My chickens and cows keep climbing on top of fences and escaping! They keep glitching and such. Am I the only one that has this problem? All the animals touch the fence, they rise up in the air and then they walk out. Anyone else?
It's happened to me on occasions, but not as often as you seem to be having this problem. Bad luck, maybe? Glitchy animals is the reason that I made an entire building for my animal farms instead of just using fences.
my fences are usually 3 blocks high with spiderproof overhang but sometimes I swear I see animals outside that were inside. Haven't managed to catch any in the act so I could be crazy.
Use walls that are 2-3 blocks thick and 2-3 blocks high. Inconvenient, I know, but animals can "escape" 1-block thick walls, ESPECIALLY when they are thin blocks like fences.
I'll have to try the extra thick walls on my chicken pen. I can't seem to get more than four chickens at a time without one magically escaping my two-block-high fence.
Sometimes they die, too, which is equally puzzling. Doesn't seem like enough chickens for them to start "suffocating".
This does not solve the problem as fences are already treated as two blocks high by players and mobs. The reason animals glitch through fences on multiplayer is because they can occupy the same block as a fence. When that block re-loads, there is no way for minecraft to tell which SIDE of the fence the mob was on in that block, and it can sometimes end up on the wrong side of the fence.

I agree. Whenever I'm watching my herd of animals none escape, but when I return and they must spawn again inside the fence, then they leave. I DON'T agree with the moron named 'blind moron'

Actually they're treated as like 1 and 1/16ths high or so. It's just enough so that it's more than 1 block so you can't jump over it, but it is NOT two. Put a half slab by a fence and you'll see...

They glitch through fences on singleplayer as well. I've had it happen quite a few times since starting to keep animals beginning with 1.8.
Something similar can happen if you feed two animals of the same type wheat near a fence. The baby animal may end up spawning on the opposite side as its parents.
Wheat can be useful for luring escaped animals back in, but it also attracts the others that haven't escaped, potentially resulting in more escaped animals.
Chickens seem to do this much more frequently than other animals do, I've noticed.

Not sure what you're butthurt about.
I use 2-high fence walls around my animal pen. Nothing gets out of those.
Let's take a quick lesson from "real life". A feedlot, or stockyard, is generally surrounded by a secondary containment fence. The area between the two fences usually contains a roadway to allow ranch hands quick access to any point without disrupting the livestock as well as irrigation/drainage. This method is not used on large grazing lands.
The game does have the glitch of allowing cattle to leap over fencing by jumping off of each other. A calf or lamb spawned near a fence/gate will also sometimes appear on the other side. With a containment fence around your ranch you can lead animals back to thier pens while keeping them from wandering your cities. You still have to check your stock from time to time (what good rancher doesn't?). Minecraft chickens are magical, being able to leap tall fences at will. I have found 3 high will mostly prevent this, but remember to provide a large enough area for the number of animals in the pen to prevent "piggy backing". Have fun!
I never heard of this happening.. but creepers like dropping my fence which they shouldn't be able to :dry.gif:
just make sure there is no block next to the fence where they can drop it. I dont think that is your problem but just putting it out there just in case :smile.gif:
This is a very irritating problem and I hope it's fixed soon. The animals are not simply jumping over the fences. I have observed them walking right through the fences as if they're not there. Sometimes they glitch, sometimes they don't. It doesn't matter how high the fences are built. I have a chicken coop with fences two high and a roof over it, and they escape regularly. I've had to resort to using solid blocks instead, which (for someone obsessed with aesthetics) is disappointing. I have a farm which I brought mooshrooms to from an incredible distance, and logged in to find all but one gone--they had walked through fence and drowned in a waterfall. Fortunately it seems that fences keep monsters at bay, but that's about all they're good for. Hugely annoying glitch.
Respond regardless.
Dig one block down, and put fences on top. Or think of it as a two high fence, but the lower fence is a full block instead.
It works REALLY well. :3

I wonder if it's an issue with the server I'm playing on perhaps?
