Greetings fellow crafters, Ive played the Xbox360 version of this lovely game since it first launched on consoles and have since upgraded to the Xbox One at the beginning of this Month.
Prior to the upgrade, I had taken a year long hiatus from minecraft and have gotten back into it full swing, so I am a little rusty on my knowledge regarding much, there have been lots of updates too.
Anyways, I need some advice on slime farms. I found a good slime chunk a few nights back and have since cleared the entire 16x16 area from Y50 down to Y5., I have my platforms made, my dispensers are Loaded and it's lit up like the sun.
There are a few caves that run into the edges of the chunk. My question is, in order to maximize efficiency, how far into these side caverns should I light up and block off to prevent other mobs from adding to the mob population count?
It will depend on where you're standing. You'll need to light up / spawn proof a sphere with a radius of 128 blocks around you to maximise your spawn rates. Generally easiest to just do a square (256x256) rather than try to work out the sphere co-ordinates though.
That will take a fair bit of work though.
What design are you using for the slime farm, I'm not familiar with ones that use dispensers?
It's an old design, it uses platforms for spawning, with the dispensers as a water wash system. When the farm is off or when I'm washing down the system, the dispensers on each level of the farm form a massive water channel that pushes the slime to the bottom of the farm. I can leave this wash system on to turn off the farm as well. I'm not good at explaining it, but one of the best looking versions I've seen of this particular farm you can find in a YouTube video called "Son of Slime Farm" uploaded by "The Baratacus" as part of his Let's play series called New World Order.
It works very well. I've actually managed to get 25 large Slime at once using this method when I was still on Xbox360.
However it's a manual style, so you have to kill the slimes yourself or modify it.
Ok, that makes sense. Sounds good that you can turn it off when you don't need it running, Could hook that up to a Comparator that checks if a set of storage chests are full and automatically turns off the farm once it's full of slime balls.
Yeah whenever the console versions get that I will eventually, but being on the Xbox one, I have no clue what update to compare it to. When I was on the xb360, I knew exactly what each update was compareable to the PC version.

Good luck.
