I've been playing a world for quite a while and am not mining below sea level. I've mined huge amounts of coal and modest amounts of iron but little else. I'm wondering whats the highest layer that anyone has encountered a diamond on survival mode single player?
It shows up at elevations ranging from 1 to 19 blocks above the bottom of the map (for comparison, sea level is around 64 blocks above the bottom of the map). Below elevation 18, it occurs in roughly 0.08% of rock.
If I understand correctly, it's most common at 17 or below, but can be found up to layer 19. Which seems weird, since I thought it was most common at 16 or below.

The highest the bottom of a vain can be is 16, and the bottom of a vain can be covered by a different vain.
I've found Diamonds on layer 17 too but on SMP.
edit: For all those who don't know, sea level is 63.

10 down from sea level? So level 53? or 10 meaning layer 10?

I've mined a diamond at layer 19, but as others have said the start of the vein was at layer 16.
