This might be a redstone topic, but since I don't know what answers will be put forth, I don't know if it is or not. I spawned in extreme hills +, so very few available home locations. I mined some coal from the side of a cliff, and made a home of sorts there. Since the door is back in the hill a little, there is a bit of a cave in front. Got up one morning, and there's a Zombie at the door. I started to open the door and dispatch it, but noticed that he had a creeper buddy. So I'm thinking that some sticky pistons and stone blocks could be used to suffocate things outside the door, or even a trap door and drop shoot. Suggestions anyone.
For a kill area, I'd probably narrow the cave to a 1 block wide tunnel leading out, with a piston floor to some kind of pit, which you can operate from your side of the door to remove any mobs who might be there when you go to exit. Nothing tricky about that. If your doorway was 2 or more blocks above the main ground level outside, you could just light the well cave and have a vertical wall with ladder access so no mobs could get near the door in the first place - that works for both entering and exiting.. Or you could have a dispenser in the 1 block wide tunnel scenario somehow with a lava bucket which you could activate again safely from within, to burn the mobs and then deactivate, although you'd lose any drops. Perhaps the piston floor with a water filled 2-deep trench and hoppers in the bottom so the mobs drown and you collect the loot somewhere in a chest ...
Cool ideas, I usually just open the door, and deal with it that way, but creepers make such a mess. Piston floors would work, 25 block drop so I can still collect the XP.
Another idea would be to have a water source pour out from above your door and have a pit on each side of the door that the water flushes mobs into...or at least away from your door so you can fire through the doorway at them.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Would you get XP from that? Drops certainly ...
