should have-. I happened to save my world onto my flash drive just yesterday to show off my world to a friend (immediately after the last time it worked), and the save did not show up on their copy of minecraft either.

I was curious to see if InvEdit would recognize the world, and the load World2 icon was present. However, clicking on it brings up a lengthy error message, the beginning of which goes as such:
"System.IO.INvalidDataException: The magic number in GZip header is not correct. Make sure you are passing in a Gzip stream." It then goes onto list a long series of things all in the format of "at ____________________"

Note that all my other saves are working.

Is there anyone who is familiar with this problem or who might be able to help me recover this save? If you have nothing to contribute ("INVEDIT IS FOR N00BS" etc), please don't waste my time or yours by commenting

    Thanks in advance.

    Found:

Legend states of the entrance to a great palace lies hidden within the ruins of an ancient temple. Recent drastic changes in the geography of Chariot's Realistic Landscape are said to have unearthed the temple of legend. Only this lone rendering remains to hint to where the temple may be:

edit: in case of confusion, the treasure is the above room
