Question: If a horse only requires 5 leather and 3 iron to ride, can jump high enough to cross terrain like fences, and can move that fast, then who will ever build minecart systems?
Horse haters, I guess. Or people who can't find horses. -

I am a bit annoyed abou the update. I was about to download quite a few mods that a suddenly need uppdating. Is the anyway to backdate minecraft after updating? - To post a comment, please login.

I have done some things in the mean time. I went exploring (still on that trip, actually), raided a flowery swamp, got a baby green chocobo, and added Tinker's Constructs to my pantheon.
At the moment, I'm trying to think of a good goal for this playthrough to hold my interest on. If you've got an idea, I'd be happy to hear it.
EDIT: Oop. Make that Tinker’s Constructs, Metallurgy, Aquaculture, and The Twilight Forest.

I found a series of circular holes, the largest being maybe 5 blocks diameter, filled with water on a tiny island. I was in creative (it was going to be a world for goofing around with mods) so I swam down the largest to see how deep it went and found bedrock at the bottom.

My game is packed with mods, and one is Chococraft. Chocobos are from Final Fantasy.

Phoenix
Spawning: Extreme Hills and variants. Rare.
Appearance: Something between a crane and an eagle. Its wings, tail, and legs are covered in fire, and its feathers (where visible) are a rainbow of golds, reds, oranges, purples, and blues. Around 15 blocks long, though most of it is tail.
Health: 60 points/30 hearts
Attack Damage: 7 points, plus fire damage
Behavior: Is usually peaceful, and glides in circles high above the ground. Is hurt slightly by water, and may seek shelter during storms. It will fight back if attacked. Sometimes spreads fire while walking.
Drops: Heart of Fire (uncommon), 5-15 feathers, 1-5 phoenix feathers, 1-4 fire, 0-6 glowstone dust.
There is a slightly more common variant, found in the Nether, called a Dark Phoenix. These have blue tips to their flames, and ashy black scales. These can drop a heart of darkness, extra glowstone, and soulsand in addition to normal phoenix drops.
Various Large Birds
These aren't as complex as my others, so I won't bother giving them seperate entries. Large birds like eagles are rather neglected in this mod. These all drop feathers like a chicken, plus special drops if noted. Not all have to be included, if they are added.
Shoebill: Two-block tall stork, with gray feathers and a weird wide beak. Might get cranky and bite you. Found in swamps, tamed with raw fish or raw meat.
Marabou: The bird in my avatar! Mostly naked head, long beak, black and white feathers. Will eat rotten flesh or raw meat left on the ground, and can glide. Spawn in savannas and plains.
Vulture: No specific type, possibly based in part off one. Same behavior and spawns as the marabou. May have a turkey vulture varient with a feathered neck, which appears in forests.
Lammergeier: A very large vulture found in mountains, with golden feathers. Eats bones, and can be tamed with them. Tame lammergeiers have a medallion around their necks.
Eagle: There can be different types, with different eagles, but for now I'll base it on the Golden Eagle. Eat various small critters, and can be tamed with beef or pork. Eagles can be found in mountains, forests, plains, taigas, and mesas. Drop feathers and eagle talons (substitue for big cat claws, or flint in arrows).
Gull: Gulls! Eat fish, make horribly annoying noises. Found on beaches and form huge flocks.
Heron: Sameish model as the marabou, with normal feathering and a gray-blue color (based off a Great Blue Heron). Appears in rivers and swamps, but may also show up near forest or plains lakes. Can be tamed with fish.
Parrots
Spawning: Jungles.
Appearance: Come in cockatiel, parakeet, and macaw varieties. The cockatiel is white with a yellowish crest (???); the parakeet is green with a blue head and black speckles (wild budgie); and the macaw is yellow, red and blue (blue-and-gold macaw).
Health: 11 health/5.5 hearts.
Attack Damage: 2 health/1 heart.
Behavior: Fly about and squawk, mostly. They can be tamed with an apple. I'm not sure if this is possible, but I would like parrots to have a small chance of learning noises they hear, and occasionally repeating them.
Drops: 0-2 feathers.
Phoenix Feather
Phoenix feathers, when crafted with a bit of iron, make a torch with double the light radius (Phoenix Torch). They can also be crafted with themselves to make blaze powder, with iron and a stick for a phoenix arrow (sets the target on fire, flies straighter), and made into fire-resistant, unbreaking armor (don't question it).
Are sort of a reddish-gold color.
Bird Cage
Come in two versions. The small version is 1x1, and only holds the small birds in the current version. The large version is 2x2, and can hold the large birds and parrots detailed above (but not storks and herons). Kind of like a fish bowl.
First, you need screens, which are made by putting four string in a crafting table. Putting a plank block on the top-middle and bottom-middle of the crafting GUI, plus three screens on either side, makes a small bird cage. Putting four of these in a crafting table makes a large one.
