This is an issue with the new launcher (PC edition) running on a Windows 10 machine. I've had this issue for as long as the new launcher has been out.
Problem:
Whenever the launcher is updated and downloads (38 MB) I usually get a Mojang native launcher updater error code 5 popup as it can't move/rename the temporary launcher exe to override the existing one.I keep my Minecraft game files in the default location (C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft).
If I just click on 'OK' the popup goes away and the launcher closes. It just goes around in a loop if you try the same thing again. It downloads the 38 MB file and the error pops up again.
My current workaround:
To get it to work I have to delete the tmp directory and rename the existing launcher exe to something else. If that fails, as it sometimes does, I grab the tmpLauncher.tmp file from the tmp directory while the error message popup is in place and rename it to MinecraftLauncher.exe. Then close the error message popup and replace the old MinecraftLauncher.exe file with the newly renamed file.
Unfortunately your current workaround is the only way I know how to get around this. Issues like these are why I always keep the installer on my computer in case I need to repair my installation.

Trend Micro HijackThis is a utility that is used to collect diagnostic reports of your computer to help narrow down an issue you may be having. Download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/files/2.0.520beta/HijackThis.exe/download Run the program, choose "I accept", then "Do a scan and save a log file". After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, put the log on http://paste.ubuntu.com and give us the link.

Hopefully Mojang fixes this.

Maybe... although doubtful. Will play around with it when the next Launcher update is released and report back.
