I haven't played Minecraft in a while and only started again recently so I don't know many of the new mobs.
I went exploring in a boat in my realm, but out of nowhere my boat was attacked from underwater. I couldn't see any mobs like the Drowned or any Guardians, and I hadn't rowed over a magma or soul sand bubble pillar.
The boat rocked for a bit like a player was hitting it but as I rowed away quickly it stopped, like I had left a mobs range of attack. I didn't have any more problems like that until I left the boat later and was dragged down with a jerk as I was swimming (again, hadn't gone over any soul sand or magma bubble pillars as I had made sure to check afterward, and I wasn't lagging).
Could someone inform me of what this was and what was going on? Would like to know more so I know what to do next time. Thanks
It really sounds like you went over magma bubble columns.
Another possibility is that your boat was being hit by tridents thrown up from below. If you only got in range of the trident chucker when you were right over it, the drowned would have been deep enough that you wouldn't have seen it.

Just because you said you havent been playing recently im just gonna explain what he meant by "going over magma bubble columns." In the new update they added a lot of new water mechanics and one of them is soul sand makes bubbles that push you up in water and magma blocks make bubbles that pull you down, (they also added new ravines in the ocean that will spawn with magma blocks in the bottom of them) and if you stay over them too long it will pull you and your boat down.

Just quoting the above from her post as I think it's easy to overlook.
I've personally not played 1.13 yet, so I don't know. I think CM probably has the right of it, though. They can be hard to see underwater and from a distance.

Yes, I saw what JeannieDeluxe said, but that basically eliminates any possible explanation. So one or the other happened and they just didn't notice it.

This is exactly what happens when you go over a magma bubble column in a boat. It matches the description in the Wiki.
Whirlpool bubble columns can be seen by air bubbles wandering downwards and it drags entities downwards. When magma block is placed on the bottom, a whirlpool bubble column is generated. When riding a boat over a whirlpool it will begin to shake and finally will sink if kept above the whirlpool for too long.

My money is on the bubble column.
