I recently got a friend of mine who once owned Minecraft interested in it again, and tried to get him up to speed so that we might be able to play an admittedly modded game of it. However, something weird is happening with his game.
When he launches the game, through the executable, it skips the launcher and goes to the main menu of Minecraft. The launcher screen never comes up.
I'm unsure what to make of this. Any ideas?
He's using Windows 10, and it is indeed a legit copy of Minecraft. He got a game card from a local store.
EDIT: He has updated to 1.11.2 as well, so it's not that he has an ancient version.

He did. Same thing happened. He uninstalled and reinstalled.
I also tried giving him the alternate downloads. Same thing again.
He is running the shortcut that the launcher creates?

He's running the icon that was put on the desktop, if that's what you mean.
EDIT: He got it. Java was woefully out of date. Seems to be good now.
