So, my mine base is in a large rectangular area at y=11, empty except for a small house and my main nether portal. I put the portal down there because I read somewhere that they...work better? I don't remember why (or where I saw it)...but it was a convenient location for the portal anyway, so it's down there. Anyway. Mobs do occasionally spawn in this room, but not in such quantities as to be problematic; I just kill them when they show up, no biggie. What I didn't realise was that they were spawning while I was out of sight and going through the portal, so when I went through the portal last time, I was greeted by a swarm of creepers, zombies, and skeletons hanging around the nether side of the portal, and died pretty much immediately (the creeper explosions also put the portal out and I wasn't carrying flint and steel, so I had to find my way back through a secondary portal I had fortunately set up).
Since I am, in fact, noobishly inexperienced, I forgave myself for this incident, but I also immediately built walls connecting the portal to the house, so this will not happen again.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
That's nothing. I spawned in an ice plains biome, and used a water source block to get down into a ravine that spawned close enough to where the bonus chest landed that I could literally toss items into it (my first few spawns resulted in me spawning in midair over said ravine, causing me to die from falling.) I had set up camp right on the edge of the ravine with all my resources up there except a furnace, some fuel, sticks and cobble for extra tools, and a crafting table. I used up all the cobble on picks and got a buttload of ores and stuff. When the last pick broke, I went to go back and found out I failed to cover the water source block. Luckily there was a cave system that fed into the ravine, but it took me forever to find a way out.

I once used this to prank a friend of mine. I happened to find a zombie spawner near his house so I built a nether portal there so that it would link up with his in the nether, then added some water to push the zombies into the portal. I think I really went overkill because the next time he went through his portal he told me that for some reason his Minecraft had crashed. I went through there myself in full battle gear and immediately dropped to 3 FPS. There were about 300 zombies there. That was fun I guess.
