Updated to v0.0.4. Check out the new vids of owls and eagles.
Please try and report any bugs.
Introduction
I know there are a lot of other animal mods out there. But tameable eagles aren't that common so maybe you'll like this.
This mod simply contains of collection of wild animals:
Tameable Birds of Prey: Eagle, Hawk, and Owl. Tameable with raw salmon (when tames a leg band appears).
Tameable Big Cats: Tiger, Lion, Jaguar, Cougars, and Lynx. Tameable with meat and act like wolves (not ocelots).
Elephants
Snakes
They will spawn naturally (right now I have them spawning quite a bit for testing, but will eventually tone that down a bit), and there are also spawn eggs.
The big cats, elephants and snakes are ageable so can be babies. I didn't do that with the birds of prey because then I'd have to do a bunch of stuff with nests and stuff (maybe for future update).
All the these are naturally passive, although you can use the config GUI to choose for the big cats to be man-eaters (they'll attack without provocation).
The birds of prey will hunt chickens and sheep on their own. They won't hunt after being tamed but will help you if you attack or are attacked. They occasionally perch (which is how you'll need them to be if you try to tame them) -- owls prefer to perch during the day, others prefer to perch during the night.
The big cats will hunt herd animals on their own, including elephants (although the elephants can defend themselves pretty well). You can see the elephants and tigers fighting in the video below.

You seem capable of very smooth animations how good are you at them?
I think I'm pretty good because I figured out a method that is similar to what "real" animators do for movies. What you do is position your model in all the steps that you like and record the position and angles in an array. Then you can simply step through the array to create the animation (just like how flipping through pages of drawings can create an animation).
This method is good because there is no math involved at all. Math is okay for regular movement, like swinging something using trig functions, but not good for irregular motion like flapping wings.
Since there are only about 10 positions per animation cycle, it isn't that much work to just record the actual positions you like.

Thanks for the positive feedback. While animal mods are pretty common, vanilla Minecraft has such a limited amount of entities it can really augment the game to have lots of animals (even with multiple animal mods). I know part of the charm of Minecraft is its quirky simplicity, but it is really seems a waste not to have some bird entities among other things.
Let me know if you have questions on how to use the mod, and please report any bugs. I might also take requests for other animals, especially if they are variants of these ones.
Hey it's me again! I've found a bug with the birds. When one of my tamed birds attack the elephant, ALL of the birds, chickens, cows and pigs nearby froze(Pretty much all entities that I've seen) , yet the Elephant's ears and nose were able to move. Also, when I hit all of the entities (including the elephant), there were no respond. The attack by the bird was not executed yet, therefore its froze like this: (In the attachments)

I have a tutorial describing the technique here: http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com/p/introduction-first-of-all-to-understand.html
Wow you're as good as I thought

Sorry I was out at the gym. Just responded.
Looks pretty neat, I'd love to see where this goes.
Just updated to v0.0.4. Fixed a couple issues.
I am liking this mod man ! Do you have plans on adding other stuff ?
AWESOME MODD!! I love the eagglless, shows that you have done your research
This mod needs more recognition It's great! I have a question though, are you going to add male lions?

Does this mod work with Bop?
Great mod, hope you continue it
Cool mod! Just noticed that it does not have WAILA support yet. The names are not shown right. Hope you will change that soon :).
This looks amazing. Look forward to being able to set up nest blocks and have an eagle family.
My idea: Pet owls that occasionally drop pellets. You can break these for bones and string.
can you please update to 1.8?
also can you add more animals like camels, turtles, fox, komodo dragon, raccoon etc.?
