I was thinking maybe if I mounted part of my RAM (I have 8 GB of it) as a disk, then had minecraft do it's reading and writing to there instead of the HDD, then had it dump to the HDD prior to unmounting I could get insane performance.
Think about it. My RAM has a confirmed data transfer rate of 15,000 MBps. My hard drive? Less than 100. So, does anyone know if such a setup is possible? Woul I need a VM to do this?
With a HDD I don't notice any problems with my basic 7200RPM HDD. If you put minecraft on a SSD though its a great idea if your ramdisk can save and delay start (so your boot times are not 10+ secs slower) to limit the ungodly amount of writes this game seems to do.
That is just me though. The only problem I ever had with ramdisks is most of the good ones with delay startup for example cost quite a bit of $$$. If you don't mind boot up times increasing you can try this one (really good and free) http://memory.dataram.com/products-and- ... re/ramdisk
The downside here is it can save to ISO on boot up / boot down but you run a slight risk of losing data between saves and if the ISO ever corrupts (never has for me) you could lose your saves. So id do daily back ups if I used one.
