With the 1.2 release coming and my impending SMP reset I'm refining my building plans on my SSP map more concerned with function and circuit layouts than appearance. I got to thinking about initial startup and material gathering and future appearances.
When you guys start out do you refuse to build anything unless you have the material you want for appearances sake?
Do you build some initial buildings and demolish them later?
Do you expand keeping your initial structures?
Do you abandon once you've harvested all the material you need to really start?
I have a storage building, wheat tower, and sugar cane terrace all up and running and all completely cobblestone with some glass pane windows so far :smile.gif:

1) I always do an initial build in cobblestone.
2) Yes, and re-make the materials.
3) I usually keep the original idea and shape of the building.
4) It would be 'better' to wait till you have what you need but some people get tired of all the 'work' part and just ditch the effort. Its like real life, you should start now and you can always 'upgrade' later.
The last couple of times I've started fresh, I build a dirt hole for the first nights, and then make a timber frame cobblestone house as operational base before I start big projects. I do not demolish the house, as it fits nicely with my style of building.
I use a basic shelter by my spawn to get started then explore and build from there. I rarely destroy and rebuild. I'm a planner so I plan quite a bit and then build to last. I don't know about monochromatic, but I lean heavily toward minimalistic functionality over aesthetics.
I have found so far that if I take the time to make something that looks better than the use I get out of it normally I don't get as bored as quickly because I enjoy the scenery unfolding as I build.
I can usually manage to set up a small house (About 5x6x6) that's aesthetically pleasing before the first day is up. In those rare emergency situations I can't, I grab whatever blocks I have on hand and box myself in.
I'm not really monochromatic, I can build with anything and make it look good. Even cobblestone.
I don't start projects until everything is in order. For example, I have an EXP farm and lots of enchanted items, and more than enough stuff for a successful Nether run, but I refuse to build a portal until I've finished digging a 30x30 quarry mine. I plan to build a base in the walls of said quarry.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

I disapprove.
