Any ideas on why my nether portal randomly explodes when I transition from the overworld to the nether? I've tried re-creating the circumstances for each time it happened, but it doesn't happen the same way twice.
What do you mean by exploding? Does the obsidian blow up and the frame gets damaged or do you hear a noise and the portal is no longer lit? A Ghast could hit the portal and cause the portal to go out but won't damage the obsidian frame.
Thanks for your replies. The only mod I have installed is Enchantview but it's not active on our server.
I am playing on a vanilla server with a friend, so there's no hijinks involved.
The obsidian isn't exploding. What happens is this: I step into the portal, the loading terrain screen comes up and as soon as the nether loads there is a TNT explosion sound and I'm thrown forward with about 4 hearts of damage. Wen I turn around the portal is out and there is explosion damage to the blocks surrounding the portal.
It's not a ghast as we have our portal surrounded in a stone brick enclosure.
The last time it happened, after the explosion there was an overworld zombie in with me, apparently spawned after the explosion as he was undamaged.
well mabey your freind is in the nether and he sleaps in a bed whan you came and it exploaded
As I said, It's not anything he is doing. I know what he is doing when I enter the nether. The first time it happened he was exploring the abandoned mine, the second time he was working on expanding our villager population.
If you leave a chunk right before TNT goes off, It stays as it is, right before exploding. This wouldn't be an issue except in the nether, where if you leave through a portal, it gets unloaded too, but if you go back in, it will resume.
Pay attention to everyone who has been saying this, and not everyone else.
Again, there is no TNT being set and left. There is no PVP, this is a cooperative, private vanilla server game with a friend I have known for 22 years. Even if we weren't gaming in the same room I know his play style enough to know he didn't set a trap. As it is, we are in the same room and we know what each other is doing all the time.
This is why I'm asking what else could be causing it. All the easy explanations have been accounted for as not being responsible, yet it still happened. Twice.
Hi. I am the guy that is playing on the server with Rich. I am not -- repeat, I am not -- setting any TNT. Rich is a "mining" player -- he loves to go out exploring and mining and building things with Redstone. I am a 'build nice looking things' player. While he is out mining or exploring the nether or antagonizing Endermen, I am generally working on an upgrade to a villager's house, or adding new rooms to the safe house.
I have no desire to PVP him on this server. We are, however, dealing with at least three (perhaps four?) explosions that have taken place right next to/in the nether portal, usually on the nether side.
The portal has been surrounded with stone block to protect it from Ghasts and such. It is well lit to prevent spawning nearby.
The overword portal is adjacent to the safe house in an area that, unless it is a spider, it is not getting near it.
it gets real tiring when kids make threads like this.
Your disdain does this community a real disservice. If by kids, you mean we like playing computer games, so be it. By our ages, however, we generally aren't considered kids. I'm 39, Dave is 45(I think - yes, I've known him for 22 years but I forget my own age sometimes...)
look, both of you, every reason that exists has been given to you, and you categorically and emphatically deny all of them. so either
Neither of us particularly like asking for help on an issue - we are both pretty self sufficient and prefer to troubleshoot things ourselves, something instilled from a decade of military service from each of us. So, when we go through the trouble of creating accounts on this forum specifically to get help for a problem that we know nobody else has reported (as we did lots of searching for this issue prior to doing so), it really is getting to be a problem. And we would like help figuring it out - not repeated reasons that are definitely not what's going on. Your statement that every reason that exists for this issue has been given is flawed in that if that were the case, the issue would be fixed by now.

c. you just aren't paying attention.
Unfortunately true in many things I have done in my life, but not in this case
unless your copy of the game has some bizarre glitch that specifically just makes your nether portals explode, and I sincerely doubt that is the case.
Ah, so every reason was not given! We thought it might be a glitch too, but since we can't get a (reliable) recreation of the issue, we doubt this as well.
I actually have nothing on my agenda today, so I will spend the day doing everything I can to re-create the problem so I can post more specifics.
The only thing I can think of is that there is a hole somewhere in your stone brick enclosure and a ghast is shooting through it. Other than that, it might be a glitch.

That would be a good idea, yeah. Also, for poops and giggles, maybe upload some screenshots from several different angles so we can see what you're dealing with.
Ok, what follows is the layout of our nether portals. We are using the seed -8370205672301979124
This is our original portal, the base of it's left frame starts at
x: 226
y: 77
z: 240
This is the destination portal created from using the above:
This is the exterior of the stone house built around the above to protect it from ghasts:
This is our second portal, built just outside of an NPC village, the base of it's left frame starts at
x: 123
y: 65
z: -1275
This is the destination portal created upon use of our second portal
This is our third portal build inside a stronghold, the base of its left frame starts at
x: -812
y: 14
z: -263
The last time the explosion happened to me was upon activation of the third portal, which transported me to the original destination portal (second pic above) - even though it is more than 1024 blocks from either of the other 2 portals.
Your stronghold and village portals don't look well enough lit around them to keep mobs from spawning and wandering into the portal. Especially the village portal.
Obsidian cannot be destroyed by explosions (except from a spawned in Wither), so if the frame itself is exploding, it must be a mod.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Or a creeper went through the portal and waited for you on the other side.

It can't be a creeper as there is no place for one to spawn with access to the portal.
It isn't my friend as I know what he's doing when I go through as we our computers are in the same room - and that is not how he plays.
