Wow, been a while since I've been here... almost a year.
Nice that 1.0 is out now and I've been playing Hardcore for the challenge. It's actually so much more fun, to be honest. Anyways, during the course of my playing I've encountered a glitch/bug that can really mess up a game and greatly annoy/frustrate the player.
When you're playing hardcore and you move to a new location (away from your initial spawn point), set up a house/setup and use a bed, it doesn't "reset" your spawn point. It does make a bit of sense that the developers didn't think of it as there is seemingly no real need to reset a spawn point because once you're dead, you're dead. However, it it necessary when you're using a compass and trying to find your way back to a specific point, which was what happened to me. I was trying to lure some pigs, cows and sheep back to the area and used my compass to walk my way back and got completely lost and had to survive several nights while searching, which was a giant pain and almost lost a significant amount of progress because of this glitch.
Anyone else encountered this? I've tried searching and even googling, "minecraft hardcore compass" and nothing.
Anyways, I strongly recommend Notch or a programmer fix this as soon as is possible.
Dammit. I wonder how everyone manages to find these tiny bugs. I cant find any bugs, and if i do, i probably will forget them, waiting for someone else to find. Nice find, man, but im not sure if this is a bug, it might be to make hardcore even more hardcore?
i see so you want it to point to your current spawn not the origional
Yes, absolutely. What would I want to go back to my original spawn point for if there is absolutely nothing there? In regular survival mode if you use a bed it resets your spawn point and your compass will direct you back to that point. It would be nice if it did the same thing in Hardcore mode even though you'll never respawn, otherwise compasses are almost entirely worthless unless you've built exactly where you spawned or close.

The compass points to your ORIGINAL SPAWN POINT, not your bed.
I could be mistaken but I believe at some point (I'm not sure, I haven't really played since 1.4 or 1.5 BETA), but when I was playing around that time I was able to get my compasses to direct me toward where I had reset the spawn.
If it's now (or always has been) your ORIGINAL SPAWN POINT, then it drastically loses any function. Why would they not at the very least have an option pop up (optional itself) asking if you would like to change your spawn point? This seems like common sense to myself and many other players, but perhaps some would disagree.
If I'm mistaken then so be it, my apologies, but my experience was that I had built (pre 1.0) houses and reset the spawn then my compasses would point at that spot. I usually checked that it did before going anywhere. Clearly this is different than Hardcore Mode where the logistics are a bit different and my experience has almost entirely been in standard Survival Mode, but I do remember my compass pointing toward my spawn point and not necessarily my original spawn point even after having moved a good distance away from my original spawn.
Especially now, considering the utility of exploring, different biomes and such, it would only make sense to have the compass function as such (making it an option would be ideal), as opposed to not. Seems unlikely that I'm the first person to suggest this contingent on the fact that I'm mistaken (and I will acknowledge that I may be) and the compass has always, since it's introduction, pointed you to the OSP.
you know what is more frustrating? my compass no longer points at my original spawn point. today it decided to switch locations on me... just a random place a few chunks from where I spawned originally. I had built my entire existence near my original spawn point. now I have to make a path from the new location to my base to reorientate myself to this unknown change.

Compasses HAVE NEVER pointed toward your bed.
