I am growing tired of making massive ridiculous towers and crazy platforms and would like to form a safe compound on the ground for a change. What are the specs for that? With proper lighting, is there a certain wall height that will make it safe? Just looking for tips for establishing a safe ground space.

3-high wall with a ledge will keep everything out. :biggrin.gif:

Just light it well and create a wall with a ledge on the outside of it to prevent spiders from crawling up it.
Make a spider-proof wall at least 3 high. On the server I play on, I have a 4 tall, 4 thick castle wall with lighted walkways on top and guard towers in the corners. The courtyard on the inside is lit up with enough torches to keep every square of space at a light level of 8 or higher (hostiles spawn at 7 or lower). The roofs of my buildings also incorporate lighting, to prevent hostiles from spawning on rooftops inside my base/player sanctuary.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I protect the entrance to my base by using a 2-wide corridor through the entry tower that uses a retractable, sticky piston operated floor suspended above a lava pit, as well as lockable iron doors right behind that.
Proper lighting. As much grass as possible. A wall with a 1 block lip overhang (on the outside) will prevent spiders from coming over the wall, and remember skeletons can shoot in an arch, so I would make my wall height around the perimeter as tall as is feasible, and in no case less than 5 blocks.

A one-and-a-half block high fence is enough to keep mobs from jumping over it, but you need at least 2 blocks to prevent creepers from seeing you (in case you're right next to the wall when one sneaks up) and skeletons from shooting over. Be aware of any higher ground outside the wall (e.g. a hill right next to the wall) and make the wall higher if necessary. And of course, add a ledge to prevent spiders from climbing over.
