Well, not really 'holes'. But big areas where I can see through the ground and see caves, lava and stuff underneath what is actually supposed to be there, as if the ground and trees are invisible. This started happening pretty bad after 145, and it also happens with the latest beta (although the latest beta runs REALLY fast, very little lag).
It's hard to describe, but it's as if some chunks are missing in my Minecraft world. When I run up to where the chunks are missing, they suddenly appear after I stand on an invisible part of the chunk. Where a chunk is missing, I can see caves, lava, mines and stuff below chunks that have drawn further in the distance, and sometimes I can see cows, pigs and chickens walking in mid-air until I get closer and the chunk suddenly becomes visible and I can see the ground where the animals are walking.
Strange stuff! Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it? It doesn't really crash the game, but it is pretty ugly and sort of throws me out of my immersion in the game when it happens.
Yes, I am on 'far' render distance. Actually, I researched this problem on the bug-reporting forum and found that this problem started occuring for singleplayer games after the server code was integrated into the client code... Where I started to notice this problem not too long ago, apparently this problem had been going on in multiplayer games for a long time. Since I don't play multiplayer games, I've never noticed this problem until recent.
When reading the bug reports, I saw a quick fix:
F3+A (reload chunks) fixes it without having to cycle through render distances
I have not tried it yet (been working on a town, have not been exploring much) so I imagine it would work when entering an area where there are a lot of chunks not being rendered.

Yeah, it is a bug, which was what i was getting at. This only happens on far render, but it can be fixed by using the key command, or being avoided by sticking to normal render. It isn't a bad bug though, just a visual one.
That's strange that the server code caused the Minecraft world to render so hodge-podge... You'd think the visuals would be done client-side while the world (chunk handling) would be done server-side, but it appears the server is handling more than it should... In other words, the server code should only handle chunk updates (and player/mob/projectile locations and actions); for example, if Player_A sets a block at coords 355, 24, 122, then the server should update that chunk and save it to the level file, and then send the updates to all clients located within that chunk. For the client, when a chunk comes into view the chunks should be loaded locally while updates are fetched from the server (the new block at coords 355, 24, 122). I'm just tossing out ideas, though. I hope they get this sorted in the new update along with the updated Java code, because I'm really looking forward to the new Redstone updates!
I have a similar problem, except that the bug is not a visual one. If I jump into the missing chunk I float around for a bit, then die. Reloading the game and changing render settings doesn't fix it.
This is not an Bug in MC him self its look more like u got an defectife / lost chunk and MC regenerate it with his new mapgenerator.
(Most time its look like this if u have an old world generatet in an older MC version)
If u map generatet in an old MC version u have to fix it with bare hands. Or u have to look around MCEdit and grap some old server file for fixing u map.
What a lot of people call these are "chunk errors". Mostly, these are only visual errors (I see them all the time with my worlds, when I can actually run Minecraft) and will be revealed to the normal chunk when you get near to it. Sometimes, those chunk errors do not, um... I guess, update, they either lead to the Void or to your character bugging out. I've actually never encountered a loss from regenerating the chunk, so I can't say anything definitive on that issue.
Some common reasons for block errors:
a) Crappy computer/processor/something like that, getting a better computer does help, as does increasing memory for Minecraft.
b ) Single player adventure/CTM/custom maps where the floor is "thin". Some of these map walkthroughs that I watch on Youtube seem to have this problem a lot, with some Youtubers actually noticing this issue with increasing regularity when playing these types of maps.
c) I know you guys are talking about single player maps, but another reason, but for multiplayer servers could be hackers. THOSE DAMN HACKERS...
d) I can't be absolutely certain that this happens, but some people say that the further you get from the origin of your world (0,0) the more this happens. Obviously, going further takes more time, and this equals to a bigger save file, but the Minecraft rounding for the coordinates also plays a role. Some notable Youtubers that have noticed this effect are: Antvenom, kurtjmac.
e) Large save files,
f) Possibly some strange problem that I don't know about.
g) Dat laggy game we call Minecraft... XD
So, I don't know if I've helped or not, but um... I hope it does.
