Hey MC forum! I'm getting beyond frustrated as I feel I've met my match trying to setup a simple MC server for my two sons and I to play on at home. Managing VM's and hosts during the day, I "assumed" it couldn't be difficult to install MC on a couple laptops, pick various mods and following the forge install instructions, get a neat little setup rolling. Well, I've been humbled.
The laptops can connect to the server. That isn't the issue. I can't get the mods (all the same version) to show up once we start the new world. It works in single player (local) mode but not when we create a new world.
Minecraft 1.12.2
Compact Storage
Custom Mob Spawner
HarvestCraft
Journey Map
Lootable Bodies
Mo Creatures
Tree Capitator
The first time, I had it configured that all the mods went into the .minecraft\mods dir on the laptops and .minecraft_server\mods dir on the server. That didn't work so every test after that has been some combination of mix-matching the the mods but each time, every laptop has stayed consistent so that the contents mirror each other and the server.
Like I said, after a couple of evenings of deleting the "world" dir and restarting, I'm ready to ask the experts for assistance on how to proceed. What I'm trying to accomplish is:
Did I mess anything up by installing the forge server contents into the directory path of .minecraft_server instead of the default .minecraft?
How do I determine which mod(s) need to be installed in the server's mod dir and which in the laptops' mod dir?
An interesting situation for sure, Forge should, in theory, just work assuming you have the forge server loaded.
A couple of questions:
1. Where is the local server hosted? On one of the laptops, a separate desktop, or on a separate server box (if you happen to have one laying around)
2. PC, Mac, Linux, etc? (for laptops, and host location)?
Thank you for replying. I realized after getting back to basics this morning (actually via the process of putting a short-cut on the desktop to the java launcher instead of the forge launcher), that I was starting the server up with the wrong launch process. Once I used the forge launch process, suddenly all of the mods were there!
I was tempted to get an old Hp g5 out that I used back when I was getting used to VMWare but after finding out that I was using the wrong launcher, I'm good. Server is a slightly beefy entry gaming pc that he will use as a MC pc as well and the rest of us are using laptops we are re-purposing.
Much appreciation for your help! I'm on to an issue where the game crashes when we see a certain critter with Mo Creatures. I figure it's related to that or not running java with enough memory.

Ok. Maybe I didn’t clarify the question enough.
Out of those mods listed, which need to be on the server and which need to be on the client?

Do you happen to have the crash log so I can diagnose this issue? Or does it not produce one?
