Hello, I have been dealing with this problem for 3 days now.
My friend runs a minecraft server off of his computer, and we've played together on numerous occasions. Recently we got into quite the run of playing and started work on a large project... that is; until Monday night.
Out of nowhere, and with having changed precisely nothing besides a windows update, my client is now incapable of joining servers.
WHAT HAPPENS:
- I start minecraft, as normal
- I am able to enter the IP address, and the UI shows the server
- I click "join server", here, one of several things will happen:
- Either:
1) It will hang on "loading terrain", for several seconds, then either state "Connection was lost" or, and this is the strangest one of all: "an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host"
2) I will successfully join the server (my friend can see my life-less body, but cannot interact), and I will see a black void with the Minecrart UI for several seconds, then I will be timed out and kicked
I have changed PRECISELY NOTHING, I have ZERO mods, this is a completely vanilla game. Literally, one night it worked, the next it didn't, and hasn't for 3 days now.
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
- Updating Java
- Updating Minecraft
- Restarting Minecraft
- Restarting the computer
- Restarting the server
- Restarting the server with a new map
- Dropping render distance to 2 chunks
- Switching to a modded launcher to check that the problem persists
- Refreshing my IP address
- Flushing my DNS cache
- Checking that my connection is working (youtube, voice chat, websites, etc, all work fine)
- Restarting my modem
- Restarting my router
- Going into my router and changing NAT settings
- Getting both the server host and a third party to check that THEY can connect and play, they CAN, so apparently the universe has it in for me and me specifically.
NOTHING has worked; no matter what I do, I get the same 3 results, seemingly with no rhyme or reason as to why I get any of them.
I've run an internet speed test: my connection deos not appear to be the problem, as it shows 80+ MBPS download and 8+ MBPS upload, and 20 ms ping time
BUT: when running trace route to the server I get something bizarre, in order my pings are:
[21:52:47] [Server thread/INFO]: Done (1.268s)! For help, type "help" or "?"

[21:54:27] [Server thread/INFO]: -friend/host- lost connection: Disconnected
[21:54:27] [Server thread/INFO]: -friend/host- left the game
NOTE: the example above has me failing to get past "loading terrain" on my screen, while my friend can see me, but can't interact. He then left the game normally once the test was over.
Seems like he doesn't have a static IP. resetting it might have matched the IP from the PC to the modem, allowing you to join. He should've done ipconfig in CMD when you started having issues, so he could check if the IP was right.

BUT: when running trace route to the server I get something bizarre, in order my pings are:
368 ms
20 ms
25 ms
23 ms
ANd the inverse (from my friend's end)
~20 ms
~20 ms
~20 ms
~20 ms
... WHAT!?
Hi,
I really have no experience on this stuff. All I can suggest is try to completely delete the server (Backup the world!) and rehost it.
-Clockpie
Done that, didn't work, twice in fact.
I just attempted to connect to mc.hypixel.net, and that worked fine apparently. I am incredibly confused.
This really is confusing. Does your friend have the logs?
-Clockpie
Edit:
I may have found something, try this im CMD, in administrator mode
netsh Winsock reset
Then open a new CMD in administrator mode and type
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Let me know if this works
I am on a wired connection, even disabled the wi-fi on my computer.
Did multiple connection speed checks: get between 9 and 20 ms ping times and perfectly good up and download rates.
Myself and said friend even have the same ISP, but that's worth a try I suppose.
Tried this solution, and did not produce any change, still have the same problem.
An example of the server log is as follows:

Another example log, this time covering the other two potential results: appearing in space, and timing out respectively:

And... now it's working?
Reset the modem on his end and it started working again: which makes little sense as someone else was able to join the server but not me...
The mysteries of minecraft.
Seems like he doesn't have a static IP. resetting it might have matched the IP from the PC to the modem, allowing you to join. He should've done ipconfig in CMD when you started having issues, so he could check if the IP was right.
-Clockpie
The IP I was using WAS correct, he checked three times. It makes no sense.
And now the issue is back, and unplugging the router and resetting it didn't work this time... is it learning?
And now the problem extends to not just Minecraft, but Starbound, and Terraria too.
All I can say is ISP problems, PC problems or modem/router problems.
