Well, the past 3 years of my life I've gotten the distinct impression that dogs are more valued than cats. Is this true in Minecraft as well? Just a question.
This is a purely preference-based topic, so there's no real "answer," OP. That being said, in minecraft at least, cats are slightly more useful than dogs in that they keep Creepers away from you and your home. Dogs, though, will accompany you in to combat, but given that they have 0 armor they tend to die pretty quick. In real life? Well, again, preference-based. I'm sure plenty of people here will comment on how dogs are better given that they can be trained to be service animals, but how many people here need/have met/truly appreciate/trained a service dog? Cats can also be used as service animals, albeit in a more therapeutic way (nursing homes, prisons, autistic children).
This is my personal preference, but I prefer dogs. Big time. Cats seem kind of useless and annoying unless you just leave them outside your house all the time to keep the creepers away. Dogs, on the other hand, aid you in fighting, and just seem kind of fun to have around. Plus, you can dye their collar.

I like dogs better, cause they actually help you whilst fighting. Cats just scare away creepers, follow you, and don't take fall damage.
But for dogs you need to provide more care, such as feeding them when they fall down or take damage. You don't really need to worry about that for cats.
Dogs die very fast in combat, although it's understandable since they have 0 armour and their attacks are completely based around melee (not so good if you're in a zombie horde. Or being attacked by creepers). That being said, cats don't do much except look pretty and scare creepers away.
All in all, it's personal preference. Dogs are useful for scaring skeletons away, cats for creepers. I'd rate them about equal.

1. They are smarter.
2. They don't need to be trained.
3. They don't make loud, annoying sounds.
4. Cats choose you. Dogs woof and lick your face. Ugh.
