Halo. CoD (Call of Duty). What seems like an endless debate is pointless to begin with. If one were to look at the simple facts, it would be apparent what the winner would be. Can you guess? You’re right! It’s Halo!It is ~460 words
To start things off, let’s talk about appearances. Since its creation, Halo has been updating its graphics in not only capabilities, but also the engine that fuels them. It has always been a graphical leader since its debut in 2001. On the contrary, most people compare CoD: Modern Warfare and on with Halo; the CoD franchise has not updated even its engine let alone capabilities since that first Modern Warfare. CoD has “advanced” five games since then.
The campaigns are not often compared, because CoD players are afraid of them. Halo’s campaign has a story-line good enough to have 3 book series based off of the first two games alone. CoD’s campaign is a mere side-thought add-on to a game focused on an unchanging multiplayer.
Not only are books based off of it, they are good books. Almost every single Halo book has been a best seller since the series’ creation.
The core game-play: is it good? That question’s answer depends on the game. CoD’s game play is advertised as “Fun and Addictive!” However, only half of that is correct. The way the ranking is set up, it takes no skill to level up, so much as a billion hours of playing time. Your rank is not based off of your game-winnings, but how much you have played.
Halo fixes this. The better you are, the better your score, the better your rank. There are no “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts.”
Then there are the weapons. In Halo there are a set of weapons shared throughout the game, no differentiations. There are no advantages, and there are counter-balances to every weapon you can use.
In CoD, there are millions of overly-complicated combinations of different weapons systems. Not only does this consume your life more, forcing you to customize for hours on end, but the higher rank you are means more advantages are unlocked for you. This means the more addicted you are, the bigger unfair advantage you have over your opponents.
Halo not only set the bar for FPSs, it pioneered FPS dynamics. If you notice your reticule slowing down and even following enemies, Halo nearly invented that.
Forge is the ultimate creativity proving grounds. Exclusive to Halo, this amazing tool lets you edit and even create worlds at whim, with intuitive controls and nearly infinite possibilities.
Finally, look in CoD’s multiplayer. Now look in Halo’s multiplayer. Can you guess what’s not in CoD? Vehicles. In Halo, there are many vehicles to play in simply to enhance the experience.
Halo is truly the ultimate first-person-shooter.
