I wanted to create a 4x zoomed map with my base at the centre of it, however whenever i tried to do so it would always place my base at the very north west (top left) of the map. To try and counter this, i travelled exactly 1024 blocks (exactly half the amount of blocks that the sides of a 4x zoomed map represents) but now my base is off towards the south east (bottom right).
Maps are aligned to a grid so that no two maps of the same scale level will ever overlap, as discussed here; the only way to change this is to manually edit the map data file, which allows you to set the center to any coordinates, or use a mod but I don't know of any (prior to 1.8 maps always used the center set by the first zoom level, which uses a 128 block grid, so they could be centered within 64 blocks of any point. This was changed because you had to go all the way to the center of the next map to get it to align properly; the new system also means that you don't need to use coordinates, just go a bit off the current map).
These are just visual tips: I've got the exact same (Base in NW) orientation; I just Kept it - it Does on its edge, after all point-to that Map, showing direction and some relative-closeness, approaching it - and made the 3-other Maps, to surround-Spawn (it was by, for greater simplicity of re-pathing from "Bed Bugs," post-deaths). Map Wall.
1.13 (Update) came out - we could mount Item Frames on Ceilings and Floors, too - I tested it. I recommend ceilings, because you can (head's higher so-closer to next Block, than "invisible" feet /legs are to floor, at least a full Block-above) put it up directly over-head, and I'd put rows between the 2-high, 3-high spaces, to get a better-sense of zooming - oneself - out to see the scale.
This works better - you can get closer than having visually-obstructing Blocks - Blocking the view - between - than Map Walls (when they get more-than about 3-high). Ideally, both (Map Walls and Map Ceilings) : but we know that's a Lot of Iron; if in Survival Mode..

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

The fully zoomed out map made near spawn covers a 2048x2048 area betwee x/z -64 to 1984
As spawn is typically close to 0,0, a base build there will be invariably in corner of such map.
You can go build your base around 1000/1000, then it will be in center.
Another option you have is:
create 4 maps
Activate them in 4 different quadrants (0/0, 0/-128, -128/0, -128/-128)
Fully zoom them out, and fill them in.
Put them on wall frames in 2x2 pattern. You will have seamless 2x2 map with your base roughly in center.
