Hexalobular posted a message on When you need to know something...Posted in: DiscussionThe Wiki first.
Obscure things or things I don't know the name of, usually just concepts, I Google.
Then ask here in the forums. Or search the forums first, but the search function is crap so that usually doesn't give useful results.

DuhDerp posted a message on When you need to know something...Posted in: DiscussionDiscord servers are kinda on the same level as wikis for me, as not all mods have a wiki at all or only have one for an outdated version, or only have one that's incomplete/vague and doesn't have the info I'm looking for. People like to show off their stuff, they like to talk about it, and they like asking/answering questions.
For bug-stuff, most mods have a Git repository and bugtracker so I'll go there first. Sometimes, particularly in the case of when mods are first arriving to a new minecraft version, the curseforge comments section can be helpful in determining if a bug is really a bug (and if it's been fixed or not) or I'm just unlucky/doing stuff wrongly.
Some things are either simple to test yourself or are so way off in the weeds that nobody's ever thought to check it out. For example, waterlogged blocks can become infinite springs but the water you pull from a waterlogged-block infinite spring cannot be put back into the infinite spring the way you can with an old-fashioned water-source infinite spring.

Vic2Point0 posted a message on What is the absolute best way to make it rain more often in Minecraft?Posted in: DiscussionUpdate: I sorted it out so I thought I'd share exactly how (I can't be the only person wishing they could do this).
I basically followed Hexalobular's general advice but had to hunt down the details. I created two hopper clocks using the method illustrated here:
For me, placing exactly 2 items in the second clock works great. It rains for about five minutes and is clear for about 12. If you want less rain, you can tweak this by adding one item at a time to the second clock. I then enabled cheats, switched to creative mode and gave myself a command block. I placed that right next to the redstone block in the second hopper timer.
After that I followed the instructions here to keep the message from going off every time the weather changed (as that can be immersion-breaking, the same reason I didn't want to just download a mod for switching the rain on and off manually). Start at 4:22.
Here's hoping this well help other people in the future!

TheMasterCaver posted a message on am i allowed to distribute alpha/beta server jars?Posted in: DiscussionOne thing I'm curious about is how the Wiki is allowed to host game jars on sites like Mediafire; for example, this is one of the download links on their Minecraft 2.0 page:
https://www.mediafire.com/?we3y7ysly1cb9si
Also, if Mojang is searching for "lost" versions to add to the launcher they seem to have forgotten about this archive, which says it was made by Mojang (or maybe the uploaded just added that to indicate that Mojang made them) and includes most of the Indev versions which are not in the launcher (all of the Indev versions marked as "Unavailable in the launcher, but archived elsewhere" link to this archive); there are also links to other archives for pre-Classic to Beta:
https://archive.org/details/Minecraft-JE-Indev
However, they do not seem to include server jars (the description only mentions clients). You may still be able to find them on old archived versions of Minecraft.net, with consistent archives going back to early 2010 (any pages and their downloads can be archived as long as the site allows it and the media type is achieved):

Alvoria posted a message on Future Changes to Site RulesPosted in: Forum Discussion & InfoQuote from KingJaspLight»
Yes! Please allow bumping... once per day would be awesome. Profanity now days is okay. Thanks!
I've never been quite sure why people want this. Like... you do realize that if YOU can do it that everyone else can do it too right? So you get your once-a-day bump in and then... what happens? Your thread gets IMMEDIATELY buried by the thousand or so other people who are also getting theirs in. So what's gained besides wasting everyone's time? I don't understand.
That said, I agree that our bumping policy should be revised. In practice if not in writing. We do supposedly allow bumping for "significant changes or updates", but what we as staff see as "significant" and what the general public sees as "significant" are clearly two separate things. We need to really expand our list of allowed update types that won't earn a warning. Admittedly I don't deal with the servers section very much, so this is a bit of an outsider's perspective. Take it with a grain of salt.
As for the profanity rule, I'm very much against relaxing that. I know I'm outspoken in this regard, but civil discourse is one of the things we have going for us as a site. I like that people can come here and not feel in danger of being insulted or cussed out. I like the idea that parents can feel OK letting their children browse, post, and contribute to this community without having to fret over the content they'll encounter. Too many people treat decorum like some kind of shackle when in reality a measured amount of gentile behavior is what sets us free to discuss topics in an open forum such as this one. When we eliminate the rude and the crass, we are left with ideas and discussion. And that's what we want.

HueyLaurn posted a message on Minecraft 1.17 Update Opinion ThreadPosted in: Recent Updates and SnapshotsAll popular Minecraft Youtubers that talk about the 1.17 update feels like they are doing it because of a sponsorship. It feels like a biased video about the update because of a sponsorship contract is preventing them from saying critical/negative things.
I hate the spikes, the bundles, the stupid telescope, the archaeology stuff, and new pots. They feel like things you would easily find in modded Minecraft from 1.8.- Spikes: I would expect 3D spikes or something, but no, instead we have 2D spikes just like how plants are presented. I hate how thick they are and feel like a total eye-sore.
- Bundles: They have the exact same functionality as shulker except worse. The main problem I have with this is the UI of it, instead of seeing the exact number or what items that are inside it, you just get a blob of items and manually have to count them.
- Telescope: We never needed and we still never needed it. I feel like it is equivalent to clocks, they are worthless other than to have them on a item frame for decoration.
- Archaeology stuff: Why would we need this in a update? This is straight up feels like it is from a archaeology/Jurassic Park mod!! There is no purpose of this stupid new feature other than getting expensive items from dirt/gravel OR being able to create a pot.
- Pots: This feels like a custom block that a map developer would make for their map. It's cool I guess? But I find it still very dumb.
Also is it me or does it seem there will be a BIG performance problem?? The brushes for example, it feels like it turns dirt/gravel/etc into snow, where there are multiple layers of something. I feel like if there is too many of these different layer blocks it will have a performance problem.

AdrivanRO posted a message on Chunk loaders should be added to Vanilla Minecraft.Posted in: SuggestionsCurrently you either have to install a mod (which is not ideal if you want to play vanilla) or use some very cumbersome methods involving nether portals to keep remote chunks loaded.
This makes things like long distance railroads to transport items not worth building. You are also forced to AFK at farms instead of being able to play elsewhere while resources are produced.
I would personally like to see a simpler way to keep chunks loaded added to SINGLEPLAYER Minecraft.
Perhaps an idea would be to have the furnace minecart load chunks around it as long as it is fueled. This behaviour would be optional (and disabled by default) in multiplayer minecraft for performance reasons. But we should definitely have this option if we want to use it in our single player world. This would open up a world of new possibilities!
What do you think?

Profanity? NO NO. I love using it, but I'm a grown up. There's kids here. Now, I think we could have a system with a self-censored asterisk instead of any intended profanity. Like: "oh *, I won't do that!".
BUMping? NO NO. It makes no sense, cause then everybody is doing it, then it's like Alvoria said. Your post ends up buried anyway, because everybody is bumping. Wanna bump your post? Find something meaningful to add to it. Otherwise NO.
Just leave the rules the way they are. Not all sections are created equal.

YES!
THIS.
Yup, I totally agree. I don't see the point in non-renewable mobs, really...

The value is the fun of facing them in combat...

I agree with OP. But not instead. They should be both. So you want do a contraption, with signals and etc to blow the TNT? Use Redstone. You want to put a TNT on the ground and make a fuse so you can light it from safety? Use gunpowder, 1 per block, but it will be consumed by the fire and lost. I think it's a great suggestion.
