I've seen a few modders accused of stealing and/or copying textures for use in their mods. The other night I decided to do a bunch of textures of ores and ore blocks that ANYONE can use for ANYTHING (mods, resource packs, giggles).
I'm not some uber-awesome texture person. I haven't done any digital art in a long time, and its been over a decade since I did any pixel art. Therefore, I'm not going to claim that the textures are magnificent. I did these while watching TV. These are all mine, I didn't copy anyone or start with the base game textures (except for the stone). I started with a basic design & the hue shifted, saturated, desaturated, etc to give a bunch of options for each design. Hopefully some of you will find them useful.
Most of the ore textures are pretty good... for vanilla. A few of them are really difficult to make out, though, which isn't good. Still, the vast majority of them are usable and most seem pretty original in composition so that's good.
The ore blocks are mostly just... meh. None of them are reminiscent of the default ore blocks at all, which I'd assume is that people are expecting. Most of the ones you have are just patterns or noise without much in the way of form. They're kinda the weak link here, sorry to say.
I really hope that mod-makers find this useful. I know that there are quite a few modders, particularly smaller ones, who have trouble getting graphics. They have a bad habit of posting here in the texture section asking for help, but refusing to give any details of what they're going to want someone to do; and end up getting ignored because of their insistence on secrecy. Having something like this is good because it provides something that they can easily draw on without having to break their precious vows of silence.
If nothing else, you now have a thread to direct people who are accused of stealing ore textures to.
Overall, good work. I sincerely hope you expand your collection. Perhaps some more metalic-looking ores? Most of the ones you have now seem to be gemstone themed. Some ready-to-go gemstone or ingot item textures would probably also be useful.
HOLY GOB, where were you when I was in art school?? That was the most cogent and useful critique I've ever gotten...on anything!
I definitely have a long way to go to match the vanilla style. I started with gemstone-like ores and blocks because they're a bit easier than metals but those are next. I'm not sure about icons, I tried some high-res ones and they were terrible but I'll give them a shot at the vanilla sized ones. At the very least this is great practice for me since I haven't done much by way of digital art or textures in eons. Feedback like yours gives me a great idea as to the directions I need to focus on.
I hope that these textures give mod makers a better visual vocabulary when they ask for textures too. At least they can point to shapes, colors, etc and give suggestions from there.

Well... if the age in your profile is accurate I was probably slaving away in a factory because my art school degree didn't get me diddly-fudge.
I'm glad you liked my critique. It seems like a lot of people around here these days just think I'm being a jerk when I give critiques. I'm happy you're one of those rare people to take it for what it is: an effort to help a fellow artist improve!

Yea, I can see why you'd do that. It's definitely easier to work with brighter colors and facets at 16x rather than trying to do the subtle shading and variation associated with metal.
As for the item icons, try copying vanilla and some 16x packs just for practice. Just have them open in another window, and try to copy what you see. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

That would be nice. The more detailed and informative a request is the more likely it is to attract the attention of someone who can fulfill it.
Oh, hey, no problem. Any time you want something critiqued, feel free to ask me. I'm always available to give a critique to anyone trying to improve as an artist.

Thanks again for the great critique!
